My name is Mike and I'm an overlander based out of Oregon. I explore the thousands of square miles of public lands and national forests in Oregon in my Jeep Wrangler Rubicon with my dog Scout. I'm passionate about exploring the backcountry and scouting new and exciting routes. My aim is to capture and share my explorations to inspire folks to venture out and explore the backcountry themselves.
I really enjoy the engagement this channel has provided and hope to see you out on the trail!

Cline Buttes - Off-Road Skill Building
มุมมอง 1.4K2 ปีที่แล้ว
On this episode I join my friends from the Salem Jeepers club for a day of wheeling at Cline Buttes. We left more competent in our off-road skills and with a better understanding of the capabilities of our rigs. Over the past few years I’ve gravitated towards the “wheeling” side of off-roading and I’m much more confident in my rig and willing to tackle some of the rougher roads I’ve encountered...

Just over the hill from my place! Right about where Arizona State did a research project on geothermal in between Diablo and the highway Dyke at Summer Lake reserve, beautiful drone footage I’m gonna guess Mavic?
Nice review. I like how you included a beautiful adventure with it. The Bouge RV has some really nice features!
Thank you! Really appreciate it!
Awesome! I haven't gotten one yet but will look into this option. Thanks for the review!
Right on!
Nice video, 98% of my trips are solo I like the solitude of being alone, but I do a trip now and then with the wife or a friend. That's a nice spot you got there, and great job on the BougeRv Portable Frig product review. Have a great week brother looking forward to the next one.👍
Hey there!Your content is fantastic! We have some car related items. Do you accept sponsored products?
Great video as always! Looking forward to more Eastern Oregon next week!
Thank you my friend!!
@@OverlandScout81 I thought about you when I was back visiting the area last week. The area on the south side of the Strawberry range is a pretty cool area if you've never been. You can either head east out of Seneca or north out of Prairie City and make the loop through Summit Prairie. Lots of good side roads to wander as well.
@@ElGuaposTruckFarm that area has been on my radar for awhile and plan to explore it soon. Appreciate the tip my friend!
Welcome back! Sweet video.
Thanks brother! We gotta catch up sometime!
That was a beautiful video; thank you for sharing! Your drone shots and and seeing Scout so happy was really relaxing. The refrigerator looks really nice, we have a Dometic which I'm not crazy about so this might be our next choice .. thank you so much for sharing and God bless!
I really appreciate your comments, Jen! Thank you! I just got back from another trip and the fridge is working out nicely! Happy trails my friend!
How do you balance enjoying yourself; but also filming everything? Work trips and play trips?
It’s a great creative outlet and I enjoy capturing the trips on video and sharing them. Every now and then I’ll do trips without filming though and those are usually short day trips. Appreciate the question my friend!
How do you keep our dogs away from snakes?
I generally walk the area around camp where I think the dogs will go and check for snakes or any other hazards. I’ll show that in a future video. Great question!
Avoid using preassure treated wood in contact with edible plants and veges. Poisonous!
Good to know!
Fun - I know that spot great views -there was a tall widow maker there that I opted to not camp in its fall radius
Smart to play it safe. I have a favorite spot in the Ochocos I revisit every now and then and one time discovered a tree had fallen right where I’ve setup camp before.
I love a good solo trip, but it can be fun with friends! Especially in the snow!!! 🙏🏻👍🏻
Definitely! I’m actually out on the trail right now with some of my favorite trail mates! Looking forward to some snow wheeling too!
@@OverlandScout81 I’m headed to Banff and Lake Louise with my wife. Just a little vacation/hiking trip. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@@offgridrecon Right on! That sounds like it’s going to be an epic trip! Are you headed up there right now? Safe travels my friend!
@@OverlandScout81 yep, got to Calgary last night, got 4 days here. Beautiful fall colors, enjoying it throughly. 👍🏻
@@offgridrecon Sounds amazing. Enjoy the trip my friend!
I love that spot at the start of the video. I took my kids on their first camping trip there and it will always be special to me. ❤ Another great video my friend.
Right on! It’s an amazing spot for a first camping trip!
Gorgeous views! Thanks for taking us along!
Thank you so much!
