Legends - The Entirety of Castlevania
First non-canon game, save for ReBirth. Would be set between Lament and Dracula's Curse. Saved it for here because it's the spiritual finale of the Game Boy trilogy. Also behold the new microphone.
Simon's next now. I have ideas for non-Castlevania videos which I might put out first, but I'll definitely be getting to him after that.

As a side note, I really recommend @junkisakuraba's work, Legends Rearranged. Very few remixes out there for the tracks in this game, and they totally deserve more.

In which I talk about all the Christopher games. Sorry for the mic jumpscare in the middle there. Was testing a new one, but I wasn't up to rerecording this whole video. You'll properly see it in action for the next one. Speaking of which that won't be Simon just yet. Expect a shorter thing in-between. And for honesty's sake, I did quite a bit of save-stating in The Adventure's later levels. I ...

I found that apparently the manga didn't end, it was cancelled. It likely intended to adapt the game's story, as well, which would've been fun to see. I don't think the manga was particularly good, honestly, but I would've liked that anyways. Same deal as Lament here. The gameplay I recorded's mostly in Japanese, so you'll be listening to some JP Hector grunting. I don't think this game's dub i...

Peak classicvania right here. Something I forgot to add is Sypha and Grant actually take more damage than Trevor and Alucard. One extra for every hit. Balances out their absurd abilities, sort of. Also, check out the Video Game Museum or the Cutting Room Floor if you're looking for deeply buried info on CV3, they've got some crazy stuff. It's always the ugly sites, I guess. First video in a series. Hoping to cover all the Castlevania titles, even the awful ones, with a needlessly deep analysis of what little story the franchise has. Forgot to mention Joachim is immune to conditions like Paralyze, Poison and Curse. Vampire shtick. holly cheeesee, same year release than Symphony of the night !!?? I agree with you about the comment that Sonia Belmont have a lot of potential for new content in the Castlevania Universe. Another video recommendation for you to make, is the actual timeline before and after Igarashi defined the Canon Vs Non Canon any more. I really respect the fact you finished a bad game but not only finished, also collected the other items so we could se baby Trevor (or Christoper)!! Did you count how many times used the burning skill? we will not judge for real XD we saw there were some times game was so trashy like the dead end rooms XD we can agree that using the skill was not cheating Thanks for another great video, keep the castlevania ball rolling Clinical Depression, we will be here waiting for the next one!!
The timeline idea could be cool, yeah. I don't remember how many times I used burning, but I specifically avoided using it. It destroys literally every boss. I often beat a boss with it, then went back to beat it without it.
COD ranks high for me. It's plot is insane, it's fun, but reading the manga can give you a different perspective among the craziness. Peak Yamane music, peak Kojima designs, and mechanically it's solid. The crafting and ID systems hooked me as much as the soul system did. Level design is bland but wouldn't hurt as bad if Hector moved as gracefully as Leon (whose speed feels faster?). It's a game I go back to a couple times a year, trying to unlock more. Definitely has a lot to keep one occupied.
I get that, but the level design is a big turnoff for me. I wish it'd gone deeper in its inspirations and had level design like the first Devil May Cry, I'd probably enjoy that. One easy way to "fix" the momement (ergo, make the bland level design more skippable) would be giving Hector some alternate movement option, like the dashes the Igavanias have. Maybe there's some mod with out there, but I'm not too knowledgeable on the subject.
Do wish the environments weren't as "dungeon crawly" given you're outside the castle so often. A rare sight to behold, and I wish we got more storytelling through the environments. Ecclesia and even Simon's Quest did that better.
I actually have an issue of an old gaming magazine (yeah, remember those? :P) called Electronic Gaming Monthly that contained a quick interview with Igarashi, and his answer to the question "which do you think is the worst Castlevania game?" was, and I quote, "Castlevania Legends. I hate Sonia Belmont- she has the worst whipping animation ever." And I mean, looking at the footage in this video, ya can't exactly say he's wrong, can you?
@@damonullerick6572 Ha, that sounds in-character. Sucks that the game Igarashi hates is precisely the one with the sole female Belmont. I also feel it's not a coincidence he retconned it, given it messed with the lore of his boy Alucard. Given, the whip here really is strange. Idk why it's so short.
