Uncharted Japan
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 28 ก.พ. 2024
We're John and Josephine, and among Japan travel bloggers we have a unique background. Josephine was born and raised in Japan. Her father, grandfather and great grandfather were all born in Japan. Her great great grandparents arrived in Japan as missionaries on November 21, 1861 just as Japan opened to the west. It was a dangerous and chaotic time as the Shogunate was losing power to the Emperor. The family still owns a house north of Nagano which we visit often.
We started Uncharted Japan (with zero video editing experience) to assist others in their trip planning with a focus on the lesser known parts of Japan. The majority of visitors stick to Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto. In doing so, they're missing out on so much more, while at the same time being herded around like cattle at the popular tourist spots. We are here to help you get the most out of your trip, and the feedback to date has been very positive. Please subscribe and visit our website for posts on our travels.

You Must Visit This Edo Wonderland in Japan!
For a most unusual, one of a kind experience in Japan, visit the Edo Wonderland just outside Nikko. This is a 122 acre theme park replicating an Edo Period village including a Ninja Village, Samurai Village, Crafstman Village, Artisan Village and historic Post Town. It is a very authentically recreated park with staff dressed in period costume, and you can too! Rent a kimono or yukata and stroll the streets of old Edo (Tokyo) like the shogun of the town. It’s a very well done experience and fun for the whole family.
We are John and Josephine founders of Uncharted Japan. With 163 years of family history in Japan, we take you to the places most tourists never see. Visit us online and send us an email with your questions or ideas.

You find the most amazing foods
Amazing food is easy to find in Japan!
Reminds me of the kite festival on beech mtn 👍
Yes it does! Good memories up on the mountain!
finally another channel that speaks! I don't have the patience for those with only subtitles. they feel like a commercial 😅
Me too! Thanks for the comment and watching. We're still learning our way through YT, and we find seeing and hearing the people behind the video more engaging. Hope you'll check out our others. We have a 163-year family history in Japan yet we're not Japanese, so our perspective is somewhat different than most.
Interesting but your video shows me all I need. The museum did look to be 1st class, though
Yes, not everything is to everyone's tastes, but good to have visited at least once. Some people rave about it.
No word of the day?
Not today, but next time perhaps? Thanks for watching.
The best soba was under the train station!
Ah yes! You refer to Miyota in the Yaesu underground mall at Tokyo Station. Loved the hot soba with bonita flakes! Great memories from 2019!
There seems to be something new and interesting wherever one travels in Japan.
Yes, there certainly is. That's part of the fun.....discovering the lesser known parts.
It’s wonderful that even experienced Japan visitors like you can continue to discover fascinating places to explore. What a country!
Appreciate you watching, and yes, we'll never see it all. Izushi was a real surprise. So many amazing places tucked away. I often tell folks they can't but help have a great time in Japan regardless of where they end up. Discovering these places is largely what makes our work of Uncharted Japan so special.
Absolutely stunning artwork!
Yes, it is an amazing museum. One of the most enjoyable in all our visits to Japan.
For one who appreciates fine art, this is a must see. And all in one place! Amazing!
Yes it is. Simply an amazing museum. Its like going through all the museums of Europe, but in one place. It was a great experience.
Hi, thanks for the video.! We've just visited this museum this month. It really was worth visiting!! We enjoyed exploring there and it took the whole day.
Thanks for watching! Yes, this one really surprised us. We didn't see it all as we had to get to another appointment but would like to return.
For an appreciation of this is a must see, and all in one place! WOW!
amazing thankyou so much will explore in november
Thanks for watching! You are in for a treat. You could easily spend the better part of the day at this one spot.
Hi from Australia. We are going to Japan in April 2025. Thanks for the videos.
I appreciate how you showed so many spots other channels ignore to focus on Kobe Beef instead. Seriously the best Kobe video ive seen on TH-cam! And you two have a great vibe.
Thank you so much for the kind words! This encourages us to continue. We're new to YT videos, hoping to make this a full time thing, so every view and subscriber is greatly appreciated. Glad you enjoyed the video. Was a fun one in a fun city!
Yes, we agree that it is easy to get around in Japan. This is a most enlightening and interesting video.
Glad you agree! Thought the video content would be helpful to others.
Wonderful video chocked full of interesting places to vist and amazing history!
