What is the best way to address sleep disturbances due to hormonal changes? | Sleep Coach Q&A
What is the best way to address sleep disturbances that are due to hormonal changes? | Sleep Coach Q&A
It's always best to watch the entire video so I can walk you through the topic of today’s video through the step-by-step approach I use in my sleep coaching practice helping clients overcome their long-term insomnia and sleep problems.
But here are some chapters for you:
00:00 Introduction to sleep disturbances that are due to hormonal changes
01:35 Teaching Sleep Skills for Life
02:32 Hormonal changes that relate to sleep in your life
04:40 The three parts to hormonal changes that may affect your sleep
06:52 Emotional and mental components of hormonal changes
10:28 Sleep can be improved even if you are going through hormonal changes
12:37 Conclusions for the link between sleep disturbances and hormonal changes
In today’s Sleep Coach Q&A video, we’ll talk about insomnia and hormones, more specifically if your sleep disturbances are due to normal changes. Hormones play a very important role in how our body functions but let’s help you be more practical clear on how these may show up for you.
A lot of the time hormones are mentioned, even headlines scaremonger people into thinking that their sleep problems or insomnia are simply due to a lack of hormones or hormonal changes. But the reality is that your hormones change all the time, so the real question we have to ask is whether your hormonal changes are abnormal enough for them to affect your sleep in a negative way.
Looking at sleep and hormone balance is a better way to look at this in a practical way. When hormones are too high or low, it can lead to sleep disturbances in different ways. So looking at how you find the best treatment plan for your sleep disturbances is key.
Not every hormonal change requires medical treatment or even physical intervention. As I explained in today’s video when you work on the emotional and mental components of the bigger picture, you can still go through hormonal changes but not be majorly affected in negative ways.
Of course, in this video, I’ve given an example of menopause and sleeping problems, but there are many other situations that I see with clients in my sleep coaching practice.
If you have any questions about the things I mentioned in this video, feel free to reach out.

Thank you for watching, let me know if you have any more questions about specific hormones that you think is causing your sleep disturbances
Your surname is German but your accent is Hungarian 🇭🇺
Thank you for watching. As we continue talking about what might be stopping you from falling asleep at night, I'm curious to know how this video relates to your sleep situation. Let me know in the comments.
I never heard anybody talking so much and saying so little …. 😅what a shit load of nonsense
Thank you for watching. I'm curious to hear if you have any other sleep myth that is age group specific? Let me know in the comments.
I found this video very helpful, as I’ve been suffering from waking up too early for a while. I thought the suggestion about setting your alarm 15 minutes after normally waking up a good one and also giving yourself permission to be in rest mode until that alarm goes off. I would love to see more content on evening routine as the comments about not letting go (rather than switching off) very relevant.
Thank you for the comment. It's great to hear that this video has been so helpful. As for the evening routine, I've covered it in quite a few videos already. Letting go is definitely very different to switching off and it's a particular skill in relation to sleep. If you have a question about anything you're interested in more specifically, feel free to pop it in the next comment or contact me via my website.
Thank you for watching. Listening to something at night is a very common thing. But the real question is whether or not it really helps you to fall asleep easily every night.
I just can’t get a good nights sleep. No matter what time I go to bed I wake up so early snd feel tired but can’t go back to sleep. I go I the gym so I pay importance to my sleep but I’m so bad at it. It’s so frustration
It sounds like most of the things you're doing are physical things. When you look at sleep in a more practical way, you'll see that Sleep Skills that deal with the emotional and mental side will really make a difference. Of course, I'm not sure what you've already worked on, but if you can sleep any amount, then you can improve the sleep. Simply put it's because you already sleep but you may not know how to proactively influence how well you sleep.
Thank you for watching today's video. I'd love to hear how you found the exercise I mentioned. It's definitely a great way to figure out how a lack of physical relaxation stops you from falling asleep easily at night as well.
❤
I'm glad you enjoyed this video from 5 years ago. Feel free to check out some of the newer ones on this topic.
This is one of those really practical conversations I have with clients that help them see things in a different way. Let me know how this helped you as well.
Told them many times to be quiet they stop for a couple of days and they continue again ! I moved 2 times I changed apartments and still struggling with this problem ! Any advice ?
Talking to your neighbours is one part, but the way you respond to the issues is completely in your ability to change, see the video I liked in my other reply.
I have problem sleeping when I hear sounds ! The smallest sound wakes me up and I can’t go back to bed ! Noisy neighbours with 2 children make my life a living hell ! Found a way to relax a bit putting my headphones on and listening to a particular sound that’s how I sleep but they are banging doors and so on and I can feel it ! Please help it is really important I can’t function at work
Noises often disturb us but remember that your mind doesn't have to make these too big and something you get emotionally responsive about. Feel free to check out a newer video, where I talked about noise sensitivity and earplugs: th-cam.com/video/rZd3yKpo_cc/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for watching. Have you ever experimented with journalling type practices to help you with your long term sleep problems?
I am sorry for your loss, my father passed yesterday I cannot sleep at all
Thank you very much. I'm sure you'll have people supporting you through the next weeks. Just take your time and remember to be kind to yourself, even if your sleep is initially troubled. As your emotions settle, sleep will settle too.
