Not required by law in New Zealand. Instances of driving above 50kmph with passengers in Auckland are rare. Very often 30kmph is the limit. Seatbelts would also restrict driver's self-defense in the instance of an attack, eg with a knife.

drivers are very short staffed, working 11-12 hour shifts, also have been instructed by management to meet daily time schedules so drivers are extremely stressed hence why passengers have to use the hand rails once on the bus... the last thing they need is to be punched in the head

If they waited for everybody to get a seat, you'd be complaining about lateness. They would never be on time. Dwells are the biggest factor in slowing the service your ignorant person.

They'll do it whatever time they have to drive a route. It's just dumb sloppy driving. I don't condone the punch but I understand why it happened. That driver might think twice about waiting for passengers to sit in future.

True, and thats why there's handle bars, vertical and top of seats, there for grabbing onto as many times the buses are full and people have to stand.. you can also see where this guy walked upto the bus driver while the bus was in motion, before landing his cowardly blow, obviously the bus moving had no affect to his stabilty however thats his reasoning for punching the driver.. go figure?

Bwhat if an old elderly lady just got on and the bus driver took off? Aye? What if the old elderly lady fell over and caused a head injury? Is it the old elderly lady fault because she didn’t sit fast enough because the bus driver had a tight schedule? Please. Bus drivers have to wait for people to be seated. All bus drivers know that.

@@Dickgoodbody Nothing to think about. You work for the public, there’s health and safety rules you must oblige by. The drivers already had three written warnings for this issue. To do it again shows he didn’t learn the last time. If he can’t handle the time table schedule then he should simply find another job. A fully licensed bus driver can pick up a job anywhere. No one’s standing up for the idiot passenger, but for this to be escalated as it did, it will definitely teach the bus driver a valuable lesson, health and safety over your job. Number one rule in every workplace. If the passenger did get seriously harmed instead of just a shoulder barge to the chair / pole. AT and the bus driver will be getting the biggest fine from work-safe. Hence why the drivers supervisor had to suspend him.

@@karipaturketo5438 It’s driver’s responsibilities for the safety of the passengers. You do realise there are people out there, that would go flying even if holding on to a hand rail. Body weight + momentum. The strength of a oversized male / female, the strength of and elderly wouldn’t be able to hold on that strong. Think before you say something dumb next.
