Mapping St Croix Legend Tournament Rods to Physyx Rods using Fish Point Media Reviews.
I would love to see St Croix add a Physyx version of the 6' 10" ml/mf MOJO Trigon 🤞
Sounds like a great power and action. What do you like to use it for? I'm guessing jerkbaits. Your thoughts?
I have it paired to a Daiwa SV TW 70 with 7 lb Daiwa J - Fluoro Samurai Hidden and have been using it for finesse crankbaits. It seems really happy in the 1/4 - 3/8oz range. *Megabass Super-Z Z1, Z2 and Z3 Megabass IXI Shad 6th Sense Crush Mini 25X 6th Sense Curve Finesse Bill Lewis ATV 1.0
@@xDx0xUxGx So, cranking is a tip-down technique. If you want to move up in a rod that will cast your light cranks. I suggest the LBTC72MM. It is a carbon-glass hybrid that will cast 1/4 baits. The glass really slows down the rod response when a fish is hooked. That is very helpful with small treble hooks. Below is my review of that rod. If you like the Physys handle then try the PHX72MM. Same blank and action. Next, I have no intention of moving you away from Diawa, but I now think the Lew's Custom Pro Gen 3 is one of the best reels on the market for throwing light baits and managing backlash. As of today, it is as good as a Matanium DC in my book. I need more time with the reel to get a sense of the drag and longgivity. Here is the link to the rod review: th-cam.com/video/bKFAJWJFQhM/w-d-xo.html
I have the Rip n Chatter and the Drop Shot Finesse XL in Legend Tournament. I will likely be getting the Custom Pro to pair with the 6' 11" m+/f Poison Adrena that I ordered from Tackle Warehouse. They have them discounted due to the new model's release and an additional 20% off for their Black November sale. I couldn't pass up a Poison Adrena for the same price as an Expride.
I also think the Physyx line would be a place to add a few "BFS" models. A 6' 8" - 7' light/moderate and a 6' 8" - 7' light/extra fast would be fantastic. *somewhere around 1/16 - 3/8oz
Can you summarize a layman's version of what a solid tip is and whether or not there are any durability concerns? In my mind, it's a solid piece glued or wrapped onto the end of the rod.
I wish I could be of more help with your question. I don't have knowledge or experience with stinger tip rods. I have heard that early models of various manufactures did have the problem you mentioned. They has supposedly make them better.
Thanks for the great tips! Love the gear breakdown.
I am always glad to help with gear selection!
Nice review !! The balance must be measured with the reel on it.
Not for the purposes of this video. I was showing how the Physys is balanced differently than the LT. But if you want to know the true balance when using it, I agree 100%. And each reel will be different.
Unable to find spool weight listed on multiple searches. Can you weigh your spool in grams ?
Why is spool weight important to you?
Spool weight has been an important factor in 18gram distance casting competitions. The long favored (and record holding) reel is the discontinued Abu 2500 with an aftermarket (Avail) 6 gram spool.
The metanium DC is $345 on Digitaka and the Trika is 319 one reel is Japanese made, and we all know Japanese quality the other reel we don’t know where it is made except overseas they stated they tested it against the competitors which competitors only way this reel is gonna prove itself. It’s gonna have to be tested by fisherman. I know they give a one year return policy on their product. But that’s all I know about it at this time let us know how you like casting it and how it feels in hand I could tell you this you’re gonna love that metanium dc and I hope you catch a lunker on it I look forward to your next review
Is that the 2024 Metanium DC or the older version on sale? Curious. I plan on a follow-up review of the Trika after using it to catch fish and win a tournament. I have some early thoughts on the reel.
Joe is a great guy and master angler. I got to fish with him at Barlett this month. What a treat for me.
It was a pleasure fishing with you as well! Let's install more habitat!
AZ can be different for sure. Your info is always spot on! Thanks Joe
Where are the reels and rods made? What country? Seem that nobody ever mentions where they are made. It's a big deal.
They are both made here in the US
Thanks Joe, Drops hot is the way to go for me. I have used the hover rig for suspended fish and get a nice glide with it. Almost like a tube.
I think the tube is a classic hover bait, that still works. The minnows look more lifelike, but I'm not sure fish care. I too am back to using drop-shot more, only because light hover baits are so light, they take forever to get deep. I'm trying another technique that is very close to a hover-stroll and I can add weight and get it deeper. More on that in the future, as I perfect the usage.
Joe, very glad I found your channel. The waters here in KY certainly are not as clear as the water you showed. But, your techniques should work well here. Also, thank you for the hook explanation. really enjoyed tour entire presentation. enjoyable.
It will work in any shallow water. I would use darker colors in darker water. You likely already know that! Thank you for the feedback. I have hit upon how to structure a video because if feedback like yours.
Great video! I used this technique today and caught 2.
Where are you fishing?
I fish in Western Washington. About 40 miles north of Seattle.
It is SO RARE to get any thorough instruction on fishing TH-cams - mostly just casting, maybe a glimpse of the lure…thanks much, Joe!
