Sub-Zero Shootout - Stove Fuels Head to Head in Cold Weather!
A Comparison of camping stove fuels in real winter conditions. Here I take every butane and isobutane canister I could find along with a multi fuel liquid fuel stove, freeze them outside overnight at -15 degrees, then try to boil water with each one when the temperature is between -5 and 5 degrees. The results might surprise you! should you rely on canister stoves in the winter or not? The results seen here support my experiences with them in multiple real life scenarios.

Big Agnes Mica Basin - Worst or Best Camp Chair on the Market?

In this video I cover how to tie an Alpine Butterfly step by step, and I also cover my experiences with it. Alpine Butterfly's can be used to make a loop, attachment point, or hand/foot hold in the center of a rope. They are strong, secure, and can cope with pulling in any direction. It's a great knot for the outdoorsman to know and use.

    I've used this tent in nasty southern patagonian weather and it's been a total bombshelter. I've used it in winter expeditions in Tierra del Fuego and it came with me to the southern patagonian icefield many times. Yes, it's heavy for the size, but for the price tag it has few to none things to envy with way more expensive tents.

    Anything below 30 degrees F for isobutane begins to degrade performance. Below about 15 degrees F at lower altitudes and what you demonstrated in this video is the result. You can preheat the fuel canister inside your jacket or sleeping bag then place it on an insulated surface such as a piece of closed cell foam. Next attach your Moulder strip (search for it and choose the Backpacking Light search result; no membership required to read it) and a neoprene cozy to insulate the canister some as it cools from use. Then light your stove. If you protect it from wind you should be able to operate a stove such as a Pocket Rocket Deluxe, that is regulated, down to a temperature close to zero degrees F. A better choice but possibly a little heavier one is a remote canister stove that is designed to run with an inverted canister. You will still want to insulate the canister and warm it just prior to lighting the stove in the upright position initially, then once it’s running and heating the preheat tube in the burner, then invert the canister. Then you’re in business. But really if you’re out in temperatures that are consistently below 15 degrees F then you really need a liquid (white) gas stove and larger pot in case the only way to get water is to melt snow.

    A trangia burner or diy alcohol stove will boil faster, and be much lighter than the sterno cans. The rest of the kit is dope

    I have wo of them. They are great for the quietness and just getting something hot, not necessarily boiling, even though it is doable. I really do not pay attention on the time it takes to do it. I go to the woods to hunt or fish and time is irrelevant to me. I have also used an alcohol stove in mine. It does heat up my coffee water a little faster.

  • @walkerone9833
    @walkerone9833 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    All fuels will take longer in cold weather. Denatured alcohol will burn hotter. Sterno has always been to keep items warm. No more. It works but there are more efficient methods even in cold weather. Nice vid. It is kind of cool because they updated the design to be/look more Jet Boil like.

    Try a remote canister stove with a preheat tube over or next to the burner that can be used with the canister inverted which will feed liquid fuel first to the preheat area that can be used to around 0 deg F

    Used Sterno in the woods for years, no noise and a chance to enjoy my surroundings. Speed is overrated, set it up and get it going as you make/break camp, your water will be ready for you when you are done. It does work well when other stoves freeze up and fail. Relax, you are in the woods. For Larger pans, the cheap folding stove would be better.

    Pretty spot on. I picked it up as a factory second and used it on a couple of trips to Alaska. This tent really shines in wet and damp weather. As a 1+ person tent, there was plenty of room for my gear, sleeping kit etc. Camping in Alaska is camping in a rainforest. It was bone dry on the inside during the whole trip, and that's what I needed.

    This is about the best, and for that matter, only decent review I’ve seen on this tent. I have one, and agree with everything you’ve said. It is kind of an oddball in that it’s not the best choice for backpacking, being on the heavy side, and it’s too small for two people and too heavy for one. It was given to me as a Christmas present, so I’ve had to live with its little foibles. The stakes they supplied are pretty chintzy, and not enough of them. I’ve bought a bunch of MSR stakes to augment them. I also found it not overly intuitive to set up; you really need to have the directions handy. All in all, thank you for your review.

    Those gelled fuel cans aren't designed to cook with. Their designed to keep food warm. If you want to cook with them, it needs more oxygen. Use a can opener to remove the entire top of the fuel can. Now your cooking.

      As long as they have plenty of power they should be good to go. You could us a compression tester to get the real answer, or pull the muffler off and inspect the piston for any vertical scratches. This is more of a should I buy this saw at a garage sale test.

    • @sawtoothmountainoutdoors6106
      @sawtoothmountainoutdoors6106 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not tried that chair, but I have used similar ones. it really comes down to what you are going to be using it for. If you are going backpacking then get the Skyline, it is about half a pound lighter and packs a little smaller. if you are not going long distance backpacking then I would get the Mica Basin because it is a little larger than the Skyline. The bottom line is that the larger the chair the more comfortable it is. Probably the way to go is to get the biggest chair that you think is reasonable for how you will transport it most of the time.

    Can I give you a couple of tips; 1. Put some duct tape, three or four thicknesses, about 2"×1" on the part of the cup you drink from, to protect your lips from burning. 2. Ditch the lid and use three or four thicknesses of aluminium foil in lieu of it. 3. Make a Fancy Feast , or similar, stove to use as your heat source. Use methylated spirits, yellow 'heet' or some other form of denatured alchol as your fuel and you will still have a 'silent' cooking system. Good hunting and happy trails !

    Not really a good test if bearings are spun and there is a crankcase leak due to side seals being weak. A saw can have a lot of compression however bottom components may be weak. Also if there is major signs of scoring or overheating metal slag can jam in between the piston and cylinder walls especially if a piston has holed and hot aluminum spatter got on the cylinder walls causing the piston to slightly jam and that can give faulty diagnosis doing it that way.