Thank you for watching, let me know which part of today's video was most relevant to you
I lost my mother on Mother’s Day after a car accident in 2022. Two months later my younger sister passed. January 2024 my sister’s daughter/ my niece died. I dream of them most nights. I can’t sleep.
Thank you for the comment. These are difficult times for you I'm sure, but remember that they brought joy to you while they were around. Look after yourself and I'd suggest you speak to someone who can support you if these heightened dreams continue to disturb your sleep. Grief is often quite complex especially when you had these experiences so close to each other.
@@beatrixaschmidt I have been In grief counseling since 2022. When the hits keep coming though, it feels like I start pulling myself up just to get pulled right back down and have to start over.
Sorry for your loss my mom passed away as well I cannot sleep that well either
Thank you for the comment. I'm sure that as time passed you settled down bit by bit. Grieving and all the emotions around it can take a while to settle. I'm sure you have people around you that will help you through these challenging times.
Thank you for this. Identifying that I am going into “work mode” and problem solving is helpful. I have been waking up at 5.30am consistently for a long time now and it has become very frustrating. We have a 7 month old who has just started sleeping through the night - I want nothing more than to take advantage of this and get proper sleep again!
Thank you for the comment. This is quite a common example when your life changes and a new baby joins the family. The priorities shift and it can often cause a bit more pressure initially. Work on the different ways of relaxation in the morning rather than give up on it too early when you wake.
Ma! I have sleep problem for many years, for person like me in a developing country (Nigeria) where only medication is the option, which practically does not work, long term what should I do? I will love to hear from you.
Thank you for reaching out. I think if your resources are perhaps limited, finding a course or a self study programme can really start helping you (I have some of those available as well). Otherwise going through some of the videos I have, depending on the type of problems you struggle with (falling asleep or sleeping through the night) can start supporting you as well.
Hello doc. I thing i have chronic inomnia. I just can't fall asleep without some sleep aids and if i do get some sleep, its for a short while. I wake up in the middle of the night and can't go back to sleep. This has been happening for over two years now. I have to quit my job because of this. I just could not function at work. I am currently struggling with this problem. I need help and i just can't get the right help. I have gone to many doctors and all they have given me is sleeping aids. Where can i get some help?
I'm sorry to hear that your local medical professionals can't seem to help you. I'm not sure about your situation but of course, you can look at working with someone like me. I personally off private sleep coaching services if that is something that you want to look into. When sleep aids or sleeping tablets are involved, it can be a bit more complex situation which needs support from a trained professional like me. Most likely not a medical professional if they only offer you medication. Look for someone locally perhaps who offers practical services like sleep coaching or even therapy.
Thank you for watching. Let me know what your experience is using sleep trackers.
Thank you for watching. Let me know how this video helped you change the way you think about blue light exposure in your life.
Thank you for watching. Picking a time frame for sleep is a really good way to set the foundation for truly overcoming your sleep problems. Let me know how this video helped you to review what you have in place.
Thank you for watching. These movements that happen at night can be quite disturbing, so let me know how this video helped you see them in a different way.
I have had chronic insomnia for over forty years. One Dr told me that not sleeping wouldn’t hurt me!! I have tried sleeping tablets etc… I now have a shocking bedtime routine. I can’t fall asleep and spend hours on my iPad just trying to pass the night .
Thank you for the comment. Having a better separation between your daytime and nighttime is a really good start. But you do actually have to being able to rest without entertainment form your iPad first as one example.
Thank you
My name is Jamie, I have been suffering form insomnia for over 20 years since I had my first anxtiey attack. I have been own medication for over 18 years now. I really want to get my sleep patterns back two the year 2002.
Hi Jamie, apologies for the delay. I'd strongly suggest working with someone locally as it does sound like a more complex situation. Naturally I work with clients but I'm not sure if that is something you're interested in. The first step is to speak to someone and have an assessment for all the challenges that you're experiencing
Thank you for watching. I look forward to hearing how today's video helped you to succeed in coming off the over the counter sleep aids or medication that you might be taking.
🌸 I use rain app free on TH-cam to help me sleep The worst was 1 week no sleep and I couldn’t focus, it was horrible I ensure I do everything possible to help me prepare for sleep early on Only half cup of coffee on mornings, 2 hrs after walking Exercise daily and whole foods, rehydrate properly and I stop all activities 9:30pm and wind down, I make sure room is dark and white noise is on Prior to all of this I write to do list next day, all work is done, to ensure I am not worried about anything If I don’t do anything, I don’t sleep for days at a time I set my alarm to wake early. I wake and sleep at same time to get my body and mind used to it My method isn’t perfect, there are times I can’t sleep but I remain in bed and try to relax I have had issues since my childhood but learned to control and manage it the best I can
It's good to hear that you have a number of things that are working for you. Without overanalysing, I'd suggest you become curious about what is showing up when you can't sleep. There is always a sign to tell us what's the root cause of your problems. All the things you've mentioned are quite physically driven, but emotional and mental parts are also what we need to deal with to create full relaxation.
