Welcome to my channel, here I'll be posting slideshows and videos of my 1972 HQ Holden. The car will be stripped to it's bare shell and slowly be repainted and rebuilt on a tight budget. All work will be performed by myself, with safety coming first. I have owed the car since 1989. Sit back and enjoy.

Hey mate is there any way to access the factory wiring diagrams without having to buy the entire book?
You can buy the whole workshop manual on cd from ebay, $14.95. It has everything in it, wiring diagrams included. Search ebay, holden hq workshop cdrom.
@@davohq1724thanks very much mate. I’ll take a look
Hey mate ive got a HQ kingswood which came out with a gts dash. I bought a clock for it but cant figure out how to connect it. Should the wire stil be in the loom if it didnt come out with the clock?
There wont be a wire in the loom. you have to run a wire from the fuse to the clock.
@@davohq1724 Thankyou mate. Where is the cigar lighter lamp and the cigar lighter lamp switch located on a hq? Appreciate your help.
@@joemacri4881 do you mean the lighter outlet on the dash facia?
@@davohq1724I was told that a hq doesn’t have a lamp for the cigar lighter. Does that mean that the cigar lighter has one wire to the fuse panel and one earth? I’m talking about the cigar lighter outlet
@ a positive wire comes from the fuse to the cigar lighter, then loops to the glove box if you have a light in there. The frame of the cigar lighter is the earth.
Hey mate what is that hole to the left of the wiper switch for do you know?
I think that it might have been an after market switch install years ago.
Looks absolutely mint that engine bay. That's how I want mine when I have finished. Credit to you mate mint
Thanks mate. I love clean engine bays.
I run a rubber hose clamped on where the dipstick goes and sealed on the end. no chance of any oil leaks. Just pull it off to check oil level. never had an issues the last 10 years of track days. Do you have baffle plates under your rocker cover breathers. Stops a lot of oil going in the catch can.
That's a great idea. I'm going to do that with the dipstick. I have baffle plates under the rocker cover breathers.
Crankcase pressure, shorten your hoses and vent both sides to atmosphere. I’ve had the same problem, it’s gotta get out .
I had the same problem and just hooked up a Pcv valve to the intake to create some vacuum. No more leaks and idles smoother to
I was going to vent both. I just didn't want to get a defect for not having the PCV hooked up.
whats that hole for on the right of the steering column hole?
someone before me had an after market hazard light switch installed there
Historic touring cars have a little spring that holds the dipstick in. They also run a much larger catch can, externally vented. Group C 308s ran similar. The AR1 and also NS2R are abgood idea, lots of 15" sizes available But can create another problem, lots if liad going through 50 year old wheel studs, stub axles. Coupd eventually look at long heavy duty studs, and "stub stiffeners " to help the bearings..
Thanks for your input. I'm still learning about the car while doing track days. I never thought about the studs or stub axles. What are stub stiffeners? Now I'm worried that my wheels are going to break off.
that oil seepage from your oil filler on the tappet cover could be caused by the cover not having a baffle in it i found on some of the after market tappet covers this caused it to leak as you said i put the original tappet cover back on problem solved
There's a baffle in there. It only leaks when I'm constantly revving it to 5500rpm. The next rack day will test my theory.
Hey Dave (guessing that’s your name, given the channel name), looking forward to following as I’m about to start restoring mums ‘75 HJ premi.
Thanks mate. HJs are very similar to a HQ
Hey Dave, another silly question. When you remove the wire from the alternator to the battery. How does the battery receive its charge? Does it charge back through the starter motor wire?
I'm sure it goes through the batt gauge. That's why it's dangerous to have extra loads like electric fans etc with the batt gauge connected.
watching at,., and on every corner,,,,i go with my head,,., left and right,,, like im in the car,,,,,, beautiful , Holden special vehicles 🇦🇺
thanks, it was a great day. Can't wait to do some more mods and get out there again.
@davohq1724 my man 🏆🥊
Good job Davo
Thanks, not the fastest car by far, but had a great day
Bugger… I feel for you mate.
@@bigal878 I've since repaired and repainted the guard, but have left a few dents in the bonnet.
Cool video! Where do you get the round cleaning brushes from? Thanks
@@johntinamostyn4044 they came with the last gun I brought. I don't use them any more as it went solid. Just remember to clean your gun after every use.
The fuel gauge sender in all GTS must have a red sticker not white
Brilliant to welcome you and your HQ to Track Day Club! Awesome vid! 🙌🏼
Thanks, had great day. Fixed a number of minor problems ready for the next meet.
Some kind of auto shut off for the electric fuel pump, in case of an accident?
I've been thinking about that, not sure how to do it. I'll have to look into it.
Just found a inertia safety cut off switch on eBay.
@@davohq1724 Cars running on LPG have a switch fitted that shuts off power to gas solenoid if engine not running. Maybe u could use that perhaps.
@@Hazzy238 I found a inertia cut off switch on ebay. Ordered it today
Probably want to run a cooler for the powersteering fluid
That will be my next step if the new pump and race fluid fails.
I've just ordered a oil cooler online. Thanks for your suggestion.
Lots of fun thanks for sharing the video.
No worries
Awesome 👌
Would you explain what did you mix to have that finish I need to do same job thank you
With the brush on paint, I just used it straight from the Tin. When sprayed on, I mixed it with 10% Thinners.
Love it
Thanks mate. I've heard it's a great drift track
Love the still pictures, better chance to see closely
thanks mate, some videos drive me crazy
Thanks Dave. Brought back memories. Had a HQ GTS when I was 20, had it for 4 years until a drunk didn’t give way at a stop sign and wrote both cars off. Love that car…68 now and have a VF GTS nice car but reckon I would swap it for my old HQ GTS.
