KX040 Can haul on 7 ton trailer Not need a CDL Tighter places Seems a little quicker Not much it can't do the 57 does, takes a little longer Quite a bit cheaper KX057 Little more hydraulic Little more digging power Going to need a CDL to be legal May be better for a mulcher

Don’t Let This Happen to Your Chainsaw: Engine Failure after 17 hours on a Stihl MS362cm

Stihl chainsaw I've owned for 10 years since new. Great saw but just started losing power the last few times I ran it. Started great, ran smooth just not cutting as fast as it was. Noticing compression was not good, pulled the muffler to see the piston damaged. Never would have though to check under the clutch cover on a saw with such little use.

Good tip ! Thanks
We have an 038 like that. Starts fine when cold but tears your fingers off when hot!
Can you use Alto to have it discovered on samsung tv bluetooth?
Shouldn't you tie up the hoses? Looks like they come really close to getting shredded by the blades, plus rubbing on the ground is wearing them. But thanks for showing what this does and doesn't do. Very helpful when trying to decide on a purchase. Did you buy this or would you buy this?
Enjoyed watching your older content of District 29 racing. They bring back great memories for me growing up. I miss racing the winter series with Sandhills and Montrose. Camp Coker was always fun as well. The racing scene is depressing compared to what it used to be. This was a great time to be alive and racing. I remember ol Rick Wright, Blake Hovis, and Ryan Burkett in your other videos. Blake and Rick know me as well. Thanks for posting these videos of these old tracks in my memories to take me back that are no longer there such as Sandhills & Parker Valley.
I work at a STIHL dealership. I own a 4yr old ECHO and a 25yr old Husqvarna. I refuse to buy STIHL. We make our money selling tractor parts, STIHL is a major pain in our rear end. We do not like them and make virtually no money on them.
My 250 was a buzzard to start. I set the coil gap (whatever at the time). That helped but if you miss that burp when choking it and it floods.u r screwed. I've learned since then. Coupla pulls on choke, and then into the idle position..
Kinda seems like KX80 or larger size is what everyone wants/needs. Don't see downside aside from price and hauling it. I don't think someone with a KX80 will be also having a KX40... pointless. People get the KX40 because it is easy to haul with a typical HD truck...that's the only reason. That said, I got a L47 backhoe with slightly worse specs than a KX40...I can do a lot including removing up 24 inch stumps (takes lot of time though and probably best of grinding at that point). KX40 is superior and will do everything most people want though maybe slower... only reason for a KX80 or larger is for land clearing or demo work, which is a huge area of where excavators are used and at that point you want even bigger or honestly best of renting. KX57 has sigificantly more hydraulic flow/ pumps, but the new 40-5 has sigificantly better flow so that isn't even a huge benefit anymore...the KX57 track is wider so it's more stable doing stuff over the side. It is 1-2k LB over limit to realistically haul with CDL though...my 2 cents is buy the biggest you can and if you gotta haul it and no CDL, you're stuck with KX40 size (or U48, but those are hard to come by).
Thanks for the input. I could see a KX 40, for doing work around houses, even bush hogging. Then kx80 or larger loading dirt, digging septic, situations along those lines. If I had a farm and trying to get a do it all and cost wasn’t a factor between the 40 and 57, may get the 57. But around my 6 acres for everything I need, the 40 meets the needs
What's the price on the 40?
were the first two mini pulls while the saw was on the off position?
Yes, just enough pressure to move the piston through the stroke. The ignition position I typically have as on. As has been stated in the comments, all this is for is to prime the system.
@@FrostyFilms704 thanks man, will try later today. I have 4 Stihl saws and this one didn't start when i needed to do quick limb work. Set it down for the 311 because I didn't have time to unflood it...
@@FrostyFilms704 worked like a charm, thank you! 2 click pulls on off, 4 pulls on the run position and it turned right over
@@saltyyankee5149 I've had several, 170, 362, 462 and those choke, couple of pulls till it tries to start, unchoke and start with no issues. This 250, I was about to throw the saw away.
They are hard to start. They should come with an electric drill attachment lol
Do you have a surfing sight also? Seriously.
I have been having this problem for a few days. This saw is almost impossible to start. I will try your method.
The ms250/025 both flood very easy. Decent saws but I would take a 029/ms290 10 out of 10 times over the 250. I got rid of all of my 250s.
mine starts super easy 🤷♂
I'm sure there are plenty of people on here that would be happy to trade with you. :) Can you list the year of yours, mine is an older saw, maybe the issue has been addressed with the newer ones.