Solo trips are the core and roots of my overland journey. How many of you venture out on your own? Happy to partner with BougeRv as a supporter of the channel too!
Hey!
Love the video you're definitely doing it right Most overland Videos are pretty boring You're making me wanna go out there and do some of this stuff Thank you for sharing the video and thank you for your service.
Really appreciate your comment my friend! Once you get the bug it’s hard to get rid of!
I have been running the exact roads for 40 years....all of south east corner as beautiful as it is, I really hate to see it on utube.... you did a good job on the video though...Sorry
Oh Dude, you don't need to explain why carrying the extra fuel! Ya gotta be fool NOT to.
My Gf and I get taken out at capital reef 12 years ago. Flash flood took our suv down the canyon, lucky we made it out of the canyon right before it hit.
Wow, glad to hear you made it out!
Tore that Jeep up. I think I would have anxiety doing that trail unless I had a dedicated trail rig. A good Spotter is 100% key. Awesome video !
Thanks! My thoughts exactly my friend! Highly recommend getting a dedicated rig and definitely no rooftop tent. I’m glad I got to test the capabilities of my overland setup but that was a one time thing.
Nope
Thank you for your service! It’d be awesome to see you around. Maybe at some overland event or camp trip.
Thanks Kenia! I really appreciate it. Thinking I’m going to organize a meet up one of these days.
Really enjoyed the movie. This is an amazing part of Oregon. Can’t wait to explore this area more.
Thank you Stefan! It’s definitely worth putting on the list. I’ve been following your adventures on your channel. Very nice!
@@OverlandScout81 Thanks Mike. This means a lot. Your videos have definitely been an inspiration for us.
@@Bronc_Ridingthank you my friend. It means a lot as well!
Nice video that is well produced. Like anything, there is room for improvement so here is a suggestion that you may consider in the future: provide more explicit information … header or footer stating which day on the trip, location (lat/long), map of route, instead of waving at a mountain and saying “we’re headed over that” state what mountain it is (if it is identified), cardinal directions, etc. Information is a good thing and keeps the viewer engaged. By the way, that tall plant that spread lots of seeds when passing by is bull thistle. Based upon the fact that it was no longer flowering and that the rabbit brush was blooming, I would surmise that you and your friend were in the area in late summer/early fall.
Thanks Rick! Appreciate your comment and suggestions. We did the trip early August.
Nice, you’re making me miss it now! We just got back last week from doing Alvord Desert to Owyhee Lake. We ended up with 420 miles of amazing off road end the end😀
Right on! That’s a proper overland trip!
Looked like a great time. 🤙🏼
Thank you sir, it was an amazing trip. Unfortunately, looks like there’s an active fire in that area right now. I’m hoping it’s not too bad.
Great video Mike! Makes better understand the allure of overlanding. 👍👍
Thank you my friend!
Absolutely spectacular video; thank you for sharing, we really appreciate how you document the journey with beautiful footage and realistic portrayal; and thank you for your service and fighting for our freedoms!
Jen, I really appreciate your comment. It truly means the world to me. Sincerely, thank you!
WOW! Well done! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you my friend! Glad you enjoyed it!
Jackpot! Feature length video to start my day! Headed home to Eastern Oregon for a much needed visit in a few days, and once again your video makes me regret not doing more exploring while I still lived there. I really appreciate your videos and the fond memories they bring!
My friend, I really appreciate your comment! It’s comments like this that keep me going, thank you! Safe travels home and hope you have a great trip!
Great “movie”! This definitely has me salivating to explore that area of the country. It’s a loooooooong way from TX though. And good call exiting with the compounding problems piling up. Glad the root cause was identified.
Really appreciate your comment my friend! It’s a long way from Texas but would make a fantastic summer road trip. Hope you make it out this way someday!
I forgot how big Oregon is, especially when you're driving through on the regular highway. It seems so much bigger when you're driving through the way you guys are just wanted to tell you thank you for your experience it's very interesting to watch on this end
Thank you, sir. Much appreciated!
Time for the bull bar antenna up front. I had mine in the same location. Seemed like I was fixing it all the time. 😂😂😂
Ha! This is the first time I’ve had issues with it but you’re probably right!
Really enjoyed it, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it my friend!
