Watching this video, I feel there isn't enough musical improvement vs. the performance I saw live at Perkins, where I thought NRHS indeed should have been first over Medina (by about as much as they lost to Medina here--and Medina was a little loose musically at Perkins) and both of them a few points ahead of Kings. But if it's worth anything, Kings finished ahead of Beavercreek down at Centerville's show on Saturday (where the overall winner was Mason, of course).

@@Encyclopedist My wife and I sat behind two men in Shaker Hts. Marching Band jackets. Assume they are directors, etc. there. At the end of the NoRo performance, one turned to the other and said "Outstanding....outstanding music, outstanding marching...what a show!" They continued on with effusive praise.

@@raising4daughters Good to know; thanks! I saw North Royalton at State Finals on Saturday and thought they gave their best performance since Mr. Vitale became director. They were definitely stronger than Medina. In fact, overall, I thought North Royalton was as good as Dublin Jerome, which is the first time I'd ever say that -- but Jerome's closer, "With a Little Help From My Friends", was more musically achieved than anything in Royalton's performance. (By the way, if you want to see what is probably the very best high school marching band in the country right now, search TH-cam for recent videos of the Ronald Reagan band from Texas.)

@@Encyclopedist I can only go back to 2010 or 2011, but I think the integration of the Auxiliary into the band's overall show and choreography has gotten better every year, too. We sat with friends on the Brecksville side at the football game, and they were totally blown away by the complexity and intricacy of the Left Brain / Right Brain show and the difficulty of the flag routines....and they didn't even get to see the closing song.

Strictly speaking, this show finished at least fifth overall, or maybe sixth. Norton (in Class A) was second overall, and having seen Louisville a week earlier, I wouldn't be surprised if they also placed ahead of North Royalton in total points. As a Royalton alum who attends a lot of marching band and drum corps shows, I can totally see why this performance finished behind Medina and Amherst (I haven't seen Brunswick's show yet), and I'd bet Mr. Vitale knows why too. After the opener (where the synthesizer does most of the work), the band's sound in "Kaleidoscope" is not good. So harsh on the ears! That said, this is certainly a much harder show than Amhert's and Medina's, visually and musically (and it's notably longer, as well), but content only gets you halfway there: you have to achieve, too. With easier material, those other two bands have been able to work on finer points and they sound much more musical. Later in the season, Royalton might beat either of them; we'll see. I have to say, it does seem like Mr. Vitale saw Grove City do their traditional 4x8 running step last year at the Lexington contest and decided to stick that element in at the end here -- but not only are these running lines not straight yet, the individual leg technique is far from pretty. G.C. does a straight leg technique for that move, which gives it that amazing scissor quality. N.R. is using a bent leg technique, which is much less graceful to watch.

OK, having now seen Louisville's performance at Revere, I doubt they scored ahead of NRHS.

@@Encyclopedist Thank you for your insight. You make a ton of sense. We thought NR's was the most entertaining and, perhaps, that was due to the degree of difficulty and non-stop action. But, if it's more about execution of the routine, that makes it harder to score well. Thank you.

OK, at the Perkins competition they were indeed underscored by the judges -- or rather, Kings, in my opinion, was overscored and shouldn't have been in the mix with Royalton and Medina. (In either of the previous two years, Kings would have deserved the win. But not today.) Nice job winning best music, though!

I was stunned by the rankings too! Out of the performances I watched online from this contest, I thought North Royalton was the clearly the best. (I've never lived in North Royalton - I live in a neighboring city - and became interested after attending the NR Band Festival with a friend.) I thought North Royalton's performance was visually and musically amazing! Truly. In contrast, I couldn't even make it through the video of one of the competing schools that the judges seemed to really like. To me their program just didn't work at all for a marching band, and seemed more like musical theater... so I was really shocked to see how well the judges scored them.

As am I. But based on the past two years' shows, both Medina and Royalton better watch out for Kings.