@@FrostyFilms704 im not sure on the year. I picked it up used. Even the seller couldn't get it running before the sale. I brought it home and it starts right up. I'm not really sure why
What those two slow pulls do is send vacuum/pressure signal to the impulse line and draw fuel up to the carb. The MS 250-C 'easy start recoil' version has a purge bulb that does the same thing. With cheap aftermarket replacement carbs you have to check that their choke and throttle butterfly plates have similar sized holes / notches as the original carb otherwise it won't start / idle properly. Easy mod to make.
Thank you, that's my assumption as well, kind of like a prime bulb on some power equipment like my stihl backpack blower. Thanks for the reply. If you have a video on on the mods for replacement carbs, please link it. Sure it people will find it helpful.
Great work mate and thanks 😊
I’ve been killing myself for years with this. Pulled for 1/2 an hour today. Watched this video and it took < 5 minutes to get it going.
I think the only way to legally transport a KX057 without a CDL is with a truck like an International/Isuzu flatbed/ramp with 26K GVWR (and no trailer). The only challenge then is loading such a machine and buying a truck specifically to transport an excavator. There is a shortage of machines in the 4-ton class with an engine and hydraulics from larger machines - to handle demanding attachments.
No it's not. One of those will fit on a 20-26' 16k trailer and a Super Duty isn't going to weigh 10k lbs. So you have 12-13k for machine, 4k trailer, 7-8k truck. That's under 26k even at the high end of the range with full fuel, passenger, etc.
@@brianlb78That only works if your trucks GVWR is 10,000 or less with a 16k GVWR trailer. You also need to keep in mind the pay load of the trailer. You might be good on your GCWR but you may be over weight on your trailer. A 20ft 16k GVWR equipment trailer is gonna weigh at least 3,600. So you only have 12,400 pay load. KX057 is 12,400. Once you have buckets and fuel you’re gonna be over. It’s close enough to get away with if you’re not in DOT heavy area. But if your concern is staying legal you’re going to be very hard pressed to find the right, truck & trailer combo to a haul a 50 size excavator to stay in legal limits.
@nickcalabrese7433 you will be legally with any 1 ton truck. I just gave you the breakdown of the numbers
@@brianlb78 But you’re wrong. Class A CDL requirement of 26,001 pounds or more is based off of the gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of your truck + trailer set up. It has nothing to do with the actual weight of anything. The actual weight of your truck or trailer matters for calculating your payload of said truck or trailer. If you’re over weight on your GVWR of said truck or trailer, that’s also not legal, but not a CDL type of illegal. If you’re going to pull a 16k GVWR trailer, your truck can only have a 10k GVWR to be under CDL Limits. Similarly, the only way you’re legally towing a 12,400 pound machine on a 16k trailer is if your trailers empty weight is 3,000 or less because you need a 500-600 pound buffer for one bucket, chains & binders. Which It is super unlikely for a 16k rating trailer to weigh 3,000 pounds empty. Most 16k trailers weight 3,700-4k. Meaning you have a 12,300-12k pay load. Also, your listed operating weight of your machine does NOT include bucket(s,) thumb, or chains and binders. So back to the original question, a KX057 is damn near impossible to be legally hauled on a non CDL truck & trailer combo. You need a trailer with a 13k pay load minimum, meaning that trailer is likely rated for 17k or 18k GVWR. Which means your truck needs to have a 9k or 8k GVWR. Which not a single 1 ton truck will have that GVWR. Single wheel 1 tons are typically rated at 10,200-12,400 gas or diesel. All that being said there’s a reason the 40 size mini ex is most popular. It’s the size excavator you can haul with a pick up truck legally and comfortably. Your typical legal 1 ton set up, would be 11,500 GVWR Truck, 14k GVWR trailer, 10,700 trailer pay load, 9,800-10k mini ex (40 size), 1 bucket, chains and binders (500).
@@nickcalabrese7433 No you're wrong, i just gave the numbers on how it would work under 26k lbs. If you can't figure that out it's on you not me. I lilterally gave the all in numbers and estimated high. You're on your own n ow.
I have the same kx40 and new VCM cutter. When the cutter is spooled up all the way with no load on it basically not cutting or using any other function it vibrates the cab substantially, does that happen to you? I’m wondering if the cutter could be out of balance??
now you got to spray foam under dont you?
No, we did this as to not mess with foam. Technically maybe inside but decided to just wait and see what happens, I tried to make the cement wet so it went back up under the footing on the inside. I've got a stake on the corner of the building so I know if it settles anymore and hasn't moved any since doing this.
About time i see someone actually enjoying there music 👏🏼
The MS250 is a beast to start too because of such high compression. When I first purchased mine I was younger and in better shape. Now, at 76 I have to drop start it. Good tip on the two short pulls. I will definitely give that a try. My 250 has never liked being choked much. No more than two pulls with full choke or it will flood.
I hate mine. It's hard to start, won't keep running, and dont oil enough. Never buy another Stihl.
Do you have the 4k or 8k hdmi card in your 1140?
