I came across this video by chance, and I didn’t know that you could clean video tapes.
Hi, could you please expalin or show how to fit the Electronics Spare Parts Kit as it would be complicated i think.
@@CreeBreej I offer that for international customers so that if they have a part fail at some point they wouldn’t have to pay international shipping for a replacement part. I will offer support to customers during that time to assist in part swap.
Never knew tapes could mold; there goes MY VHS library…
They won't mold under normal conditions of being in a climate controlled house. Mold requires oxygen and excess humidity, being in a basement or storage unit for instance.
You just added mold to the cleaned tape on the first pass when you rolled them up taught and put it down. The clear tape did not pass through the alcohol pad.
You are correct that part should be cleaned as well. I was mainly focused on demonstrating the use of the machine. Thanks for pointing that out.
worked fine no problem thank you sir
Great to hear!
please ship to Australia in the future! or just to me? lol
I can ship to Australia. Send me a comment on my website contact form and we can figure out shipping costs.
I thought mold meant the end of the tapes
Depends on who you ask. Technically no, mold can be cleaned. But some people do not want to mess with it so if they see mold they toss it. The difference really comes into play for digitizing services that have to clean home video tape with irreplaceable memories on them, then it's not an option but to try and clean it. Rare tapes as well. It's the more common commercial stuff that people will just toss as opposed to try and clean.
Very cool. What's next, strawberry scented 8-track cartridges?
Possibly I love Strawberry!
Worked for a company in the 80's to 00's running machines that wound the videotape into the empty VHS shells, I remember all the various colors & designs we used, hate to think how many millions we produced over the years
That's cool! Would love to talk to you about that sometime. If you would be interested in that send me a message on my website contact form and I'll reach out.
I had a vhs tape that was completely white all mold.
Yep it’s amazing how bad some can get!
Got my unit today. It's great, I recommend! I've always fantasied about such a device and how useful it would be. But now it's reality and I couldn't be happier.
Thank you my friend!! Enjoy!
Thank you for helping save the tapes. You're doing a huge thing for the hobby and we appreciate you!
Thank you my friend!
I'll be trying out one of these on my next TH-cam video.
This looks great! One thing is that the reels don't stay still but move up and down. This can cause the tape can be double strikes and can be damaged.
They don't move up and down. I have stabilizing collars that make the reels/spools spin flat elimnating any wobble. I have 325 of these in the field now in 8 countries and not a single return or complaint for that issue. If you watch all my videos and follow my instructions the machine works flawless.
@@vhsislife Great! I might be interested too. I'll send you an email.

Do I need really an extra spindle for betamax?
Yes the betamax spindles are a different design than the vhs
Nice project. Isn't the spindle for vhs and beta the same? I removed a reel from an old vhs vcr and rewind it manually with this reel. It works fine.
VHS and Betamax have different spool hole designs and for the purpose of this machine require different spindles.
Im ready and on your list in purchasing your vhs cleaner.
Can you make a machine to clean ¾ inch U-matic tape?
So I'm already working on the Umatic-S tape which is the smaller umatic. The large U-matic will require a different footprint and design due to the spools being too large for my current machine as well as the fact one of the spools is inverted upside down so I have to develop a mechanism to keep the tape from falling when it's being cleaned. But...the short answer is "already in the works for the small Umatic" and "yes for the large umatic however it will most likely be next year as I am swamped right now".
@@vhsislifeThank you so much for your hard work! I'll definitely buy the U-matic cleaning machine (large cassette). I need it to clean some of my ¾ tapes. I subbed to your channel and will tell my friend about your project.
Very informative. Thank you.
Does the end that connects to the unit snap into the unit or just kind sit in it. Ty
It just sits there so that when the vacuum is turned on the suction holds it tight. But then if you want to move the hose around to clean up stuff that didn't get caught as it was running it's easy to do. If you haven't watched my video on the cleaner yet in full I show it in the setup portion.
@@vhsislife awesome. TY

