Welcome to my channel! I'm a professional naturalist, outdoor educator and birder who loves to share his personal birding knowledge and experiences with others, all for the sake of growing people's love for birds! The Ovenbird is the avian culprit that sparked my interest in the amazing world of birds back in 1998. Since then it has become a representative of all I love about birds.
I post a variety of videos including many engaging stories of my many birding exploits, educational videos and fun bird footage. Enjoy!

Days 13 & 14 - Monuments, Badlands & Heading Home On the final days of my North Dakota Birding Road Trip I start "heading" home to Michigan. But on the way I stop to tour the Crazy Horse and Mount Rushmore Monuments and tour through Badlands National Park among other things. And it wouldn't be a road trip with out some stops on the way home afterward either! What additional experiences and bird...
Days 11 & 12 - Birding the Black Hills - North Dakota Birding Road Trip
มุมมอง 426ปีที่แล้ว
On days 11 & 12 of my North Dakota Birding Road Trip I go birding in Black Hills of South Daktota. The Black Hills are an island of mountains amongst a sea of grasslands. This dramatic change in scenery results in a change of the birdlife as well. What new birds will I pursue and encounter? Along the way I slow down and spend some time with my favorite bird of western North America, the America...

What other birds, wildlife and unique geographic features will I find along the way? Watch and see! Make sure to sub...

On day 9 of my North Dakota Birding Road Trip I tour the South Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. From wildlife of both furred and feathered kind, human encounters with people from back home to beautiful scenery, this is a good example of a traditional vehicle tour in a National Park. What birds and wildlife will I cross paths with? How close to home is my human encounter? Watch and see!...

And what special end-of-day treat am I in for? Watch and see! Make sure to subscribe and click the notifications bell to s...

On day 7 of my North Dakota Birding Road Trip I head for Theodore Roosevelt National Park, via a stop in Montana! In my quest to see 50 birds in all 50 states, Montana was to close to not give it a try. I spend the morning a few miles over the border at Brush, Lake, State, Park, andParry Waterfowl Production Area. Will I hit 50? What birds and adventures will I have? Watch to find out! Make sur...

brilliant video
Glad you enjoyed it!
What were the dates of the trip
May 28-30, 2021 as stated in the video.
what month was this trip? What were the dates?
May 27-28, 2021 as shown at the start of the video.
Can you tell me about your vortex scope and camera mount . Planning on a trip in May and hoping to upgrade our optics.
I use the Vortex Diamondback 80mm, 20-60 zoom scope on a sturdy Manfrotto tripod with quick release legs and single handle tripod head. I hope this helps.
Great video Welcome to South Dakota
Thanks! 😃
Good tips but keep those hummingbirds away from the jelly. ☠️
Very sweet and beautiful owl
Congrats on the Boreal & Ptarmigan! 🙌
Thank you so much 😀
That’s a rugged road! 😳
Sure is!
Great video!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it
I would like to see those too.
What an adventure! Your dashboard toy bird looks a little bit like a Bridled titmouse. What is your companion mascot?
Yes you could say that! It was a Blue Jay
That was awesome footage of the Burrowing Owl in flight! I have never caught them moving more than a short distance.
Same here!
What an adventure, thanks for sharing it!
Glad you enjoyed it!
We had exactly the same experience in Scenic -- looking for a gas station, without success. This was in 1983, though, and Scenic wasn't (quite) a ghost town yet.
Somehow I missed this when you posted. So glad to see your Denali adventure.
Thanks for watching (and waiting for this long overdue episode)!
Awesome footage of the Boreal Owl!
Many thanks!
This is so sick! I love that area! Great footage!!
Thanks a ton!
Nice job! My birds need a water bath. I'd like to make something on a larger scale than a simple bird bath. Something about the size of yours would be great.
Awesome video!
Thanks!
Glad you were able to have a good trip Curtis and that you were able to be some of the last people to drive on the national park road until the bridge is built!
Thanks! I hope I can go back some day when it’s open again and go all the way to Wonder Lake.
Where is episode 5? Amazing videos!
I’m working on it now and aim to have it out very soon. Sorry it’s taken so long! In the meantime, check out my North Dakota Birding Road Trip videos from this past summer!

