A Day in Italy: The First Things I do in a New Country
Discovering a New City in a Day | Exploring Italy
I’m in Turin, Italy. In this video I explore how to get oriented in a new city quickly. This is how we spent a day in the city getting got know it, from a “free walking tour” to a museum visit and a spontaneous event.
In this video:
**Walking Tour Tips** - See why I recommend starting with a local-guided, pay-what-you-wish walking tour to get your bearings and pick up hidden gems from experts.
Historical Insights- We explored the Royal Palace of Turin to gain a better understanding of the city’s royal heritage and the history of the Savoy family. *Edit: The Holy Shroud is no longer housed in the Chapel of the Holy Shroud but in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, which is connected to it and the Royal Palace.
Here is an article on the Chapel: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chapel_of_the_Holy_Shroud
Explore on Your Own - Local events and festivals like the Terra Madre food festival are great places to start for an authentic experience.

Moving to Italy
มุมมอง 22Kหลายเดือนก่อน
I moved to Italy. This story started decades ago when my wife’s grandmother left Mussolini’s Italy, setting off a chain of events that eventually led us back here. In this video, I share how we ended up living in Italy, from navigating the complicated Italian visa process to be able to stay here long term. It wasn’t easy, but, after a year and a half of planning and figuring things out, we made...

Language learning was something that I didn’t know I could get into until I gave it a shot when I had a few free months during the pandemic. I have to say that it made a huge impact on my life. It helped me better understand my capabilities and opened my mind to a whole other world of cultures, humor, and ways of thinking about the world and others. In this video I share the game and how I sele...

Sharing my experience at Kelingking Beach so you don't make the same mistakes I made! In a nutshell, when you visit Kelingking Beach: - Don't bring a big backpack - Don't wear flip-flops - Don't be hungover - Don't go swimming if you're not a strong swimmer especially at high tide when the currents are stronger. Turin: the italian capital city of esotericism. 😁 Not for nothing it is the city of Gustavo Rol.
This is awesome!!! Just a wonderful guide to the language learning journey!! Thank you!
@@slavensimunovic319 thanks!!
Very helpful first video.
Welcome to Italy. Turin is amazing.
Apparement des gens sont morts ici à cause du courant, à la fois, si déjà en Bretagne du nord des gens se noient à se balader au bord de l’eau… oui il faut toujours être prudent avec la mer !
If you are trying to become a resident it’s Torino use as much authentic Italian pronounce the names right and at least pretend you are trying to become local if you want to be taken seriously.
I agree, I always use “Torino” in my daily life. I originally recorded it that way but I chose to use “Turin” instead because it’s a video in English and that’s just the name for the city in English. I’m not sure why every language has different names for places or languages. “German” for example, to Germans it’s “Deutsch”, to Italians it’s “Tedesco”, to spanish speakers it’s “Alemán”… Probably a good topic for a future video! Thanks for your comment.
You have said all the words I want to say. Best of luck with your plans.
My first visit to Italy was in 2018... and I went again in 2022.... and I love it. Is it the art and the artitecture, the location, the culture and the people? I don't know... but I know I love it. I wouldn't mind moving to Italy... but I have little Italian DNA... and I don't have a lot financially.
Holy Cannoli, thank you so much for the resources for guided tours. I so appreciate it!
Glad you like them!
Awesome video, love traveling & really getting a feel for a place too. I also got citizenship through decent, took me a little over 5 years in total from start to finish. Absolutely painful but worth it.
Thanks! Wow, long time! That's awesome you got it in the end.
I also love the walking tours they really help you navigate a new city and the food recommendations are great too!
They really are a great way to get to know a new place!
Great timing. I'm visiting Turin next week for a week (going to see the All Blacks vs Italy). I moved to Italy a little while ago and I'm enjoying your Italy videos. What is the culture course you're doing?? I wonder if there is something similar in my region. My Italian language is pretty good, but there are major cultural gaps in my knowledge, and if I'm going to live somewhere I think it is good to learn about the history, and to have a common point of reference when talking with people that have lived here their whole lives.
Thanks! I’m taking classes through an Italian language school and I’m sure most are pretty similar. They have classes in Italian for advanced learners about art history, fashion, business and things like that. They also organize tours and activities several times a week that are all in Italian as well. I would ask the Italian language school in your area to see what they offer!