Thanks for watching. Yes, lots to do in Yokohama!
Wish I could bring that bear ice cream to my grand children.😊😊
They'd love it I'm aure!
Excellent video (though i akways like some info on pubs and clubs) . Subscribed
Thanks for watching! I'd have responded sooner, but we just went through Hurricane Helene here in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Only just now got internet and it will likely go out again shortly. No electricity or water, but hanging in there. Can't upload videos now, but thank you for watching! Brightens my day!
The air cabin was super cool!
Yes it was, especially since it was air conditioned on a very hot day!
Wow, you were here again!! Thank you for introducing our hometown!
Yes, have visited the bridge twice. Its an amazing thing to see that most western visitors to Japan overlook. Appreciate you watching the video and hope you'll enjoy all the others!
Hey I enjoyed the video of Yokohama, as well! Mrs Moore often told us a story of Rev James Barrah, and great to know this is the church he has found.
Thank you for watching and glad to hear that Mrs. Moore shared their special history with the church there in Yokohama. I hope you will enjoy watching our other Yokohama video as well.
So many interesting and surprising places to visit in Japan. Love your videos!
Thanks for watching! Yes, Japan is full of surprises!
Wonderful video! I love those sand sculptures! 👍
Thanks for watching. The sand sculptures were incredible to see up close.
Amazing story
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Love the dog festival!!
It was a lot of fun. Dogs everywhere!
What a beautiful City!
Yes, it is a beautiful setting with so much to do packed into a small area. You almost don't even realize you're in Japan. Thanks for watching and spreading the news!
That is one yummy looking dessert!
You bet it was! Looking forward to enjoying another one on our return visit. Mojiko is a wonderfully unique town in all of Japan.
So many interesting cities to visit. Surprises everywhere!
These videos are awesome!
Thanks for watching and the comment! Glad you’re enjoying them. We’ll keep making more like our newest one that goes out Saturday.
thanks for making Japan seem more accessible!
Absolutely! We enjoy sharing its amazing places with others.!
the time the US did a war crime and the entire world is like "ok that's good, you won and defeated them"
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Very cool architecture!
Yep, looked like something Dr. Seuss or Willy Wonka would have devised. But equally amazing inside.
😁I had to laugh at "Trash talk is universal." Thanks for another look at how Japan is unique.
No language barrier here! Trash goes in; a fine powder and power come out. Pretty amazing place. Thanks for watching!
Great video, thanks for dhsring. And if you are in Osaka around Christmas time be sure and check out the decorative window displays at Hankyu department store. They are simply amazing.
Thanks for watching, and agreed! Stores such as Hankyu, Takashimaya, and Daimaru go all out with their Christmas decorations. Add to that the Winter Illuminations in the major cities around the stations, gardens and shopping districts, and that's one primary reason we love going in late November through December. They're simply mind blowing.
Another great video! Thanks for opening the world of Japan to me!
Now that its open, time to plan your trip! Thanks for watching and commenting!
We had only one full day in Kyoto - May 28, 2024-and it was quite challenging. Why? It rained crazy on this day, so it was difficult to be a tourist there. Looking back, I see that Kyoto Shimbun wrote breaking news with heavy rain warnings. Kyoto Institute of Technology International Center recommended to 𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐝 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐬, 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐬𝐢𝐳𝐞. The next day, we biked from Kyoto to Osaka, 75 km, partially along the river, and we saw what they meant by sudden rises in water levels and strong currents. So, it happened that I liked Osaka more than Kyoto :^)
We biked in Japan 2.5 months ago, including Shimanami Kaido Road. The bridges and views from them were breathtaking.
An amazing scene for sure crossing island to island and stopping along the way. Was in the plans for our trip through Shikoku this past spring, but didn't make it. We stuck to the eastern side of the island (and in a car!). Another excellent area for cycling is in Shinanomachi near Mt. Myoko and Lake Nojiri. I did that with our boys in 2018. We'll be doing a video on that area in the coming months. Thanks for sharing, watching and commenting.
@@UnchartedJapanTravel Thank you for the idea of biking in Shinanomachi near Mt. Myoko and Lake Nojiri. I will tell my son, who will definitely go to Japan for another bike trip. (This time we were crazy enough to bring our folding tandem and another bike from the US to Japan.)