Thank you! I'm closing on the best formula for a "fishing" video. Some fishing, some discussion on the water and then talking baits, and rods and reels. I will be doing more of these styles along with more product review in the near future.
Always love learning more about bass fishing. Thank you sir.
More to come!
New Subscriber, from Sun City West. Great explanations. I am actually a snowbird from Tennessee. I fish all the time in TN but have yet to wet a line here in AZ. Good luck on hitting 1000. Live Free! <==Love that!
Thank you for subscribing! Do you like to fish club tournaments? Our club is looking for new members.
Joe, this is the first time I’ve watched one of your videos, it was very interesting and I love how you explain things. I love Texas rigging soft plastics, but I’ve never tried this and will do it soon! I like how you started with explaining the hooks, the bait and you went to the rod, reel and lines and the techniques on how to fish it, you explained everything very well! I’ve already shared your video with one of my buddies! I’ll be watching more of you, thank you, Jim
WOW! Thank you for sharing the video. It is appreciated as I try to grow the channel.
I use this technique quite often but I actually prefer the Fat Senko and sometimes I stick a 1/32 nail weight in there if I want to speed up the fall.
Do you use the Mustad hook or a plain hook with the added weight?
The lake water you have in Arizona is absolutely beautiful. The water clarity reminds me of the freshwater springs of northern Florida. I discovered this finesse Senko technique several years ago while fishing for spawning bass in cold, muddy Lake Eufaula, Alabama. I was using braided line. Casting the Senko up into inches of water, only to see a big wake engulf the bait. I did not know you are able to change the position of the weight on the hook shank. I will experiment with the weight position. In red muddy water, I was using black, black and blue and Junebug. The line was 65 pound test. The rod is a St. Croix legend series also.
Red muddy water, that is a color we never see in AZ waters. We do get muddy water, with less than 6" visibility during heavy winter rains is some of our lakes. It is either a brown or blackish color.
Which hooks are those. I don’t see any online with that clip in the middle of the weight.
They are Mustad Power Lock Plus Spring Keeper Weighted or Mustad Power Lock Plus Weighted EWG Hook. On the latter I remove the peg and added an Owner twist lock.
Try the Ozark rig instead of the weighted swimbait/EWG hook. It works great!!
I seen those, but I don't it they would give me the same action. Perhaps it will give me better action.
It makes them fall really flat without having to move the weight. They aslo come through cover easier. The weight doesn't get hung up or covered in grass as much.
Shhhh Mr Joe. Your definitely letting the cat out of the bag on this technique. I can't believe how clear your water is out there.
I know. I've given other great techniques and most people don't try them. But then I'm not KVD.
Thanks Joe, for all the good tips !
You're welcome!
Remember, when you fish this technique, you have to fish it on the slack line to get the gliding action that catches fish. That means you need to learn the pressure bite to know when you have a fish on your line.
Joe, wow. This was a real eye opener for me. Can’t wait to try this. Making an order for tackle warehouse now.
It is a great technique.
Thank you Joe for giving us rookies a clear explanation of not only how to rig baits, but also where to throw them.
You're welcome. You know, joining a bass club is how to learn fast.
Does it say where the it's made? China? Korea?
It doesn't say on the box. I haven't looked on their website.
@@FishPoint-WithJoeMichels Thanks. They don't say on their website either.
I was informed by Trika that they we’re made overseas my guess would be Korea, maybe by DOYO or BANAX they wouldn’t say I ordered one if it’s made in Korea it should be stamped on the reel seat on the inner plate on the right hand side of the gearbox but for $319 now you’re getting into Daiwa zillion country and Shimano metanium country I ordered one if I see made in China, it’s going back
This is a Bates Hundo... google it.
@@MONGO573both their rods and reels are made here in the USA. I believe they get assembled in Houston Texas. The rod blanks are made in Washington and reel seats in Milwaukee.
Excellent video. Good explanations. Would like a close up of minnow baits
When I learn more about using minnows in AZ waters, I'll share what I've learned.
Do you take them off their beds for weigh in?
Yes, as do all tournament anglers during spawn, whether you see the beds or not.
I really appreciate you putting this out I’ve been trying to find any kind of review on this reel. So thank you
I hope to have a more detailed review coming soon.
Fiberglass only is a must for chatterbaits, do NOT use one for a buzzbait tho..
Please explain further on both your assertions.
Joe these action packed and informational videos are what keep me coming back! Could you go over your tactics to pick out patches of cover that hold fish? Here in new mexico there’s a lot of submerged timber but not always fish on them in certain areas could you tell us what you look for in patches of wood that tell you there’s fish in the area?
I have recorded a short video to answer your question. Be on the look out for the answer.
What is your best knot for buzzbaits
For fluorocarbon I tie the Double San Diego Jam Knot for when I use braid I use the Fish N Fool Knot.
Another great video👍
Please do a comparison between this and metanium with light top water and jerk baits thank you!
Funny, that is what I actually want to do for myself.