Dracula, seeing his son's vampire hunting crush, 0 years atter his wife died: She kinda bad tho 😏
Another excellent video Clinical Depression, I really enjoy all the information you provide. Is there any information about Walter Bernard? you did not go more in depth with that character, I would like to know where he comes from , who he is, why he is a vampire, is he the first Vampire ? Great content, now I am a big fan of the channel!!
No further information on Bernhard unfortunately. He's not the first vampire I don't think, since no one ever says so, just a really powerful one who happened to have the Ebony Stone. Wish the games had more detail on that. I neglected to mention that his design is possibly based on the real life king Matthias Corvinus, who was also the inspiration for Mathias Cronqvist (aka Dracula).
@@ClinicalDepressed thanks for the info, I will look for more information on web about Corvinus while I wait for the next video :)
If you ever make another history video like this one, you can do it for the Pre-Columbian cultures in the Mexico area. That was a very impressive video!!
Yeah I'm thinking about it. This video was a monumental amount of effort to make, and it really burned me out. But maybe someday.
Excellent video, I love all the in depth information about the characters, the introduction, the locations and the extra lore you add every time. I have never played this game but just for what I saw, it will be too difficult for my gaming skills 😅. I didn’t know you could choose different characters to play with , that’s a pretty nice addition. The Netflix series is pretty nice, did not know it was based on this game neither!! Again, awesome vídeo Clinical Depression!! Thanks for all your effort!!
Hello, I am definitely subscribing to your channel!!, My last comment in another of your videos, mentioned that I was about to keep watching some more videos and if you keep the same good level of content, I would subscribe. Awesome video, great Prologue, masterful narration with good comic content, dude, just keep doing what you are doing !!! I played this videogame when I was around 18 yo and now that I am older never could find the exact name so I could re-play it, great memories. As you mentioned, there was not a lot of guidance in how to craft the weapons, I wish you had included more weapons crafting information, but that is just me. Excellent video Clinical Depression!! keep the good content coming!!
That's great to hear. It's really cool that I was able to tap into your memories like that. That's one of the goals of this series (along with walking people through games they haven't played or won't play). I didn't dwell too long on the weapons because I figured it might hurt the pacing of the video, plus I'd have to do a lot of extra research. Looking back, maybe I should've included a little more. But if you ever get around to replaying the game someday, I left a link in the description for the website I used (with all the crafting recipes and evolution paths and such).
Great video!!! I have never seen those Castlevania games and your description and video were excellent, as you mentioned, just your mic had some issues but no worries. I will keep looking your other videos and if they are as good as this one, i will subscribe to your channel.
@@jaimecavazos9090 Thank you very much! I'll have an actually good mic for next video, which should be soonish since it'll be shorter.
I should rewatch the video, got lost midway because the sexy voice got sexier
I'm kinda surprised you actually subjected yourself to the torture of OG The Adventure... that game is not good. Belmont's Revenge is great though, and to anyone reading this in the future: go listen to its OST _right this second._ Absolutely spectacular soundtrack, one of the best the Game Boy could offer, hands-down. Adventure Rebirth, meanwhile... It's absolutely fuckkng criminal that game is basically a thread away from becoming lost media. Only thing weird about it is that they didn't use Battle of the Holy as the song for its first stage; instead it's Reincarnated Soul. What makes this weirder is the fact that Battle of the Holy is IN THE GAME'S FILES. Hell, there's an extended version of it right here on TH-cam! Sometimes the decisions of game devs make no sense...
Yeah but I'd already played The Adventure before. It's... not good, but thankfully it's short. I know some people like it, but I don't see it. You can be challenging without being unfun. The ReBirth thing is also partially the fault of Nintendo, they're super weird with their virtual shops. No clue what they're doing leaving this game unattended.
We have some hope: since Haunted Castle Revisited seemed to use Rebirth's engine it shows they've got it running properly on modern hardware+PC. They could've put Rebirth in the Dominus collection, but I imagine they're saving it as a "bonus" game for another collection.
@@TheT3rr0rMask oh god I hope
Man fuck like 90% of that tv show
This was the first M-rated game and first castlevania I ever played. In retrospect, you can call the ps2 games dmc clones, but they nail the atmosphere and music, so I'd say they're even better to me.