You're welcome and good for you! First thing to do is google "Guest House LAMP" Lake Nojiri. They are an outfitter on the lake with an amazingly cool facility with cabins, yurts, outdoor foot baths, sauna, etc. They know all the best spots. We've done the ride around Lake Nojiri. Its only 12 miles, but beautiful with practically zero cars on the road. A cyclist's dream. Beyond that, he can ride up to Togakushi or Naena Falls, stopping for some gelato at the new gelato stand. Thanks again for watching!
You had me at Kitchen! Let's Feast!
Oh man, you'd absolutely LOVE this place! Its a foodie's paradise on steroids on caffeine. I doubt there's any place like it in the world. Thanks for watching and commenting.
WOW! So much to see and do. I like that all the cities have places where you can chill and just relax.
Yes, there IS so much to do in Osaka! So much that we are preparing a second video on the city.
Looks idyllic!
Its a simply amazing place unlike anywhere else we've found!
My legs get wobbly just looking at it!
Definitely not for those with a fear of heights! But lots of fun for those who don't fear heights!
It’s in my bucket list!
Tokyo is great, and you can still find pockets of the city away from all the crowds. Thanks for watching!
I Love you channel! Such great content for the armchair traveler and others!
We really appreciate the endorsement! Tell the TH-cam genie! We try hard to create good quality content that is enjoyable. Thanks for watching!
Wow! Truly beauty for ashes!
Yep, another amazing city! Thanks for watching!
Wherever I go, I love to view beautiful bridges of steel, stone, and wood. My Dad was a civil engineer who designed bridges (as well as ships during WWII, though I won’t mention this in Japan 😅).
Ha! All is well in that regard. Hope you can visit this bridge during your visit. Its an amazing engineering feat.
What a gift to discover such rich Japanese destinations away from the madding crowd. Thanks John and Josephine!
Kobe is makes for a great stop. All the sights are easy to reach as the town sits right between the mountains and the bay. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for introducing Kanazawa. I was born near Kanazawa Garden 70 years ago and have loved the city ever since. Kanazawa is a city where you can experience a mix of old and new. During World War 2 the city was fortunate not be bombed. so the old town remains. I think your You Tube video is amazing. Thanks to coming my town.
Thank you so much for your kind words. It warms my heart. Yes, we love Kanazawa. We first visited there in 2005 and it has been a favorite of ours ever since. So much history and preserved neighborhoods to explore. Thank you for watching and I hope you enjoy our other videos. Please tell others about our channel as we have just started and trying to grow. Thank you!
Really loved your video. I was in Japan this year, and really enjoyed watching your video because you added a lot of background information about the places I visited. Really awesome job!
Thank you so very much for watching and especially for commenting. Means a lot to us as we're just starting this channel. We love Japan and sharing our experiences there. Glad you enjoyed your visit there. Let us know of any places you'd like to see in a future video, and we appreciate you sharing the word as we try to grow the channel. Next up is Hiroshima!
Yet another relaxed and inviting city guide from the Uncharted Japan couple. You bring out what's unique about each destination, and you pack in a lot of information about sights, food, and accommodations. Looking forward to Part 2!
Thank you for watching! So glad you're enjoying the videos and learning about these unique places. Yokohama is a great alternative to Tokyo that many visitors overlook. So much that we couldn't fit it all in one video.
Love the ramen museum!
Yes, it is a fun place. Thanks for watching!
Wow! 11 floors, that is a lot to explore!
Yes it is! Full of shops and restaurants. We enjoy simply riding the escalators up and down. Its such a cool setting! Thanks for commenting!
I’m born and raised in Tokyo and have watched tons of Tokyo guides made by non-Japanese, but your content, presentation, and overall mood are the best. Please enjoy Japan, be safe and come back again.
Thank you so much for your kind words! Means a great deal to us and tells us we are doing something right. Until a few months ago, I had never used video editing software or posted anything on TH-cam, ever! We've learned a lot, but what we do know and love is all things Japanese! Josephine's unique family history provides us a deeper understanding of the culture. You can read her story on our website at www.unchartedjapan.net. Our goal is to improve the quality of video for future visitors to Japan so they have the most wonderful experience. Appreciate your comment and please share and spread the word with others so we can continue the channel! Thank you!
