Yeas he jast need go back to clasical performences of it by great violinist in the past. And jast copy.As his interpretation does not conserve traditions. Is like leftis agresion on tradition values.
Showing off is not a virtue. Yes, it can be good, very good at times. But I, in my personal opinion, find lacking a deeper, more meaningful character. I do not feel inspired.
Paganiniana, to me, is a show piece open to improvisation and interpretation. I enjoyed Ray's performance and hope to hear it live next time I go to his concerts.
Kurganov's critique reveals more about the ossified dogmas of classical music criticism than it does about Chen's performance. To demand perfection is to misunderstand the very essence of artistic expression - music is not a mathematical equation to be solved, but a living, breathing dialogue between performer and audience. Yes, Milstein represents a pinnacle of technical mastery. But art is not a museum piece to be preserved under glass, nor is it a competition of mechanical precision. Each performance is a momentary alchemy - part skill, part emotion, part pure chance. The "random interpretive decisions" Kurganov decries are precisely what transmute technical competence into something transcendent. To dismiss a performance because it does not meet some - imagined or otherwise - platonic ideal is to commit a cardinal sin against art itself: mistaking the map for the territory, the sheet music for the music. Chen, like all great artists, inhabits a dangerous and beautiful space between technical mastery and raw emotional truth. Not every note will be perfect. Not every moment will be sublime. But perfection is the enemy of greatness. If you seek only flawlessness, might I suggest a metronome?
@@nirwana911 Or... Ray has become on the lazy side in terms of practicing and is more interested in social media than artistic interpretations. Just a possibility.
Absolutely agree
@@anlingitalia😂 are you a world class soloist to tell us that a world class soloist is bad and lazy, can you even play like him 😂
@Violin-Villain dude. What do you think? Have you heard me play? I am the "idiot violinist". BUT I didn't make 10 million dollars from performing as a soloist. You don't have to be a world class violinist to hear the differences between world class violinist. I like Ray just as much as the next person. Just saying he might be slacking compared to some of his peers
@anlingitalia idiotic comment, do you know how hard it is being a world class soloist?, are you one?
Is he playing on the Dolphin Strad ? With Dynamo strings ?
No. Here is his second main violin (which was before the dolphin)
13:41 2nd movement 21:55 3rd movement
used to love him. still a great violinist, but hes become more of an internet celebrity now. this performance was really messy and unclear compared to other performances, maybe not his best day but yeah.
Amazing! Love it! So full of character, expression, and individually.
Don't forget , this is not a studio equipment, just iphone.
I genuinely think people who regard this performance as really bad or sloppy are out of their mind or don't really play the violin. this is still far better than what 99.999% of violinists can achieve in a random live performance, it has some (small) flaws and technical mishaps, but still, if you think this is bad from a purely technical standpoint you are either 1) out of reality or 2) definitely have never touched a violin and base your opinion on pitch perfect studio recordings. then, if we wanna talk about how he presents himself on stage, I agree that it might be a bit too "raw" and messy, I personally dislike the banging and random glisses all over, but still this is a godly technical level that so few violinists will ever achieve it's incredible
his technique is nowhere near his peak in 2017. give it up, hes an internet celebrity rather than a violinist that purely focuses on concerts and performances now.
True
Milstein….
😲 wow
Wow, I never saw Ray Chen playing like that and it's incredible to see him using his true power! Brett and Eddy would have their jaws dropped on the floor by listening and watching this lol Edit: I will always defend Ray for what he plays and for what he does to the community. I loved it! The violin is sounding amazing to me. Oh, and I wish I could play the Witch's Dance part like that! (1:07 - 1:49)
John Williams 🎼🎶🎶 曠世巨作 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
To be honest with you it is the first piece I have heard Ray play that I have NOT enjoyed as much as all the others I have heard him perform. I enjoyed Chloe Chua's interpretation of this piece FAR MORE when I heard her perform it on TwoSet. Julie Gill, Glasgow, Scotland.
If this was part of his programm that evening, I would say this is kind of disappointing. But this is an encore. He played a whole concert before. It deserves some respect I think.
He is great in that he is practicing this concerto with his soul. ❤
Messy, exaggerated and brutal, trying to hide the violinistic deficiencies. Noble Milstein turned in his grave and did not comment. I could not refrain.
I think it's a great performance. I think he has reached a high level at the moment and I hope he stays for a long time.
Hamburg 12\9 ok did bro played this in future
@Tjpark0402 I'm not sure if your being serious or not, but the American date system is not the only system in the world. It says Hamburg, not hamburger. It is in europe, if you didn't know. And they use the day, month, year system. Which is mathematically the best version.
@@onemeeliondollars so it’s 9/12/24nin American date?
Hm. Don't like it. It sounds a bit messy. Listen to Himari's Paganiniana for instance.
I'm a Japanese fan of Himari too, but I hate fans like you. Stop making enemies.
@@tako3038 Hateful response. I give my honest opinion. This interpretation of Ray Chen is not very good, that is what I am telling. Himari's is better and there are others that are better too. Grow up.
@@jansnauwaert1785 How do you think his fans will feel about himari after seeing that? When fans fight, the performers suffer. This is the same in any field. You are not a fan, you are just using himari to boost your ego.
@@jansnauwaert1785 Himari must be annoyed to have a fan like you.
@@tako3038 Another hateful answer. I will just ignore you, you really are not worth my time.
Personally i would’ve loved if he played 6 much slower, something about 6 being played slow is heaven to my ears
I cried when I listened to him play at his concert. So beautiful😢
I would be surprised if that recording was authorized by the orchestra and the soloist.
There's something lacking in the presentation. You can see and sense the effort.
Io non capisco tutte le critiche... A suonarci come lui! Anche solo come in questo video.
