Japan’s first zero-waste supermarket // Totoya (English Version)
Hello there! Thank you for stopping by to watch our video. We are Totoya - the first zerowaste supermarket in Japan. Our plan is to open up in July, and to be able to start right off as the ideal version of a sustainable shop we envision. For this, we started a crowdfunding campaign, as your support would help us in making sure the business itself is sustainable as we procure our products and finish up the interiors of the store.
Please take a look at our crowdfunding page (camp-fire.jp/projects/view/416826) to see what kind of returns we have curated! Sharing this video, the crowdfunding page, our just our name is also a big help ☺️🙏🏻

When I was a little girl, food items you buy from the market or an eatery were wrapped in old copy paper or newspaper and drinks were in glass bottles (I'm 44). We can live without plastic packagings ...

I just moved to tokyo from the southern United States. It has been so hard for me to find options without plastic. This makes me so happy to see!

People carry reusable coffee mugs around, so *this* is the natural next step in our evolution avoiding wasteful containers! Fantastic!

I love your comments about your grandparents! My textbooks published in 2006 by Macmillan are titled 'Looking Back, Moving Forward: An Environmental Course for the Next Generation' for exactly this reason!

I am SO SO overjoyed to see your opening! My name is Chris Summerville and I am a lecturer at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto and I live on the western shores of Lake Biwa near Omi-Maiko. I have been teaching about Environmental Education and Sustainability for over 30 years and making the connections between all environmental issues and our lives during this time. I am also the Assistant Editor for the Kyoto Visitors Guide and since April am writing a 'Sustainability' series. The first two were on organic food and the second one (in July) is on Sustainable Tourism. We would like to feature you and the Zero Waste shop just opened near Teramachi and Marutamachin for the next issue in August or September. This week, I will be sharing this video with over 150 students so be prepared for many customers and with over 500 Facebook friends many of whom live in Kyoto! When I was a student at UC Davis, In California in 1979-83, our local Coop already was a Zero waste Coop...I wish it had not taken so long to arrive but THANK YOU THANK You for your presence at this essential time when the youth face the consequences of the Climate Emergency! With hope and light, Chris Summerville