I don't recall, I returned it and just got an Onkyo and have used it and satisfied my needs and saved a ton of money.
@@FrostyFilms704 Yeah Xbox has alot Hdmi handshake issues with Processors/Avrs, especially the High end ones like Trinnov/ Mcintosh/Anthem/Storm Audio. You either connect the Xbox to the Tv directly & use Earc or you are better of with those cheap & mass produced avrs. Xbox needs to step up & start testing high end Processors/AVRS with their consoles. As everyone doesn't have running in the mill or mass produced Processors/Receivers. Well hope they do one day, i m using Earc with my Anthem 1140 and all is well.
Hello... You really don't need any of that mumbojambo. 250 is very good saw in it's class. If it doesn't start right away it has fault in it. Usually leaking crankseal. Just fix that..
You ever get it fixed ?
Dude, THANK YOU!! I almost sold it, you saved it! ❤️🙌
Is the same with my MS230! Great chainsaw but it starts easy when I do this.
Have a Stihl 271 Farm Boss. Starts EASY. Get a electrical zup tie. Put it on the handle and adjust it tight enough to slide it on the trigger to peg it. Put it on full choke and pull 2 or 3 times. Take it off choke to "run" and pull 2 or 3 times to start. My saw can sit for months with old gas and it fires right up using this method Told to me by the Stihl dealer. It works for me. I'm 70 years old.😅
Thanks, only thing I can tell you is go purchase one of these MS250 saws and hopefully you'll get one like most of us had. I'm getting up there in years as well, currently have 4 stihls, they all start easy, except the 250. Actually it does now if you prime it as described and doesn't require anything else. What you describe will most likely flood one and then you're done for a while. Thanks for the comments.
How much did it cost shipped? Thanks.
I think they are around $4500 shipped. But if you find a dealer, may be less if as they may can get a shipment of more than one to offset the cost.
You can buy the kevlar wraps man. You have one hose with rubber sliced on it. I'd get em. Just be safe.
Yep have them, wish they came with them.
Stihl dealers really do suck. They must get one hell of a deal to carry that crap because Stihl told me themselves, "Your warranty is only as good as your dealer." Stihl doesn't cover anything except their own ass.
People are bad for leaving them with fuel in them for months. It degrades quickly. It alot with ethanol are hard on carburetors causing gumming issues and damaging this membrane material in the carburetor. Almost no one tunes them up when they're supposed too. Only about 25% of people bother reading their manual when you buy something too. They blame the product, the dealer, their neighbor etc. All my stihl equipment, aside from one bigger chainsaw is almost 20 years old. I've had to buy a few things to keep them goin over the years, but that's to be expected when you use your stuff.
I'm not saying it will solve your problem, but the start sequence you describe is incorrect. Full choke. 3-5 pull till you get a "burp." Once it burps, move switch to partial choke. Pull and it should start 1-3 pulls. Let it idle for 10-20 and then "blip" (throttle it to move the switch to the run position).
And I can say that what you describe absolutely will not work and the reason for video on this saw. The correct start sequence for anything is whatever gets it to start reliably. I only have to do with the 250, the rest pretty much choke, pull 1 or two times till it attempts to start, partial choke like you state and works. I actually have a wood splitter with a honda engine, the only thing honda I've ever had that doesn't start on the second or 3rd pull. I've changed carbs at one point I was about to through the damn thing away and misted starter fluid, but now this and these procedures it starts.
@FrostyFilms704 Aye. Just saying, if it doesn't start according to procedure, there is some other underlying issue. But in a pinch, whatever gets you going. As a Stihl tech, 90% of problem saws used not starting them correctly and refuse to accept procedure or underlying cause. 9% fuel (related) issues. Not saying you, but a shocking number of customers do not want to accept that technology is changing. And because it's not obvious, they conclude there is no reason to do things differently, even if ever so slightly.
So what is the correct way?
@@yeager6882ms-250 complete POS
And always start it on the ground. Had a mate knick his leg. (15 stitches) he had done it a million times before and his left hand slipped.
Do the buckets really have to be that shallow. Not much volume
Please confirm, when you did the first cold pulls, was switch in choke notch or next one up? I saw you put it down to choke notch after the cold pulls but don't know if the cold pulls might have made it pop up to the next notch if it was in the choke notch starting off.
I wanted to ask the same question. I see you didn't get an answer 😒
I put it on half choke for the half pulls and it worked great. My 250 has been a pain to start from day one.
@@frankdelarosa620 Me too. Neither Frosty’s Films nor Chickanic [whose video he mentions getting the idea from] bothered to mention this "slightly important" detail.
