On September 17, 2024, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Minority Health (OMH) hosted a webinar with our grant recipient, New York City Health + Hospitals (H + H) to highlight their work focused on improving the quality of life for children with sickle cell disease (SCD).
SCD disproportionately affects African Americans, and although hydroxyurea is effective in reducing pain encounters and hospitalizations, too few children are receiving this treatment. H + H increased hydroxyurea prescription rates through a unified vision for treatment shared by all provider types; online educational models for providers and patients; and an electronic medical record SCD navigator.
