How To Replace a Boat Fuel Sending Unit Gasket Correctly and Test for Water in Fuel
In this video, I replace the gasket for the fuel tank sending unit which is a Wema / KUS sending unit. Its similar to many Moeller Marine 5 screw sending units.
Additionally, I test for water in the fuel tank with a test paste. Over time, the gasket material can start to crack. This gasket had some visible deterioration and needed to be replaced. This is a perfect time to also check for any water in the tank with a test paste.

254 Scotty Rod Holder Height Extender 8.5" - has the SS rod
Did you not watch the video? The 254 Scotty rod holder height extender is the one we are modifying in the video. Although the extension middle section is stainless tubing, The nylon portion is not reinforced thus the need for a steel pin for extra reinforcement
Do you think the leader end will hold up to 100lb + halibut
With those small swivels in the video? No. I would upgrade the swivel size to handle the greater weight. For halibut, I actually use TIG Stainless Rod to build the spreader bars for this reason. The only reason I make spreader bars for Lingcod out of cloth hangers is we don't worry about losing them in the rocky reefs we fish out of. I have guests on board that may lose a lot of them. It doesn't hurt so bad with hang-ups and loosing the rigging with guests onboard - plus it is more than adequate to handle the weight of even large Lingcod and the occasional smaller halibut. If targeting large halibut, I would build the spreader out of Stainless TIG rods and use larger capacity swivels.
Great video but the lip smacking makes it unwatchable
Gauge calibrated? The gauge they used may be + or - 5 % just like the one you have>> + or - total 10% for two gauges!
Didnt see any blood in the boat. You guys bleeding your fish? Also curious how those okuma coldwaters hold up on the troll. I was told the worm gears burn out pretty easily with tuna.
Yes, of course we bleed them :-). We bleed them in the bleed box and gut them and brain spike them. That way it doesn't make a mess on the deck. Then I move them over to the ice slurry tank to quick chill them. After they get ice cold in the slurry, then I move them over to the ice chest and stuff them with ice. A lot of that process is not in the video. As far as the Okuma CW...I have not had any issues with them so far; but I do take them apart and keep them lubed well. The gears to the worm drive & line counter are plastic...so if you have any binding or lack of lubrication, they will get destroyed. But remember that our fish up here are only 20-25# fish - they are not the large fish that people get down south. Some guys will remove the level wind portion and keep the reel as an open face. I do have some TLD25's for Tuna...but I've found that the Okuma's are just fine for few Tuna trips off our coast each year.
@AFaO your running a tight ship. Nice job. I'm also chasing these same cohort of fish our of newport. I've got a hewescraft searunner 190 ht et. I've wanted to take a pair of okuma cedros jigging rods out but only had okuma coldwaters pair up with them. I'll have to give them a try. Thx!
@@AFaO i burned up a gear on my okuma. Bought new gear online for 1.00. Easy fix
what transducer and do you use the s1000 module on this display (assume transom mount)
This video snippet is with Active Target, gen 1. For 2D, no module. I use the Airmar 175HW - which is one of the best transducers on the market for Salmon and Pelagics - fish that are normally in the upper water column..
I like the silicone baking mat idea for added heat resistance... my ducting runs close to some of my electrical wires bundles...And my Exhaust runs close too!! Exhaust will be heat wrapped with Titanium heat wrap.... On Amazon i found a silicone baking mat... it’s 2mm thick and heat resistant up to 500 degrees..... is this something similar to what you purchased?
The ones I used are about 1mm thick. Here is the link from Amazon. amzn.to/3Y7mB0K
Is the primer bulb necessary?
@@salmonkiller2545 not really. In fact, the check valve can create problems. In a later revision, I actually removed it
@@AFaO you don’t use that tank anymore ? Or did you get rid of the quick disconnects ?
@@salmonkiller2545 Same tank. Just removed the primer bulb recently. The distance from the tank to the pump is only 12". It is just the initial priming to the pump that takes a little more time with no primer bulb. The pump doesn't have to work as hard since it doesn't have to go through the check valves in that primer bulb. I've had multiple installs...some with the primer bulb and some without. Its only needed for the initial fueling of the tank. After that, its not needed and the heater pump value (assuming its in good condition) will prevent fuel reversing when the heater is not being used. How long of a run do you have from your tank to the pump? Its more critical than anything else to keep that pump in the upward/45 degree direction so that it will prime and work properly. Also follow the directions on max distances and use only the hard fuel line post pump.
@@AFaO it’s all in work…the hose will be 2 feet or less from tank to pump… so you still use the quick disconnects?
@@salmonkiller2545 originally yes. But over time the pickup tube on that tank failed. So I had to put an aftermarket pickup tube in which only had a barbed connection. So I use Oetiker clamps to secure it. So now no quick disconnects.
Do you use kerosene or diesel ?
@@salmonkiller2545 mostly kerosene because its cleaner. But if its not available where I am at…I will use diesel.
What is the ideal speed for trolling?
@@gabrielhage5522 ideal? Whatever speed the fish bite at. Reality is, we have general rules of thumb for Albacore. Clones, cedar plugs around 7 to 8MPH. Swimbaits 4 to 7. These are rules of thumb and as the season goes on, slower, deeper and smaller can produce better.
What's year of your Honda 8HP motor? looks similar to mine BF9.9D but the serial couldn't reveal the year made
Mine is 2015. But you need to use the serial number and look that up. There are online resources...or you could reach out to Honda Marine Customer Relations at 770-497-6400
what fluid are you using ? My user manual don't tell me other than oil fluid.
Please see the note at 3:19 in the video 😊
what size snap barrel swivel do you recommend for crappie fishing ultralight?
That is pretty light. We're usually fishing for 10# to 100# fish over here on the west coast (from Salmon to Halibut)...so normally I don't test the smaller swivels and snaps. There are some smaller #14 swivels out there. I have not tested them. But you could donate them for a test 🙂
Is there a way to determine when images that are history meet up with your trolled lure?
Unless your lure is in the cone of the sonar, its kind of hard to really ascertain that. What you really want, if you are wanting to watch something behind the boat outside of the cone of your 2D sonar, is live sonar where you are shooting sonar in a horizontal direction. Such as Active Target, Live Scope, etc.
@@AFaO Thanks for the reply. Would love to have Live Scope!
@@hayesrutherford9415 If you want to see some footage of Live sonar pointed about 100' behind the boat, you can watch some of this footage I posted earlier. This is while trolling at ~2MPH for Salmon with a large 11" flasher and a spinner for a lure. You can see the full action of the flasher and spinner in the footage, including the fish coming up to the lure and looking at it. th-cam.com/video/kU6n9DjiBhc/w-d-xo.html
Awesome, that is exactly proper vocabulary should be used for all these marketing mumbo jumbo. Thank you.
Great video! Thanks for sharing. What speed do you troll at?
Around 7MPH. Vary speed a little at first until we get bit and then maintain that speed. Usually swimbaits a little slower and clones a little faster.
Hi, just wondering if I could ask you I recently changed the impeller on my 20 hp and when I put it back together sometimes it’s hard to go into reverse and I have to wiggle the propeller it goes into reverse gear. Is it possible I have that little nut out of adjustment.
Is this with the engine running? Or with the engine stopped? If when the engine is stopped, that is normal. The gears may not be in mesh and you need to slowly move the motor while shifting into gear (either forward or reverse). Do not force it into gear.
@@AFaO wow thank you so much. It’s with the engine off.
Excellent instruction video. Thank you!