I think it's less of a retcon because the games had no lore or story the team was concrete on. It was bare bones enough to flesh out and allows room for the series to grow as it has and have inbetween points. Getsu Fuma Den is a part of that world, after all. If you've played any of Iga's games, there is more not put in the game than makes it in and how it's implemented is hit or miss. I suppose it was the balance between story and gameplay as I know a fair amount of people get annoyed that Castlevania has story cutscenes in the Igavanias. St. Germaine certainly did have more to him, but it was never realized, shown later. I think it would have added one too many characters in Aria of Sorrow for them from my guess. Whatever he was sent to correct we aren't told as it may be in a timeline he is from something went wrong.
Oh yeah, agreed. I didn't use the word retcon in a negative way here. But it's true, you can definitely tell there were further plans for Germain. But the series is sort of dead for now, so.
Also The problem With curse of darkness That you need to know about Hector’s wife and his Friendship of Isaac Is an extended universe Material A.k.a. the manga Which is a bad way of telling the story like We don’t really know about Hector’s wife Or what she look like Instead You had to look at the manga To know the full reason if not backstory About Hector’s life Which is a bad way of Telling a story but hey that just my Opinion
@@supergamerboy1177 Not necessarily. Castlevania has or metroidvania aren't really made for heavy store exposition. Also remember that nearly all Konami projects involving Castlevania were on a tight budget and deadline, so expecting them to be able to fit that in when they had enough trouble with what made it in is unreasonable. I don't think people realize that the manga is an alternate prequel, not the official one. The one that came with the game, the mini manga by Kojima, was official. We could have gotten nothing as most Castlevania do, but they chose to go into the backstory instead of just give motivation.
Yeah no the manga is more or less canon because It out expand on Hector’s life the love of his life and outright Show the The friendship/Rivalry Of Isaac also Castlevania/metriodvania All right shows Interesting stories that expands the world aria/dawn of sorrow and for Metroidvania super metriod and fusion, prime etc.
@@blumiu2426 It's important to point out that the CoD manga was still supervised by Igarashi. I would think he'd care at least a little about the integrity of canon, so it does strike me as strange that he would let Sasakura tamper with Rosaly's death willy-nilly, even if I prefer the stake version from a thematic, historical standpoint. Maybe he didn't pay much mind to some side manga, though. Suppose the Netflix series is the same. Anyways I think I'll talk properly about this in the eventual SoTN video. I have some more considerations to make about Lisa and Rosaly's deaths, now.
Lisa didn't die at the stake, she was crucified. You saw this plainly in Symphony of the Night when the villagers put her there. The only thing that depicted that was the cartoon in which it got it among many things wrong. Also, there is a contradicting narrative on how Hector came to leave Dracula. In the short manga by Kojima that was given out with the special Japanese edition, it shows him arguing against Dracula's method and Dracula casting him from the castle himself. Hector then wonders away having survived. I guess in the manga he just runs away. The manga also messes up a bit in Isaac's presentation in that they both wore the same uniform. Isaac's only appears that way in the game because he fell to the curse and lost his mind, Igarashi saying that the remains of his outfit displaying this. It wasn't a fashion choice for Isaac.
You're right, her death cause isn't specified. I guess the animated series brainwashed me. Though to be fair, the SoTN scene has never looked like crucifixion for me. She looks to be hanging from the cross, not properly nailed. Yeah, I'm aware of the different version on how Isaac's uniform came to be. I think I mentioned briefly in the Cordova Town section that it could be a symbol for his madness.
@@ClinicalDepressed Aside hunting down material that mentions her death, there is the illustration of Dracula with her body, so there was something to bury and body to retrieve after attacking the village/town for what they did. I think a lot of people had the Mandela Effect just seeing her suspended on a piece of wood, and since neither Ellis or showrunner gave a crap about the lore they just went with what was most dramatic. It was never a method of crucifixion that I know of, especially given chain links are used. Even rope was used for the rack, not chain. I guess it was to show visually how she was on the cross or didn't want to show it as cruel as her hands pierced. I should look into the uncensored version and see if different, I don't recall so... I just know no wood pile and it's a crucifix. The interesting thing about Isaac and Hector from IGA is their similarities and differences. They were designed to compliment one another, sharing the red and white hair Romanian vampires are said to have. They had similar childhoods, Isaac and Julia having to run away similar to Hector. I'm not sure there is another villain in the series that just doesn't appear and die, ironically as much as people seem to dislike him (or his look).
