Every year, a different city is designated as the European Capital of Democracy through a rigorous selection process involving Experts' and Citizens' Juries - creating a hub and stage for democratic innovation.
In cooperation with civil society and citizens, the title-holding city hosts Democracy Year, featuring a series of vibrant activities and events to celebrate democracy, address challenges, and showcase best practices. Visitors from all over Europe are invited to observe and participate in these efforts.

Cities Learn: Disinformation in the City 2.0
Three experts in the field of disinformation will share their experiences, thoughts and ideas on the topic. Paul Costello will present the recently-launched Disinformation in the City Response Playbook developed by the University of Melbourne and German Marshall Fund of the United States with cities and sector experts to guide disinformation response in the unique city context.
Graham Wetherall-Grujić will discuss a notorious example of misinformation against green energy in Germany, which illustrates how complicated identifying and diffusing disinformation can be, and why fact checking alone is not enough.
Mathis Dippon will present Truth, Lies & Democracy, a key format in the European Capital of Democracy’s Democracy Year events. He will give an overview of what went down at the game jam in Barcelona this year and an insight into what’s planned for this event in Vienna 2025.ue city context.