When I try to buy this vhs tape cleaner on your site I get a message that the product is password protected and I should enter the password!!??? WTF!? WHY!?
Because as it states on the product description I have a backlog of these to build so you have to go on a waitlist. I personally build these and build 25-30 a week. This is awesome! Does it ship to Canada? Also what state is it shipping out of?
@@alecc4137 yes I ship to Canada. I’m in Florida.
@@vhsislife Awesome! Thanks for the ultra quick response and the good news :)
Why have the USA / Canada chosen cardboard VHS boxes? In Europe, we have sturdy plastic cases. 😁
Not sure...that decision was made 45 years ago when VHS was starting to be produced.
Probably because it was cheaper to produce. The irony is that there were a lot of video stores that ended up cutting up the boxes to fit into plastic sturdy cases.
@@DanielS2001 that makes sense… and true there has been many a sleeve ruined for that lol

The cleaner is $100 and the optional vacuum is $40. The betamax spindles are $10. Thats the prices as of the time of this comment.

@@vhsislife thanks I'm on your list.
Do you guys send overseas?
Yes I do!
Great idea! I use to do it with a worn head vhs player and a head cleaning tip, it automatically reduce increase speed depending the tape state. However it require you to be careful not to make tape going out of the head and must hold the head cleaning tips, in summary you're is much effortless method! Unfortunately cleaning vhs tape does not guarantee at all the full playback there is also a lubricant on it, and when it's gone, it's gone no matter how clean is the tape, i can see the loss of lubricant while cleaning the tape in the vhs player, when it stop at the cleaning process, you can be sure it won't play correctly! So it would be a good idea to replicate the vhs ff and rewind process with the same tracking force! Furthermore just some bad inch can affect the whole thing, like reel to reel or cassette! If eventually you pass this, then it come colour drop/lose, Hifi sound drop/lose... In fact as any tape, but more pronounced with vhs as the drum head speed is incredible we need new reissues and of course like for vinyl when possible from analog masters!!! People are just realising how it was important to revitalise home analog music, be still not realized how much more important is to revitalize home analog video whatever the advance of digital! Listening to vinyl/whatever analog sound support and watching analog content from whatever analog support with a true grid less trinitron hd CRT screen is like analog audio a unique engaging experience that digital will never be able to offer! And don't think your 8k 1000$caler on your 8k oled screen can do as good as the hd trinitron crt, same as analog content digital display will never offer the same quality as analog display for analog content! We loose one of the most important home experience, watching video as your eye are watching! (and don't bother me with numbers, despite lower available res, blocked by compagnies specially to promote digital, analog video is way more faithful to how our brain analyse true images)
Try dousing the pads with silicone lubricant spray and using this machine for another purpose LOL
@@wer123456 Tried silicone lub just only on moving part, but tend to stick tape even with few drop, with Cotton tips cleaning! Anything too wet will instantaneously block the tape! Did you have any success?
Just received mine cant wait to start using it
Update us, please!
You can add an optical sensor to turn off the motor when the clear leader is out so you don't have to wait for the end of the tape.
Already in the works for V2
@@vhsislifeIf you add the sensors, I will immediately order a unit. Depending in a manual control for both end of the tape is an inconvenient truth. I have a similar machine cleaner, with rollers at the center instead of fixed columns. It does the job pretty well. However, the absence of the lead guide sensors has been my main complaint.
Would you ever offer a service if people sending in tapes and charge per tape cleaning? As someone who only needs one clean, I don’t think I need a machine. Super cool though!
Thanks! I'm not going to be offering a cleaning service but several people who have purchased the machines are offering. I'll reach out to some that I know clean and have them contact you.
Great how do I order one ?
Go to the website (vhsislife.com) and send a message through the contact form to get on the wait list.
Looks a handy machine. What power does it run on? Forgive me if mentioned in the vid but skipped bits. I clean tapes using an old unused VCR with damaged heads but sometimes tape comes off the guides and gets chewed so this is a great alternative especially with the speed setting and ability to clean both sides at the same time on the final pass. I'd be interested in one if it can run on a uk volt power adaptor and shipped to the uk.
It will work with an adapter. I already have a customer in the UK using an adapter. If you want to get on the wait list go to the website and fill out the contact form. Thanks!
