Why Do You Collect Retro Video Games Or Other Collectibles?
Today I just wanted to talk about the topic of "why do you collect things?" A fellow creator discussed certain areas of this, and I was going to originally discuss just why I personally collect things. But I will briefly touch on why maybe some others collect and see if you happen to be collecting for those reasons. Let me know what your thoughts are on this in the comments below!

Awesome. Hard to pick out of those games!
Its pretty fun for not just us, but when the chat gets involved voting on where theyd put the games. This one was tough as we both picked a bunch of bangers, and had no real easy "low tiered" games.
@@GeeksOfRage1 Haha most of these are A and S Tier! I will watch to see see where it all lands. Cheers.
Thanks so much for having me I will end up watching this again tommorow!
Absolutely my man! Glad you took the time to hang out! When we plsy sor2 i wont be sick, so thatll be a plus!😆
Hardest game i beat as a kid holy man 😭
It is tough 100%!
The 90’s. Genesis is cool while nintendon’t Now Sega makes bad games while Nintendon’t
I love the genesis! I wish sega didnt drop the ball so hard prior to the saturn launch. Itd been cool to see how they would have possibly been in the 2000s had the dreamcast been a success.
The prices 😮💨
Ironically the prices techically cost more back then when you compare it to what people made. On the surface level its "cheaper", but when you think about minimum wage being $4.50ish its way more expensive. There were some snes games back then that were 60-70 dollars!
I got this game yesterday before it got delisted from the Xbox Store. I checked some reviews of this game and it looks like Sonic the Hedgehog but way more crazier. I'm looking forward into playing it.
It controls a little wonky for todays standards, but its still really fun!
why you collect is because if you are over 40 you are living your midlife crisis. I'm still going strong un stoppable and 50
Hahaha, im not quite 40 yet, but i dont think myself personally im goin through a crisis. Now, obviously i cant speak for everyone that does it. I find it to be just very relaxing being surrounded by everything i grew up on all the way up to present day. In a lot of ways due to some of the stories involved i can see the way i have evolved over the years. Again, i cant speak for others, maybe they are goin through a crisis 😅. Thanks for givin the vid a watch/comment, i appreciate it!🍻🤘
I collect old school games to play. Why? Because it makes me happy. If you’re not having fun, you’re doing something wrong.
Absolutely, you definitely need to be getting enjoyment from it 100%! Thanks for watching/commenting letting me know your perspective🤘
I collect because they are cool pieces of history that I can interact with.
That is a perk as well, and i enjoy using old stuff to revisit how controls used to be and realizing how far we progressed.
I collect to re-obtain games and music I grew up with, as well as to discover things I've never had the chance to experience.
Im similar to that as well. Overall, everything is what i want. I try to first and foremost get things i used to have. Then depending on the cost, its games i wanted to play or missed out on that i want to acquire before price spikes. Thanks for sharing your perspective my man 🤘🍻
There’s nothing wrong with it, but I think for most people, collecting is just the polite word for hoarding. And with physical media, you’re always still tethered to somebody. That’s a gatekeeper that can tell you whether you can or can’t play because consoles don’t last forever and physical cartridges and discs don’t last forever. I have all my games and consoles dating back to the late 80s and I literally only use emulation.
I cant argue that, as far as things do in fact degrade over time. I mainly worry about movies/tv shows getting erased by services that wont have them available over time. In theory if well kept they claim dvds/blurays SHOULD last between 80-100 years. So, as long as i have SOMETHING that can play em, thats all i want haha. I appreciate ya taking the time to watch/comment!🤘🍻
Today I buy games I definitely want to play. I have no interest in getting complete libraries. No hate to those who do. One day when I retire I’ll have plenty of games to keep me busy lol.
Damn right, thats where my mind goes as well! God willing as long as i dont get ol arthur in my thumbs and hands hahaha.😅
Great Video. I agree with your reason to collect. It's the same reason for me. It's a window into my past. It reminds me of happy memories of family, friends, and moments of my life. I have collected since day one. My father was a collector and still is. We talk about stuff on a daily basis. I have talked about why I collect on my channel many times.
Hell yeah, i love hearin back as to what others perspectives are and why they collect. The stories that tie into certain items are so good! As you said, its nice to sit, look around, and it takes you back to those great times you had. Thanks for watching/commenting, i do appreciate it!🤘🍻
I only ever collect retro games from thrift stores and flea markets. Ive found some gems over the years.
Hell, if i could i would do that. Ours caught on a long time ago and inflated prices. Thanks for givin the vid a watch, i appreciate it!🤘
I collect small retro handhelds like miyoo mini, funkey s, etc so that my childhood games and memories are always with me
There ya go, memories on the go!🤘
I collect for the PS5, but only the games I want to play. I collect physical exclusively for the PS5 and for no other console, mainly because of the expense. But also because it’s the only current console that doesn’t ever need to be online(launch disc ps5 Console). I really enjoy my library at this point, especially being able to play my ps4 games on it as well. I find myself missing my Xbox Elite 2 controller, but other than that I really like the PS5. Sometimes I think about selling it all and buying a SteamDeck. But then I remember that you’re just paying to access games on the steam service. You don’t even own a license of any kind. That’s lame, and I think ownership of the things you spend your hard earned money and time on should be something that belongs to you. Take care!