Amazing!👍👍👍
this is embarassing
Lol, funny seeing you here Gabe
He's an amazing player. I just wish he could express himself without dramatically changing the tempo all of the time. It seems he has gone from "taking a bit of time" to rewriting the music.
Ray Chen definitely has good technique. However, to me, his performances generally lack sincerity and feel too aggressive, with too much showmanship. I’ve never been able to make it to the end of any of his performances.
Really enjoyed the interpretation: rock star like stage presence and charisma which is refreshing but I miss the refinement and dazzling precision of Milstein’s version. Milstein had a rich, thrilling resonant tone on even the most difficult passages of this piece, perfect intonation and cleanliness of passsge work which actually made it sound more virtuosic and draw-dropping. Chen, despite being a great violinist, musician and performer failed to do this in this performance imo.
Great performance!!! You have perfected your craft through the years. BRAVO!!!
I'm sure Milstein would like it. Just remember what Milstein said about inventions...Paganiniana itself is about inventions, so I don't know what anyone is talking about here. 🤣
Paganini would have loved it.
🎉🎉🎉 a la vida..!!! Muy talentoso
Thank you for posting. I was so disappointed that I couldn’t make it to this concert. Ray Chen and Mendelssohn and the Elbphi… the perfect combination for my taste. Therefore I really enjoyed your video. I’m so grateful!
I feel like he’s mocking it 😢
I love the violinist Ray Chen, he leaves his heart in every note... excellent, thank you for sharing this musical beauty... greetings from South America.🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Guys, it wasn't his best day 😅
This morons crying in the comments😂😂😂😂😂 fuck your opinion, becasue you talking a shit. Like bro this is one of the best recordings of this piece 💀💀💀 shit trying talking bad about dude like Ray😮
(Ray Chen 陈锐 | Milstein 帕格尼尼阿纳 Paganiniana | Ray chen & HKPhil 返场曲目 超精彩的encore), (--try to copy-paste this in google) This would lead to a bilibili video of him playing this piece a year ago. I suggest you try looking into it : ). I don't comment as much in TH-cam, but I hope Ray gets improve his technical flaws, because it disheartens me to see one of my favorite violinists slowly downgrade in technique.
I took a listen to it. These two performances aren’t that different, esp regarding techniques. In fact this recent performance is better in some areas. Just not a fan of the way plays this piece should be the right thing to say
I love ray chen, everything about his playing, I even emulate his playing in mine, but I feel like he needs to find a balance to what is too aggressive and what isnt like I have. Back in 2017 I would say is his peak, because he had that balance and played super perfect, not a technique machine like heifetz or hilary hahn but still amazing. 2022 his playing took a deep turn, which I didn’t mind then but it kept getting worse up until, this. I do like this recording but I do understand it is a bit too much and when I listened to it for the first time I cringed at certain bits, but I still enjoy listening to this, and I can comfortably say this is my favorite recording (besides that 3 minute clip of ray playing it like 12 years ago).

@@ClaimTheSpaceDude people should watch your yt because it highlights ray chen at his besy nglll
7:20, 6:25 Welp that's too hard to watch
Amazing Ray!
so good
Every body in comments feels the police of good taste and speak like they were Heifetz😂 Let people live their lives and play violin as they want ,this is not medicine nobody is gonna die if you take a different approach
Amen 😂😭
Call everything tase and interpretation, but what about him not playing the section with double stops right after the 24 caprice intro? If you don't know what I mean, listen to the original piece and youll see how he intentionally threw away that section. You call that good taste? Wake up
@@JAEYONGKIM-sp9xh Milstein himself also intentionally skips the second or third variation in some performances 🙂
@@jacksauvage Again, he has proven himself that he can play all sections with mastery. This isn't the same thing. Does the original score ever say you can skip 2nd or 3rd variation depending on how you feel? or how prepared you are?
@@JAEYONGKIM-sp9xhDude literally what the guy just siad is that he skips it because milstein does not because he just cant play it💀
Monsieur you clearly are not a very good player but a very good head banger!🎉
@@Joshs8707 thank you 😊
Practice your intonation sir, half of the notes were slurred through, the phrasings awkward, discreet and not flowing at all. The octaves are even less bearable in the second half.
Thank you! I will try to be better)
@ruslan In the spirit of taking your comeback seriously, I went on to watch some of the videos of your performing, it turns out you are very average musician and no surprise that you would defend Ray Chen.
@Joshs8707 Yeah so post a video of you playing paganiniana if your so much better than everyone else
Stupid quote.... Sure youre not even violinist and youre here evaluating a profesional with so much disrespect. What is for you average? Top 5% violinist in de world?? I saw couple videos and I can asure You his level is preeeetttty high. You would be surprised if you ask the violins of your local orchestra to play paganini 17, the result will be most likely muuuuch worst. If you want to compare every violinist with the top 0.0000001 in the world, the best 200 violinist out there ok, do It but from my point of view his opinión (or Mr Kurganov even It is the opposite) means much more than any of your disrespectfull words.
@Joshs8707 thanks for checking my skills) Yes, my technique and sound production not so good, but you don't have to be a chef to appreciate the food in a restaurant. And you are a shining example of this.)
@@benjers-2187 Why would I bother to prove anything to you when you play Tarantella like that? Where's your intonation mister? It's like asking Bill Gates to prove he's not poor.
@@JoseJimenez-tc6ijRay Chen's good but doesn't implly he's good in his comparable league of the same skill level. Your take fails to follow basic logic. And I play the violin since 8, and I'm now 21, where did you even get that I don't play?Hilarious.
This is disgraceful and kind of sad, most importantly, I can’t believe it’s played a world-class violinist
Pls let us hear how you play, ego is a person's greatest enemy and I'm speaking from experience so BE HUMBLE