Awesome video, beautiful country out there. Definitely on my list to explore! 🤙🏼
Thank you my friend! Definitely an amazing area to explore. Happy trails!
Awesome adventure Mike, I'm envious! I'm sorry, I missed you saying what type of drone you use. I never thought I would want one until you mentioned you scout the roads ahead with it. Take my money! haha Do you recall the brand and model name? I'm subscribed, see you on the next adventure!
Thanks my friend! Much appreciated! I have 3 drones all from DJI. I started with the Mini 2 and it was ok. The new Mini 3 is much better. It has 4k, I believe some obstacle avoidance (mini 2 did not), and handles wind better. I upgraded to the Air 2s and it’s a solid drone but the Air 3 is significantly better. It runs for over 40 minutes on one battery, handles wind great, is super fast, and has zoom. It was pricey though. Unless you really need the larger sensor and zoom I’d go with the Mini 3. It’s definitely a great tool to have out here and won’t break the bank. Thinking I might do a video about all my camera equipment. Happy trails my friend! Let me know if you have any other questions.
@@OverlandScout81 Thanks so much for the info. I'll research the Mini 3, that one sounds more my speed. I hope you decide to make the video outlining your equipment, that would be very useful. I'm often in the Owyhees, hope to see you on the trails someday!
@@BoiseG No problem my friend. I have a list of episode ideas and one of them is to outline the equipment I'm using; what's worked well and what hasn't and what I would like to invest in next. Hoping it can help folks on their content creating journey. It's such a healthy creative outlet.
Nice video beautiful area need to get out that way sometime and do some trips myself.👍😎
Thank you my friend! It’s an incredible place and definitely worth putting on the list. Great channel you have too! I subbed and will be following your adventures.
@@OverlandScout81 Thank you, I just sub to you as well. Looking forward to your next trip as we’re not to far apart.😎
@@godsbackcountryoverland right on my friend!
Absolutely Fabulous! Great narration. I really like your drone footage. Makes me want to be an Overland Scout with you!
It would be amazing if you could join one of these times!
I’m always in awe to realize just how vast Oregon truly is. This movie is incredible- especially the beautiful evening & night scenes.
Agree 100%! Glad you enjoyed it!
Steens Mountain Loop and the Alvord Desert are amazing locations in Oregon but how many of you have explored the surrounding area? Definitely worth venturing farther out!
what's on the end of that trail that makes all that vehicle damage and that excruciating slow pace worth it?
I’m an overlander and usually out exploring the backcountry. I never thought I would get into rock crawling like on the Rubicon but it was an incredible experience. Not going to lie, we took some damage but I would do it again for sure. The sense of accomplishment is palpable.
Great spot! Is that on private property or is it BLM land? I'd love to go visit that place. Do you have a GPS coordinate?
It’s on BLM and totally accessible if you can find it. It’s been awhile and I plan on going back for sure. I’m sure there are even better places in the Owyhees and the hunt makes finding these places that much better. Happy hunting my friend!
So dangerous a Subaru can do it.
Looks like zero fun.
My wife and I spent our vacation in the Oregon High Desert. Arguably, America's best kept secret. Oh, and your dog's fascination with your drone is TH-cam gold!!!
Agree, 100%. Central and Eastern Oregon are amazing places.
@OverlandScout81 lol, I said "vacation", but I meant "honeymoon". But "vacation" is appropriate too, as we've done many road trips out there. You should try looking for Oregon trail ruts and swales. Drones come in handy. Thanks for the content. Have a good day!
@@michaelberger8137 Ha! Sounds like a great honeymoon. I just got back from another trip and my wife was able to join in her Jeep. We're lucky guys to have ladies to share these adventures with. Happy trails my friend!
This is a really good video. Thank you for showing all those different lines. I’m going to be heading out to CO next week, and Black Bear is on my list this year.
Thanks my friend! Have a great trip!
What size wheels and tires do you have on your Rubicon.
I’m running 37 /12.5 / 17. My buddy in the white Jeep was running 40’s.
@@OverlandScout81 Thank You
I was thinking it doesn’t look that bad then he pans down to the 18°. That will tighten the ol’ sphincter. You can never have enough lights at night.