I like your presentation
Thank you for the comment, I appreciate it
Thank you for watching. Let me know how today's video helped you to think about going to bed in at a more appropriate time.
Thank you for explaining chronic insomnia. I have had it for 5 years.
I'm glad it was helpful
Hey , excuse my English but i'm a senior in highschool and i'm really close to my SAT's and i really need your help , so my problem is no matter how much i sleep or how early, i still can't get anything done in the day time , i literally tried everything like sleeping at 9 and waking up at 6 or 7 or even sleeping in the day time and again sleeping at 9 i still feel drenched , i really gotta get my grades up it's the only chance i have to change my life and i can't afford staying in this grade again , but i do have a few bad habits though , like don't eat enough i eat like a meal a day , and i don't eat anytypes of greens or nuts and i wake up alot after i fall asleep like when i'm dozing off and fall asleep i wake up and i know ,i feel how much i slept couse i didn't fully fell asleep like i sometimes think that i don't sleeo i just doze off until the morning ,and i also sleep with headphones on bc i'm sensitive to sounds and i'm alittle stressed bc i'm afraid I'll keep on being like this and i hope you'll help me bc there aren't any doctor specially for sleep !
Hi there Thank you for sharing more information about your situation. It does sound like, the first step would be to start looking after yourself better during the day. Stress, exam periods and not eating well can result in tiredness, but also many other things can. So I'm not in a position to help you over TH-cam comments as you really need to speak to someone who can assess you properly. Maybe you can speak to your parents or reach out to someone in your school who can provide you with some support on how to deal with these things that happen during the day. When things are more complex like this, it's really best to have a basic assessment by even a normal doctor first. Energy levels can remain low for many reasons not just because of sleep.
Thank you for watching. Using this mindset can really help you extend the time you spend being awake at night. Let me know how this video has helped you to change the way you think.
Thank you for watching! Everyone has a different experience with sleep medication, so working through a practical plan and even having support from a practitioner can really make a difference in succeeding.
Everytime i try to stay still theres just one spot in my body that starts itching and makes me scratch it
Thank you for sharing, there can be many reasons you itch, so my suggestion is to speak to someone about it locally. It might not have much to do with sleep. That way you can have an assessment and figure out what you need to stop the itching.
Thank you for watching. If you've ever taken melatonin supplements, how did they influence your sleep problems? Let me know in the comments
Dr. You so good thank s for the topic Ihave tyroid pls help me
I'm glad you found my video helpful. If you have thyroid problems, it's really best to see someone locally who can help you with that first. Sleep problems can show up as a secondary problem to other medication conditions.

Thank you for watching. I hope today's video really helped you to understand what sleep coaching is and how I work with clients in my practice.
would Relaxing music helps?
Thank you for the question. With complex and long-term insomnia, simply listening to music is too superficial. I'm not against anything but if it doesn't completely sort the problem out so you can sleep well every night consistently, it's too superficial. Of course, you know how much it helps you, and you can take it from there. If you still struggle to sleep well, then the answer becomes obvious. What I found in my practice is the longer the lack of physical, emotional and mental relaxation goes on, the less likely these very superficial and non 'retraining' actions have an influence. When I work with clients, I get them to a place when they don't 'need' anything in order to sleep well, they sleep well because they know how to physically, emotionally and mentally relax even before they go to their bedroom. I hope this clarifies it for you.
Thank you for watching. I'd like to know how you separate yourself from your technology at night? Let me know in the comments.
I’ve developed this habit over the last few months and it is really exhausting. I want to feel well rested and ready for a Monday especially since it is the beginning of the week but that idea makes me even more anxious when thinking about sleep. Thank you for the video, it’s really helping me sort this problem!
Thank you for the comment. I'm so glad to hear that my video has helped you be more relaxed and not be so concerned about Sunday night. Keep up the good work.
Thank you for watching. Once you overcome your long-term insomnia, sleeping well consistently often still takes us being proactive about all these 10 things I share. Let me know in the comments, which one of these relates to you the most?
Do you have a website?
Thank you for asking. Yes, of course, you can find it in the description of my videos underneath the main video information or through the TH-cam channel info as well.
I’m suffering from insomnia for one week . I really don’t know what makes me awake . I travel from my place to another one on the night of trip I couldn’t sleep so for many nights after that I was scared to not sleep and I think that’s what caused my insomnia ( fearing of not sleeping)
It sounds like that your insomnia is already complex with emotions and other things rising up even before you go to bed. This is therefore not about what wakes you up to begin with. If you go to bed already nervous and fearing what may happen, you're already much further from physical, emotional and mental relaxation. Which means that as you transition between sleep staged in the middle of the night, your mind becomes more active again. (This is the simplest way to describe it), therefore you have to start with dealing with the emotions and the fear before you even go to bed. My suggestion is to seek help from a local professional who can really help you with a practical plan. Whoever you work with also needs to be familiar with sleep related nervousness and fear, so that they can help you with it properly. Obviously, I also work with clients, so you can explore how you can work with me as well. I hope this helps so that you can get the support you need.