I love the VF GTS. The best model ever. The HQ is no where as powerful as the VF, but they are fairly light at 1400kg and handle good if set up properly. I'm getting ready to take mine to a track day in June. I'll put up a video when I do.
Man this was helpful, just when i was about to give up, the sequence of the irons is the important part. Thanks legend.
No problem mate, glad the video helped
Any tips if ya inside latch has fallen in the door piller . I managed to get it back in with a quotehanger but I had to get a bolt on while holding the quotehanger to get hinge on . I took door back off ass my alignment wasn't great . I just fill I might of been lucky the first time I am wondering if there is a better way
I've never had the latch fall off the door piller. That sounds like a real pain in the Butt.
G' day mate. Did you blast the metal or do the 3 step process? Four years later, has it held up?
Yes, I blasted it first. I then used the rust seal, then blacktop. 4 years later, it still looks good.
@@davohq1724 good to know. I'm going to do my chassis, bit follow the method of removing excess rust scale then following the 3 step system. Fingers crossed
@@bigfellasydney6970 I did my chassis in the 3 step method. Let it dry for at least 7 to 10 days before you touch it or move it. It takes a while to harden.
@@davohq1724 thank you mate
Looking nice and neat. Overflow is cool.
Thanks mate. I would highly recommend it.
Looking good. What brand are those V belts? Getting a lot of slip after replacing my alternator belt, like for like.
Are they making a noise? I haven't had mine slip, but then I have the tension on them very tight. I'll have a look when I get a chance, to see what brand they are.
@@davohq1724yea squealing like a pig under hard acceleration. Mechanic replaced the old one when he did water pump. But this one squeals, same size belt, plenty of tension. That be good thanks 👍🏼
Dayco 15450 is whats written on the belt@@Shauny808
Good stuff Davo from an ex AussieV8 forum member.
Thanks mate 👍
I got my 5ltr built years ago with VN heads and a 355 Harrop stroker crank made a huge difference in torque and was pretty good on fuel as well.
Wish I had a 355 😁
Davo, I take it that your standard Belmont dash panel allready had the openings in it to accept the additional two smaller guages?
The steel frame behind the plastic facia, on all models should have the smaller openings for gauges.
Can you do a long term review on the KBS coating? I'm deciding whether to go with por15 or KBS.
I think they are pretty much the same. I've had no issues yet with KBS.
Great vid! Thanks for sharing. I'm restoring a Datsun 1200 vintage race car and was using a pressure gun but recently bought the exact same gun as yours. I've used it once but I now wish I'd watched your video first!
Thanks mate, I'm still learning, but I'm getting better
It’s been 4 years now, what your review after all this time? Is it as hard as they claim to be?
the car has only been registered for about 4 months now. So far the paint has been great
Fantastic work. How did you strip the underside?
Thanks mate. I used a strip disc on my angle grinder for most of it, then I finished off the hard to get spots with my sand blaster.
Hey Davo, where does the earth wire on the coloum come from. Can't seem to find it. I remember disconnecting one year ago when i pulled the wiring out.
I think it's part of the wiring loom. connects to the ignition switch
Still love the paint on this car, you did an awesome job
Thanks mate, I did a reasonable job painting it, but what really made it shine was the buffing process.
Good job mate, if it’s got a rope seal forget it they are shit and it’s an absolute dark art to install them correctly the only way to go is you have the block machined to take the modern neoprene upgrade….. There’s a video on TH-cam about 10 years old from COME racing showing how the rope seal is installed….. They also explain some oiling mods for a 308
This block uses the Neoprene seal, I'm taking it out next week, so I'll find out what I did wrong.
G’Day Davo, I’d recommend you use a SBC rear main seal or a ZOK drop in version. Get your inlet manifold hydro blasted, it brings aluminum up like new and if you aren’t planning on pulling the heads, those umbrella style valve stem seals work well for heads that are sucking a bit of oil. 👍
Thanks mate, I might try the Hydro blast.
The plastic overflow tank lets u see the coolant level easily. Is it harder to check the level with the stainless tank?
True, but they are crap. The one I have ordered is a 1 litre capacity.
Got to love the HQ. Now that Holden is gone, safe to say the HQ coupe is the best looking Holden ever built.
That's for sure
Ever come across the problem - one of these, after having replaced all the seals, not building correct pressure after putting all back togther? i have a HJ, taken the pump apart and put back together several times. it'll pump a bit but not enough pressure...
I put the Vane pump ring in wrong way at first. It was like there was no power steering. I put it in the right way and instant power steering.
@@davohq1724 no worries, I check it to make sure. Thanks.
👍🏻
My hyundai Accent makes that same sound.
I wish my Hyundai Imax did
If you are about to do this, take the keyway out of main pulley shaft before removing unless you want to trash your pump like I just did
Really a Very Very Nice Car , Well Done
Thanks mate, 4 years of dedication
Beautiful Car mate👌 I think she deserves chrome window washer and radiator overflow tanks. 😉
Maybe one day. I just want to get it on the road. Just found out that I have to do the rear wheel bearings.🙂
@davo hq OH Bummer, Yes the transport really go over everything with a fine tooth comb ay 🤨
@@andywright2606 you're right there. I had 8 inch rims before these, not aloud. The Hq also sat about an inch lower at the front, so I had to put higher springs in.
@davo hq Yes, an absolute pain in the ass they are LOL
Looks good mate 👍🏻