True let not forget that hector wife was originally Hanged But then later on retcon burning at the stake Let’s not forget That succubus Might not know the full story in the way Lisa die And at Best Might not know the full Detail how she died
@@supergamerboy1177 The only time she was burned was in the manga, which is considered an alternate telling of past events. The mini manga by Kojima is actually how the events played out, in which she was hanged. And are you getting two thing confused between Hector's love and Dracula's wife? Why wouldn't the succubus know if Dracula knew? They would know why he went after the humans even more than before, it wouldn't be a mystery. Plus, the game isn't trying to play mind games or the like, it would be straight forward. Other material talking about SotN says Lisa was crucified.
Yeah no first off the so called retelling is shown to be more canon Then the other way how Hector’s wife die the first time Before the retcon also The same so-called retelling Can apply to multiple Castlevania remakes also yeah The succubus outright lies and we I don’t know The full context how Lisa die in the games also Dracula might have not told the succubus the full True
Dude, what a great video! I am very excited for this series as a long time castlevania fan. Can't wait for Igavanias and more obscure titles. Will you cover Bloodstained in a far future after all konami titles?
@@NikitaAlexeevdjeiden Yo, thanks a bunch! And yes sir, Bloodstained too. Sorry that you have to start with the dogshit audio in this first video though, my mic is trash.
Rosalie time is short, but her impact is magnificent. Hector is a good man who chose evil because the world was harsh, and at the earliest sign, he chose good. I love this story so much. Way better than the anime.
I felt like there was some kind of plan for Hector in season 2, and then it clearly went out the window in season 3. But I don't know what the writer was thinking.
Sorry but no Rosalie was a nothing character like really I prefer the anime Because it actually show Hector as an actual character Rather than Being a rip off of both Dracula and alucard backstory like really dude do they already Disrespect Trevor In curse of darkness By almost killing him like I Prefer the anime but Doesn’t mean I respect the game series like I say I like both the games and The animated series
@supergamerboy1177 I guess if having nothing to do w/the overall plot while being weenie shamed in a dungeon is "character".
I think I saw my cursor on the screen, how do I fix that
Fun fact the Japanese manual for Cv3 does actually differentiate between Catholic and Eastern Orthodox! In the original version of the story Eastern orthodox calls on the Catholic to find Trevor after Sypha goes missing.
Checking back on the manual, you're sort of right, though it still strikes me as very weird. The Eastern Orthodox Church is mentioned dispatching armies (which isn't really a thing it can do by itself) and I don't believe Catholicism is ever directly mentioned (not in the translation I'm looking at, at least). The pope is said to be working with the Orthodox right from the get-go, and the manual makes it seem like he's leading it personally, which he wouldn't be (Orthodox barely has a centralized leadership structure, anyway). Well, it's still good to know that the original lore did differentiate. I don't recall the distinction ever mattering again going forward lol.
@@ClinicalDepressed Considering the time and place at-least they tried lol. As an artist myself I think that Eastern Orthodox has it own awesome aesthetic and way of handling religious artwork that I'd love to see adapted in one of the games. Usually when japan wants to represent western religion it's usually Spanish/Italian Catholicism and I'm assuming because of how bombastic it can be.
@@dashfox1 Yeah you're definitely right on all of that. Unfortunately the Netflix series did not go for that either.
@@ClinicalDepressed They got me in the first half using actual Romanian towns not going to lie.
Yeah I check the Original Japanese intro translated and no The church is just called the holy church Not the orthodox church or Catholic like In the same intro it says That The church in the intro Mentions or At least implies that The pope is Leading Their church while the Orthodox Church Does not have a pope But if you do have the translated Castlevania three Japanese manual Can you put a link? Because in the series, the church is always called the church not the orthodox or Catholic Heck in the games they use Catholic symbols not Orthodox Symbols

TH-cam didn't like my funky comment 😢
Mostly a comment for the Almighty Algorithm, but you made a good choice playing the Japanese version of this game. To anyone wanting to play CV3, DO NOT go with the US version. It's unbelievably, SAVAGELY brutal in its difficulty, to the point where save states won't really help.
Hear hear. Though I think the soundtrack is the bigger loss.
Pretty close-minded statement to make. I know some who prefer the US version, as do I. It has some extra features and graphical polish in places. As far as difficulty is concerned, there are harder games (even within the franchise). Either version you pick you get a great game.