@iancfrancis Thanks. I'll have a look for my nearest language school here in Friuli and look at what they offer.
❤💙💚
Great ideas! I am just beginning to travel more as I prepare for long-term travel in retirement. Taking a walking tour to start sounds great!
Thanks! It's a great way to learn the history, culture, and geography of a new place in a short time!
Great video! Thank you! Turin is waiting for all of you! 👑😃
Thank you, Angelo! You’re a great tour guide, I recommend everyone to go for a tour through Free Tour Turin!
Los esperamos por Barcelonaaaa 🥰🥰♥️♥️
No podemos esperar para visitarlos, somos prácticamente vecinos!!
My husband is seeking citizenship through his grandmother, here in CA . This has been ongoing for about a year and a half. We are hoping that within the next 6 months, the process will be over and we can move. It cannot come soon enough!
Thanks for your comment! Great to hear your in the home stretch!
Hello Ian, thank you for your videos, I find them quite interesting. Question: you live out of a suitcase, but do you have a home base somewhere, where you keep more belongings, have a permanent address for bank accounts, cell phones registrations, etc.. How are you dealing with these constraints?
Hi! Thanks for your comment. We have family in the US where we keep our permanent address. If you’re in the US, you can also get an address at the UPS store. You rent a box for around $150 a year I believe, and it’s an actual address not a “PO Box”, so you can use it for anything that you would use a normal address for. As for our belongings, we don’t have many, we sold most things and gave up our apartment in 2021 when we wanted start traveling long term. Now we rent furnished apartments, we have one here in Italy. Hope that answered your question!
@@iancfrancis Thank you very much for this detailed answer, I appreciate it. Again, thank you!
This makes me miss European food, especially Italian ❤ Nice to see you’re settling in and exploring !
Thanks Malini! I miss Italian food too, every day, in the hours between lunch and dinner 😂
Don't be a stronza or stronzo!! Great work young man!!
Great advice! I haven’t done the walking tours. Are there any geared towards kids?
Thanks! I would think there are 🤔 I’ll have to look into that!
Beautiful video, Ian! Thanks again for sharing! Grazie di cuore!
Grazie mille !!
Great advice, we too have always done a free guided walk when arriving somewhere new.🎉
It's a great way to get to know the city.
The free walking tours are so fun, you do all the sight seeing, and you get to meet people from all over the world. I love your idea of taking the bus to watch and experience the local life as well. Well done! 👌
Thanks! I agree, it’s a great way to get a feel for a city and meet people from all over the world.
Well, welcome, and I hope you’ll have a great time, I’m planning on moving from Italy to another country, for experience, to see a bit of the world, and one day I’ll probably come here again. We’re given one life and an amazing world, I love people who come back to their ancestors’ roots, or just people who explore, who live, have an amazing time in your new home!
Thank you, I agree, life is for living! Good luck to you, were ever you decide to go.
@@iancfrancis Thank you!
I left Italy in 1984 when I was 9 . We moved back in 1994 and then returned to the USA in 2000. I love Italy, but I have built a worldwide business in California. I’m now 49 years , and my 17 year old son is moving to Turin next year to play in Serie B for Juventus . All I can tell you is that home is where the heart is , for me at this moment California USA is my home , but would love to live in Italia in the future as I decide to pursue my professional cycling career 😄 Buona Fortuna .
Grazie, it’s good to hear that you’ve tried different places and found what’s best for you. Good luck to you and your son in the future, maybe I’ll see him play in a match one of these days!
movin to italy to make things "move faster", erhmmm...you're quite optimistic there ;D
😂 yes.
I'm glad that I stumbled upon your video about moving to Italy. I will follow along and learn as much as I can from you about the process. You've already shared a lot of great info and I'm taking down notes. My siblings and I have been in the process of applying for dual citizenship, but the new law that went into affect has caused a snag that we now have to determine what route to take. I am 100% American-Italian with family still living living in Modena (Emilia-Romagna) and have visited many times. I am retiring from higher education in December and want to live my retired years on my own terms with a bit of adjustment for my non-Italian husband who does not share my zeal for living in Italy. He is 81 years old and said that he could see doing short stays of 2 months. Hey, that's better than nothing! Anyhow, I look forward to learning more from your experiences during this new phase of your life. Ciao, Roz
Thank you! It sounds like you have a great plan in motion for a very exciting time in your life! Who knows, maybe when you get there your husband won’t want to leave. Wishing you the best on your journey!
