    Why do you all carnivore / keto guys seem to look so stressed-out with gaunt, droopy eyes with severe complexion aging and fat loss under the eyes ? Shouldn't all that super and proper nutrition should reflect a youthfulness also ? Could it be super high levels of cortisol and adrenaline, kept so by animal foods and its stress on a monkey's body also having one recover faster with less sleep but look like a zombie afterwards ? Best hattrick for loosing weight and keeping one athletic but maybe not so good for nice aging?!

    You cannot track the effects of food your body is sensible or even intolerant to, especially after intentionally moving away from those foods for suficient periods of time to cancel any adaptations and microbiome that would have helped 😊 A chill plant based eater might be more unbiased when testing meat sincerely. Not a stressed-out already paleo individual blaming foods for the destruction of a bad life and too much working out ... All carnivores cannot really go back to plants because their gut as healed as it is lost all adaptations for those ... Good, bad ? 😊

    I agree that you need to allow yourself to let the athletes you coach to surprise you! it’s unfair to anyone in your life to mentally keep them in a box. People can always go beyond what you think they can do, so keeping that mindset is important

  • @sebasgonzalez6080
    @sebasgonzalez6080 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’m not very experienced as a coach, but from my experience as an athlete the program really works at its best when there are people who can support the staff’s goals effectively. Transport, communication with administration, and even things like providing food can be better handled by volunteers or caretakers. Leadership can keep a program moving forward smoothly when open lines of communication are held with those people.

  • @sebasgonzalez6080
    @sebasgonzalez6080 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree that rowing in rough water can be helpful. There are many times when rough water can refresh the focus of a very consistent but stale workout schedule, as well as times where having recent experience in bad weather can produce better results when racing in similar conditions. Although, a bad rough water day can leave athletes feeling in poor shape, and leave them dragging for a few days. It’s important, I feel, to weigh the consequences of poor conditions before committing to them.

  • @sebasgonzalez6080
    @sebasgonzalez6080 ปีที่แล้ว

    Mixing skill levels from my experience has led to some of my most productive rows. More experienced athletes are able to either challenge themselves or analyze for flaws, while less experienced rowers will find more confidence, or use the higher skill level row to discover what they need to work on.

    • @annemonte3039
      @annemonte3039 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally agree! I love that we have the opportunity to put our high school athletes in our middle school boats. There is no better way to learn than through the people around you, so by having a set boat and being surrounded by higher skill levels, learning can be accelerated.

  • @sebasgonzalez6080
    @sebasgonzalez6080 ปีที่แล้ว

    It’s definitely okay to give youth athletes opportunities and challenges even if you aren’t 100% confident or sure of their abilities or capacities. The feeling of surprise when they exceed your expectations is very rewarding, and the direction that comes from losses or underperformance can be very helpful in singling out issues. More importantly, it proves to the athletes that they are up to any challenges or goals that they may be faced with. Validation and assuredness of what they are capable of is something that coaching may not be able to instill through planned workouts and the like.

  • @sebasgonzalez6080
    @sebasgonzalez6080 ปีที่แล้ว

    Keeping rowing interesting and engaging for youth rowers is difficult, and sometimes tedious, but I agree it is rewarding. Coaching them towards certain goals is best done within a wider frame work, rather than the hard work and far off goals being the sole draw. A year of investment to see a season through is a long time for youth rowers compared to older athletes who have already dedicated a great amount of time and attention. I feel it’s important to recognize that.

  • @annemonte3039
    @annemonte3039 ปีที่แล้ว

    I strongly agree that one of the most important things when teaching someone a new sport is to make it fun! It is summer break for our kids, so it is important that we make our camp fun so our kids want to come back each and every day.

  • @annemonte3039
    @annemonte3039 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think communication is super important whenever you are trying to teach someone something new. In college, a lot of my teammates struggled to listen to our coaches based off of their communication styles. I never want my athletes to feel uncomfortable by my communication style. I try to be mindful whenever giving feedback to anyone in my life by putting myself in their shoes and imagining how i would feel to receive this feedback.

  • @sebasgonzalez6080
    @sebasgonzalez6080 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hearing about how the various ways competition is perceived and discussed in a more self contained sport like rowing is interesting. From my experience a lot of pressure bears down on rowers when faced with external factors like other teams expected times or how environmental factors may throw doubt on their efforts. “Gaming it out” always feels like a good way to stay informed about competition, but it can also split a boat’s focus and expectations when not specifically applied to a practical game plan.

  • @sebasgonzalez6080
    @sebasgonzalez6080 ปีที่แล้ว

    As a newer coach I ran into the problem of self analysis among newer rowers pretty quickly. That and conversation about how to help those rowers improve among other coaching staff was difficult. Patience so as to more thoroughly observe errors and planning out what I eventually conveyed to those rowers was necessary in teaching them, I think. Specificity in questioning and defining expectations was a large part of that.

    the administrators are just saying to pout a lid on their budget-they have people coming into their office every day saying we need a women's softball team, mens swimming, etc etc and varsity budget..most school have to make tough budgetary decisions...ND if you get a capable coach they will be string advocates for new funding...

    It's interesting how all these factors are in a mutually reciprocal relationship. Someone who "gets along with others" can be coached and can self-coach because they have the ability to place the other above themselves. They can assert when needed and can accommodate when needed. Ironic humor relates to this too.

    Very rarely do I watch a 2 hour TH-cam video in a single evening but this was great. I’ve been binge watching your erg rowing videos as this is my new avenue of fitness since Covid hit, resulting in my Jiu Jitsu training being put on hold. I also just happen to have started carnivore diet 9 days ago after much flip flopping about the idea. Cool coincidence that you happen to have Dr Shawn Baker on. Keep up the great work, I have not found a single channel with similar caliber of advise relating to rowing and fitness as yours.

      Thanks! I appreciate the comment and am glad to hear that you've been benefiting from the content. I've been planning to pick up Jiu Jitsu myself once this craziness abates based on the fact that so many of the individuals I listen to and respect speaking so highly of it. Congratulations on your dive into carnivore. A meat based diet wiped out every chronic health issue I was dealing with 2 years ago (and the extra 45 lbs I was carrying around was a nice bonus). Everybody responds to the adaptation period differently so be patient and read as many personal accounts as possible to get ideas for your own transition. Good luck!!

    Immensely interesting conversation, Bruce’s insights into the rowing industry is fascinating as a former college rower (who’s been interested in picking up a rower). I generally feel that the single biggest barrier to rowing is just cost to entry, as well as the indoor experience is generally brutal. The biggest reason why I’ve never bought a rowing machine was because of the PTSD I have from indoor rowing as part of a college team (not literally). Really excited to own a Hydrow one day, it’s a bit more expensive than I’d like, but definitely hope to save up for it. Thanks so much for all your thoughts - amazing conversation.

    • @rowingresource
      @rowingresource 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're very welcome! Thanks for listening and for the feedback! Your impression of the indoor rower is all too common in this sport - a sad consequence of reckless and shortsighted coaching practices. Hopefully those memories will fade in time. I recommend just flipping the monitor up, rowing how you feel, and using it the same way you would if you were just going for a run (i.e. just go out and enjoy the activity, no need to be doing intervals or even hard aerobic miles with any regularity).