i can't see why this wouldn't work. makes good sense. did you complete the mod? i use the orca rod holder on the nylon extension on the rigger boom. i like it a lot but do worry about the overall strength at times. i'm making a leash to attach to the rod to address at this point.
Yes. And I've used it for over a year without an issue. I did move to a different rod holder because of using electric reels for offshore use and these Scotty's did not allow good clearance for the power cable on the Tanacoms. I'm am now using the Strikers series for that clearance which already has the stainless pin in the socket.

Halibut! Best tasting and textured fish in the ocean and what a blast to catch. We used to fish them out at the Bandon high spot. It used to take a fast boat a good hour and a half to get out from Bandon in a little longer from Charleston. You'd be traveling over 1,000 ft deep waters and then it would rise up to about 475 to 550. Of course the season was only a couple or three days long usually twice a year, it was worth the time and fuel getting out there if you could get your bait on the bottom. Most of the time the currents were real strong, there was strong wind... basically pretty snotty. But if you could get your bait on the bottom you would get a bite within seconds. Sometimes you had to drive downhill while letting your line out just to find the bottom. That would give you a couple of minutes of good fishing. It wasn't unusual to take home something over 100 lb. There were plenty of chicken halibut but we would usually go at home with something that was 50 or 60 lb and sometimes bigger. The last time I went out was in around 1997. The hour and a half triple and took about 45 minutes because I had a 23 ft Sea Ray with a 454, power steering and trim tabs. It would usually do 55 on the ocean. We got out there, caught big fish right off the bat and got back to the boards before 9:00 a.m. It was one for the books.
Yesterday was great day
Reports over the weekend were amazing, including lots of Yellow tail and BFT caught off our coast. Amazing season so far
What site do you like for chloro and temp shots had terrific but seems overpriced and unreliable wanna try a different one
@@schiedler1978 The challenge is, many of the services are pulling from the same satellites, so they are dependent on the same clear sky for a good shot. The last few weeks we have had too much cloud cover to get a clear shot. In the past, I have used NANOOS since it was free. Using SatFish now as it has better tools and the HiDef Sat shots give you potentially a better shot by using multiple feeds from the same day.

:Tuna trolling with spinning gear??? Really? Not in So Cal. or Mexico.
Normally, I have those spinning rods ear marked for jigging/casting with swimbait; but they were handy and casted out on this trip while trolling with swimbait. Remember, these are small Albacore here in Oregon/Washington...20 pound range. For bigger fish...yep, Conventional Lever Drag reel is the way to go. We just don't really have those up here. But on a bright note...since they are younger/smaller fish - they also have less mercury 🙂
Thanks for posting this. Do you have any tips if I can’t get this knot to stop slipping under pressure? The loop just gets smaller until it pulls through
Are you putting tension on the loop when you try to lock it in place? Put the loop on a nail, around a knob or something to put tension on it when you try to lock it into place. I have seen some small diameter mono difficult to lock into place. What you can try doing for those scenarios is to add another plait to the knot (i.e. take the loop through another time.
@@AFaO thanks, appreciate you taking the time to answer. I think the fault lies in this slippery co-polymer line I’ve got, it won’t even hold a clinch knot.