Is this all your own photography? It’s beautiful, great editing too. My husband and I have retired early and my son is graduating high school in a year. We are thinking of selling what we own, including our home here in the US, and start traveling. We are researching so many options, including buying a small vacation home somewhere like Italy to use as a home base and then traveling Europe from there. The idea of slow travel is very appealing to us. We have never been outside the US, other than cruises, but like you say, that sort of travel feels shallow. I’m going to subscribe, I really vibe with your perspective. I hope you continue making videos, you deserve more subscribers. May the algorithms favor you. I will look, but I hope you have or plan to make videos about how to plan a slow travel itinerary. Like is it better to rent an apartment? Stay in a hotel? How far ahead do you book things before leaving a place? Does that all depend on the country? Thanks so much ☺️
Thanks! Yes, I film everything myself. That’s great to hear your planning on traveling long term, and thanks for all of the suggestions for future topics to cover! When traveling in Europe long term just make sure you’re familiar with the Schengen Area and its regulations. Safe travels!
Lovely video! Thanks for sharing! Cheers from Brazil!
Grazie, and Cheers from Italy!
I'd love a video about the long term study visa process, I'm trying to figure it out too. I am looking at year long language programs so I can reach fluency as quickly as possible.
I’m taking an 8 month “academic year”course and I really love it so far. I’m looking into making a video about long-term study visas soon.
I have 1 % italian blood does that count for italian citizenship 😅
Why are you moving... unacceptable
Nice summary. I've been a slow traveler for a long time. I have visited 35 countries in most of which I spent more than a month at a time. I have also lived in four countries. As Ian said: if you want to learn anything about a country and its people, you need to spend some time there. The longer you stay, the more you become one of them and the more you feel at home. Speaking the language of your host country makes for an even more profound experience. If money is an issue, you can become a house-sitter and save the money you would normally spend on accommodation. Getting to know all these countries has been a great experience throughout and I don't see myself stopping anytime soon.
My boyfriend and I are doing the recognition of our Italian citizenship in Italy as well. We arrived 1 month ago, and we're in love with the people, the food, the culture, and the coffee😂. Everything has been wonderful so far. Hope you both all the best!
Thank you, it sounds like you’re having a great experience! Good luck with the process!
Wonderful! Can you, please, tell me where in Italy 4;22 is?
Sure! These are the mountains surrounding the village of Vernante near the French border. The town was once the home of Attilio Mussino, the most famous illustrator of Pinocchio. Many of the homes there have Pinocchio murals on them.
It's funny, I am Italian, from Liguria and I left to never return. Who knows maybe one day my grandchildren might return.... My kids are all dual national and bilingual - I have become a British citizen and I do not regret it. I like my life in the UK
It’s great you found somewhere you feel at home. It’s also great that you’ve given your kids and grandkids the option to choose where they’d like to go in the future. Thanks for your comment!
@@iancfrancis just to clarify, I haven't got grandchildren yet 🤣

My partner and I are saving enough money and shifting careers to remote options to be able to move to Italy. I'm Italian, working towards getting my British citizenship and my partner already has UK and EU passports. The timeline is a year and a half, hopefully. 🎉
good luck with your goals!
Benvenuto!
Grazie!
Beautiful storytelling! Love the cinematography and message of your videos, sure your subscribers will explode soon
Thank you!
I'm using my decent as well. Paperwork is almost done after 3 years. Once I go, I'm gone for good!
I’d love to find out more about the option you took to stay in Italy for a year please. 🇮🇹
25 years ago I moved from Canada to Germany. I miss somethings, but have a great family found good friends and don‘t regret it. Enjoy and explore! I am looking forward to your videos.
Ian, best intro ever! Great attitude and approach. I bought my retirement home in Umbria, and if all goes according to plan, I will be landing in Italy early January 2026. I will be going with the Elective Residence Visa since I will be retired. My goal is to make my last 20 years my best. I too will try to utilize TH-cam as a video record of the trials and tribulations related to the process. I am learning the language little by little and overall making good progress. Please check my channel out as any support is welcome. I look forward to your videos yet to come.
Thank you, that's awesome! I'm sure you'll have some amazing stories to tell!
