From my perspective Guru Gurdev Nidar Singh Nihang is one of the Martial Art 'Greats'. Whereas most MA's run the risk of either evolving into choreography or sport he does his best, within the realms of safety, to retain the reality of combat against actual weapons capable of causing serious or fatal injuries. In much competition, such as Olympic fencing or HEMA competitions the swords are used in unrealistic ways, in the latter sometimes, as others have commented, as inadequate clubs. People take risks that would be impossible in actual combat and suffer hits because the winner is the one ahead on points at the end of the match. Where people try to stick to a MA approach they tend to use choreographed 'plays' and then try to transfer them to sparring, which tends to become more like competition. Guru Nidar Sing Nihang seems to use the key principles of his particular art most of which, I would argue, are or should be fundamental to all combat, from which to adapt to any attack by any opponent. His specificity and fine control is what assures safety. I also really appreciate his sense of humour and playfully compassionate approach to his students and all interested in his art. He is a great ambassador for Sikhs. Brilliant stuff.