I dont own one yet but I am bent between the 40 and 57. I have a L4060 tractor but I have too much dirt to move and my tractor cant suffice for the dirt work I need done on my 30 acres. As you said the u48. I never considered that model. I am going to pay attention to that model and see how it fares vs the 40 and 57. What I really want is a KX040-5 that hasnt been put on market yet. I dont know why Kubota is waiting. Im just a land owner but I may use the trackhoe for side job income. Make enough to pay its own payment that month or quarter whatever. I guess I am probably going to need a CDL or at least a GA Farm Exemption to haul one around. It is super mega confusing on what is deemed CDL'ish and not CDL'ish.
Short version in a tow situation, if youre GVWR of your toe vehicle and trailer are greater than 26,000 lbs, you'll need a CDL. So take a F450, it's 14,000 and a trailer to hall this legally would probably be a 8 tons or more. That's 30,000lbs and you need a CDL. If you have an F350 with a gvwr or 12,000 and you have a 7 ton trailer, technically you wouldn't need a CDL, however, a 7 ton trailer isn't going to legally haul a 57. Trail will weigh 3 or 4k depending on the configuration. There is a lot of confusion
What do y’all in the USA have to do in order to get a CDL? In Nova Scotia Canada we can haul a truck including payload up to 28,000 pounds and a trailer up to 10,000 pounds (unless you do a road test with a utility trailer very simple test really if completed you can haul a trailer up to 28,000 pounds). long as it’s a single axle (even heavy dump trucks as I own an international 4790 35,000 GVWR) but weighs 12,500 empty weight.
I'm in the same boat. I have an l4060 tractor and 30 acres i bought last year. I wish I would've bought a tracked skid steer instead of the tractor, but it is what it is. I have a bobcat e42 mini excavator and it's been good, but it has seen better days. I think I'm going to get my cdl to avoid the confusion and so I'm not limited.
Thank you!
nice tip i have had the same issue while sitting for months, couldnt get started. took to dealer they called said nothing wrong. this saw doesnt have the typical primer bulb so pulling over before choking must use impulse pressure to prime carb to start. thanks for the info.
When the 40-5 comes out they will sell like hot cakes,
I bought a 3.5mm to XLR Male Cable, i plugged into the both ports and the sound is terribly terribly weak.. I picked up this speaker used and not sure if I want to grab an alto prior to confirming its good, does the weak sound make sense or do I possibly have a defective EON615 ?
I just bought a u48-5 for personal use that 80 would be nice but a little to big to haul like you said.
48 in usless , shortest arm of any manufacturer. 35 size machines have more reach. Not sure what kubota was thinking, large undercarriage and very short arm
@@rontopping2048 I’m not sure what specs you have been looking at. The yammer 50 has the same reach and the Deere 50 has about 6in more. The 48 has more lift capacity and more hydraulic flow than the 040
Good video on explaining the basics of our VMC 42L
I’d like to see what that thing would do to those pallets.
From experience this cutter will shred those pallets to chips. Just not sure I would want nails laying around after shredding.
Did you rotate the valve under the right hood from two way to one way flow sending the fluid back to the tank? The biggest issue I have running a cutter is how much fluid is diverted from the aux port when you have to move or certain movements with the dipper and stick. It really slows things down. I have a RUT mfg cutter and they used some type of braking in the pump that really looses the momentum of the blades as fluid is diverted. Maybe as a safety item to stop the blades quickly, but it's a bit annoying and it's loud when it does the braking
Thanks for adding the info for people watching. What Steve is referring to is there is a 1 or 2 way circuit selection valve. An image of it can be found on page 54 of the KX040 manual. Turning the value for 1 way circuit can relieve back pressure. However, if you turn this, make sure to turn it back when you go back to using your thumb or any aux which is 2 way. I'll add these to the comments above. The video is just about the issue if the pump is mounted wrong or lines are hooked up wrong when you first get it because generates some questions. Otherwise it's really about the difference of the 42 L vs the 42 on a 40.
I got recommended one of your old videos racing with Billy Liles. The description said you were looking for him (but comments are disabled on that video). Did you ever get a hold of him? He works at the tire shop down the hill, and my mother is friends with him.

Lord … Swash buckle🤦 and those connectors he points to are the drive forward and reverse coils.. swash plate sensors are on the bottom of the hydrostatic pump
Swash buckle was incorrect, clearly explained above. Connectors are correct for getting the machine to run to load it. Or worked for mine. If this doesn't work for you, please do your own video, link it and be helpful instead of putting others down? Please share a link so we can come "critique" it for you. The point of this video was to save somebody from having to pay the tow vultures or a dealership from coming to get your machine. This wasn't to fix any issue, it was to get a machine loaded. First time it happened I got stuck in the machine and had to crawl out the back. Then went to the dealer which had "experts" like you seem to be and same thing happened again in the woods because they didn't fix the problem and actually damaged the warning harness sticking probes in it. We had to get it out and loaded and to another dealer.
