Coffee table model car builds (literally). My builds are rattle can sprayed, detail painted, and my modelling tools are the most basic - files, sandpapers, detail brushes, and a few knives. Can I foil, airbrush, and purchase aftermarket parts? Absolutely I can. Do I want to spend more money on the gimmicks, bells and whistles? Nope, hobby is already expensive as it is. My “bench” is my coffee table, my shop is the living room, and my spray booth is the outdoors. I just love building kits, and I do so on a necessary budget. Like many of us, work commitments sometimes limit my building times. Oftentimes, I’ll build a model, think it’s finished given my time constraints, then realize there’s just something missing. That’s when I find myself analyzing a build like an artist staring at a canvas - then, I git r dun 🤠

The only deviations from box stock on this build, are the tires, the driver’s door mirror, and a few decals. Other than that, everything was in the kit.
AMT 1977 Monza Original Art Series. Kitbashed with a few parts.

The kit provided heads and valve covers were too big. I used the Revell 1969 Nova heads and sleeved valve cover - air cleaner and instrumentation decals are from AMT’s 1970 Z28 kit. The wheels are from AMT’s Supernatural Impala kit. The tires are from a few of my other kits. The side pipes are from MPC’s Turtle Wax Dodge van.

The 350 LT1 engine in this build, is from AMT’s 1970 Camaro Z28. The air cleaner, and headers are from Revell’s 1969 Nova SS. The wheels and tires are from AMT’s 1965 Mustang kit. Painted with Tamiya TS base coat, and TS Pearl Clear.

Started with AMT’s Pepper Shaker ‘57 Chevy kit. Decals used from a few other kits. Shifter from my parts bin. Wheels, tires, front suspension and ladder bars are from the AMT ‘55 Nomad 3n1 kit. I had to widen the windshield opening, as it was too narrow from the roofline to the cowl. I also had to shave down the lower cab rockers as they were too big. Model painted Tamiya TS Gloss Black, TS White, TS Tan, and TS Dull coat. Modifications include the 440 with automatic transmission, and door mirrors from the Revell ‘69 Dodge Dart kit. The whip antenna is an old guitar string. Model is painted Tamiya TS Pearl Yellow, and TS Semi Gloss Black. Box stock, minus the front fender stripes, tires, and the yellow slapper bars.

I painted this model with Tamiya TS Lavender and TS Pearl Clear - painted outside straight out of the rattle can. Trim painted Testors metallic silver, freehand (no masking) using a Leonhardy 5/0 Rein Rotmarder Red Sable paint brush.

Painted outside under the sun, with Tamiya TS Mica Red, and TS Pearl Clear. Valve covers and steering wheel are from AMT’s ‘65 Mustang. Fuel injection unit and under dash gauges are from AMT’s ‘55 Nomad kit - giving this model a ‘60s era street racing vibe. Trim hand painted with metallic silver using my Leonhardy 5/0 Rein Rotmarder Red Sable detail paint brush.

Kit bashed build with parts from the 1967 Impala SS kit, and the 1968 El Camino SS kit. Painted outside in the midst of a fairly mild Canadian winter. @@ClassicChrome86 thanks, a lot of that credit belongs to Round 2 though. I’ve had past reissues of this kit in different iterations when I was a kid. The engraving left a lot to be desired in the old reissues I’ve had - this newer reissue sold as the “Pepper Shaker”, has amazingly crisp engraving. I only had to do a bit of scribing along the door and trunk lines.

Thanks. That’s one of the coolest things about our hobby - the artistry. When I first completed this kit, it had no decals and was riding stock height with the kit provided keystone wheels, and kit provided whitewalls. As I looked at it - something was missing. I then applied the decals and it brought it to life a bit. It sat on my shelf for another 3 or 4 months. I even posted it on here in its previous form. The response was the same as mine - flat. Something was missing. I picked up the AMT 55 Nomad 3n1 kit and used the racing parts, raised it up with the front and rear suspension, ladder bars, slicks and new wheels - voila, I was excited even before the glue dried - I knew it was complete 👍👍👍

Thanks everyone. I’ve got another one unbuilt, I want to either make, or find a flat hood - then I want to locate a standard dash, and make a stock Satellite eventually. In kit form, this build is a very simple and fun build. After paint and a bit of detailing - I was able to cleanly assemble it in about 4 hours. The only complaint I have is that the stripe decals crumbled when wet. That’s why I ended up with a second kit - tried all of the stripes, in warm water, cold water, hot water, and with dish soap - they all crumbled.

@@carouselofcrazychrisb my dad had a brown ‘75, and my uncle had two brand new brown ‘76 Ford 4X4s back in the day as part of his ranch/hot shot fleet. I was going to spray clear over this to gloss it up, but the hobby shop was out of clear - I decided to leave it dull. If the kit had a more accurate box and drivetrain I definitely would’ve waited to clear it.

@@carouselofcrazychrisb yeah, took extra time to fit, cut, and align to get it sitting straight. I had a few of these nearly exact kits back in the 1980s so I knew what I was getting into.

@@BigSkyModelWorkshop it’s an awesome kit. Things I would’ve done differently in assembling it though, and will keep in mind for Moebius kits. Next Moebius kit, I’ll test fit the glass a lot more before final installation - the separate outside installed glass is a great feature. I’m just accustomed to my older style kits.