Ptarmigan, my nemesis group too. I've looked in Jasper and Colorado in known locations without success, I've even contemplated going to Yellowknife where they are said to be common at certain times of year. I feel your pin.
Best of luck to you with your ptarmigan search!
Ty for sharing!
My pleasure!
Great series Curtis! It looks like we need your next travel to be to Utah/Idaho/Washington, Louisiana, or the northeast to fill in that map more!
You got it! They are all states I’ve been to but not as a birder. 50 birds in all 50 states is the goal and I’m sticking to it!
I had fun following along with you. I wish I had your ear for identifying birds!!!
Great series, totally enjoyed each episode.
Thank you!
Arguably the most entertaining bird in the world... especially if captured well on film. Excellent work 👏
I agree on them being entertaining for sure! Thank you!
Ps there were a lot of Dippers in the stream running through Copper Mountain resort area.
I just got home from the CFO/WFO conference in Colorado and I found my first Dusky Grouse. I guess I need to visit The Dakotas in the the spring! Thanks for the videos.
Congrats on the Dusky Grouse!
I just got back from Copper Mountain in Colorado. I was there for the CFO/WFO Conference. There were Dippers seen all along the creek that runs through the complex. So much fun to watch. Thank you for your video.
Very cool! Thanks for sharing!
North Dakota rest area humor!!
Getting some good birds for your list. 👍
You bet! I love the lifers and seeing the ones I’ve seen before, especially when I don’t get to see them often! Thanks for watching!
Truly relaxing. Looked like the Dipper was about to take some moss to use as nesting material. 😄 Thanks for sharing! 🙂🐦
That was my thought too!
Nice wild places. I like bisons
Nice chapter. I'm watching all of them. I love meadowlarks

Feel free to promote my channel but i don’t desire to pay to promote it. Thanks!
Oh my goodness! Stay safe. 10+ miles and not enough water with buffalo blocking you at the end. This will be a day too remember.
Yes it will certainly not be forgotten!
Interesting trip. Wilson's phalarope I can see some months ago, maybe all of them migrate to the north. American avocet is not known by me, it's a really beautiful bird
Yes, both breed in the US and are migratory. Phalaropes go further (South America) while avocets only go as far as Mexico. Where/when do you see phalaropes?
@@Ovenbirder Hi, I live in Argentina, in the pampas plains
Wow! I’d love to go birding there some day! It’s so great to make connections with people on the other end of the migrations the birds we both see accomplish.
Incredible birding spot. 👍
(11:30 I only see Ring-billed Gulls, light iris, black mark a thick streak over the whole bill-tip and no red spot on the lower mandible to be seen... does this destroy your 50 birds count there?)
Good catch! It was a classic case of tunnel vision. I had ID’d them from further away and the lighting made their eyes all look dark. I never questioned my ID afterward (my mistake!) and didn’t even catch it when editing the video! How embarrassing!🤦 I’ve blurred the label in the video. Thanks for the correction!
@@Ovenbirder Hopefully you didn't have Ring-billed on the list, so you still got your 50! (Also: Gulls tend to be difficult!)
@@Hummingbirder1no I didn’t have it on the list, so my numbers are in tact!
Amazing birds, scenery, narrating! I'm adding this place to my bucket list for sure.
You should!
Thanks for taking me along. I admire your hearing abilities!
Birdy Num Num.
Ummm... I was wondering why you showed us the toilet, but now I get it. DANG that was nice! Congrats on making it to North Dakota! That "Michigan" stop looks like where I lived in Central IL!
I like to have a little fun on my trips, and in my videos - doing some of the things people otherwise wouldn’t think of!
You almost murdered my favorite bird!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh no! I’m certainly glad I didn’t - that would have been tragic!
What a fantastic birding day!