Thanks for your videos, Joe. One of the Midweek members and I plan to get out to Saguaro tomorrow morning before the heat. Wish us luck.
Good luck. I hope you catch a giant.
Nice smallie, Joe. I caught a 3.47 smallmouth on topwater in that tournament. Buck and I finished 11th.
Smallmouth are showing up at Roosy, that is fantastic for AZ anglers.
I keep getting Trika ads so definitely looking forward to your review!
Soon to come.
What color Senko?
This new video answers your question plus much more.
Nice 🤤
Great time with you Joe just like back in the early 90’s
More fun to come I hope.
I stopped fishing tournaments years ago too much drama and stress and the occasional cheating it's more relaxing when you don't have to worry about a bag limit.
Most anglers are in your category. Just enjoying the outdoors and fishing. I enjoy the friendly competition. I have made dozens of friends through the years by fishing bass clubs. I wouldn't ever give that up.
I'm new to bass fishing here in Arizona and i really like your videos and i appreciate your tutorials , i don't have a boat but i do have a kayak I'm 69 years old and fighting cancer but you inspire me to keep on fishing thank you
I'm glad you like the videos. It is good you can get on the water with a kayak. But did you know you can join the Midweek Bass Anglers of AZ and fish as a co-angler? Lastly, get well!
Thx Joe love the QandA
More to come! As long as I get questions.
I wosh this rod came in a 2 piece. Im on a search for a 2 pc jerkbait rod.
Thanks for the great response! Certainly ironed out any hesitations I had. Really appreciate it. And you’ll definitely have to pull a jitterbug out again for old time’s sake, I love them for fishing really calm water at dusk.
Great review!
Hey Joe, i was wondering if this would be good in the Saint clair river in michigan, the current is extremely i need a jigging and swim bait rod, ty
Hmm... I would want to know how heavy of baits you want to throw. This is a heavy power rod with an extra fast tip. I don't like it for baits that weight less than 3/8oz unless I'm pitching. Becuase it doesn't cast light baits very well. So if you are throwing 1/2oz jigs, then it is a possibility. I'm not sure about the extra fast tip when keeping fish pegged with 1/2oz or bigger jig heads. That will be your preference. I might suggest their LBTC73MHF Workhorse model if you are throwing 3/8oz baits in open water situations. I have not done a review on that rod and I need to soon.
The st clair river has an extremely strong current and I use 3/4 ounce jigs. I cast up river and bounce it along the bottom with the current. Thank you
@@jessedeen6569 In that case I might suggest the 74HF rod. I use that for fishing heavy jigs. I like the fast action vs the extra-fast for when I have a fish on a heavy jig. It doesn't react as fast and I think that helps keep fish pinned better. I have a friend who is sponsored by St Croix who uses that model in the Legend Extreme. If you fish that jig technique more than others, then spending the money on the Extreme might provide better return on your investment. Which all the said, the Power Finesse rod will easily handle a 3/4oz jig. St Croix has a 30 day no questions return policy, so maybe try both and return one.
Hey Joe, thanks for this series. Glad somebody decided to go into detail on this line of rods. Question for you: I’m looking at getting the Flip-Chat-Crank rod (7’3” Heavy Moderate Fast) as a do-it-all rod for the kind of fishing I do in my area. The lake I fish is very grassy, so I mostly fish senkos, swim jigs, and frogs, but I also want the rod the have a more moderate action because I fish large jitterbugs too in the open water. This coming year I am also planning to get into punching the weed mats. So my question is: would that make a good “do it all” rod for the fishing I’m doing? My theory is it would have good backbone for the jigs/punching/frogs, but the slightly slower action would be good for casting the weightless senkos and fighting fish on the treble hooks of the jitterbug. Thanks in advance for your help.
Hi, this is a great question. I want to answer this and I will do a short video to answer. Can you wait a day or two for my thoughts?
Sure, sounds good. Thanks!
great video Joe! Can’t wait until you start selling merch. How often do you find yourself leaning more towards livescope and minnow shaking compared to throwing the classics like a drop shot?
Hi, this is a great question. I want to give you an answer with a short video.
Have you had issues loading the boat on the trailer? I’ve heard that as a Caracal SP complaint.
I concur that loading a Caracal SP is a challenge. I've had bass boats since 1986, and this is the hardest to align on the trailer. I have learned to keep the back tire fender about 2" above the water to give it the proper bow height when pushing the boat to the winch stop. But aligning the boat with a slight crosswind is still challenging. What I do is get the boat between the fenders, as you would expect. If I'm crooked, then I work to realign with the motor. Back-and-forth, back-and-forth until I get it right. Then, the last thing I learned is that the point of the bow needs to look off-center for it to be actually centered before I power on the last 10 inches. Writing here, I wish I could say if it looks center to the port or starboard, but I can't. I just know when I'm aligned. BUT... even with all that, sometimes the bow veers to the starboard, and I have to use the motor to pull it off and realign. I know what I'm doing, yet I still have troubles. That is just how it is.