Thats good to hear, always just stay true to yourself when collecting. I agree with the steam statement. I have games on steam, but not too many. Thanks for taking the time to watch/comment, i do appreciate it!🤘
to have access to any game, at anytime. i platinum em, and switch around a lot, for whatever im in the mood for, I love and appreciate all types of gameplay, stories and experiences, but i do have favorites. like metroid prime trilogy or shadow of the colossus.
fk TH-cam censorship by the way
One thing I will say is that Sony were dropped very hard and abruptly by Nintendo, at a point that Sony were very far into the production of the accessory for Nintendo. Nintendo thought they were so big that nothing could stop them. Especially a company with no knowledge or history of making games. Then Sony makes the Playstation, an easier way to put memory onto the disk, way faster and cheaper to produce, the rest is history.
Oh yeah, i can see nintendo having huge egos in that regard for sure!
This has had me hooked to playing all my old games again. Absolutely love the idea. Makes giving yourself a new challenge that you wouldn't have done before fun to grind out.
Exactly, thats what has me drawn in! Love the challenge of getting em. I beat zombies ate my neighbors for the first time on a stream a couple weeks ago. Had it not been for the achievement hunting idk if i would have done it.
@@GeeksOfRage1 Dude I am replaying MGS1 as we speak and doing the hard boss challenges. It adds a total new layer to the enjoyment. (Gave you a subscribe! I am Keaks on RA also, not been active much, adult life etc. But I have the day off and I am going to get the cheevos!)
@Keaks_ thanks for that, i appreciate it! I totally get the adulting aspect for sure. Wife and i just had a baby a few months ago, so its tough to get time outside of when i stream.
@@GeeksOfRage1 Congratulations!
Original Sega CD was just going to be a $149 2x CD-ROM with 256KB of RAM. SoJ execs saw the $400 PC Engine CD and decided to outdo that, but ended uo with a $500+ albatross and had to cut costs. The CD ROM was replaced with a cheap audio laser that could barely manage 150KB/sec, resulting in grainy FMV and slow load times. All because they never once consulted SoA, a problem that would go on to kill the company.
That i didnt know, and is crazy! Sounds like there was miscommunication across the board. As the whole sega of america not listening to japan when the decided to release the 32x. Man, it pains me to know the mistakes that killed the company. They could have been a powerhouse if they were just patient.
I always enjoy a more organic approach to these discussions, great points and awesome room my dude. Museum of my life is the perfect analogy! Keep grinding!
Thanks my man for takin the time to watch the whole thing. I know i can be long winded at times haha. Yeah, the analogy kicked in when my nephews asked me, "why do you keep all thus old stuff?" Then i started picking random stuff up telling them stories behind it, and it clicked in my brain "this is like a museum of my life!" So when i look around im just immersed into constant nostalgia and memories, i love it!
@@GeeksOfRage1 Sounds like a great way to start videos dude. Welcome back everybody to the museum of my life!
@COIFISHGAMING hahaha, funny you mention that, as i thought about that myself. I just wasnt sure if people would actually wanna hear random stories like that. Maybe i will try it a few times and see what happens. Thanks for the feedback for real!🤘
Most of my collection I've had most my enitre life never threw nothing away. Now I buy what I want cause I can but everything has it's limits
I wish i wouldnt have traded in my old ps1 and genesis years ago. I was a kid and fell into the trap of "i need something new". So now my journey has been to reacquire the things i had (almost complete) and the things i really wanted but missed out on.
@GeeksOfRage1 yeah I was the one kids who asked other kids for old games they didn't want no more wasn't easy being the youngest of 7 trying to ask for games
I don't collect, I build a library. I buy games that I want to play and then I play them. I hold on to my games so I can revisit them and possibly pass them down to my kids if they want them.
Thats pretty much where im at. I only buy what i really want. Not worried about "look at all these shiny things!'
Great video homie! You did a great job explaining the process and talking about the traps. Collecting should be fun and have meaning. If it doesn't feel that way anymore.. it's time to step back! Love this video bro!
Thanks my man, i like discussing some things that people might not be thinkin about in full. Like i mentioned when i seen your vid, my mind went "oh, i can combine parts of this with the original idea i had". The topic to just explain why i personally collect, and then point out certain things i knew others did that i try not to do. It definitely helped me to sit there and record it while the ideas were fresh in my head. Thanks for watchin it!🤘
I'm not avidly collecting retro games at the moment myself, as I'm focused more on the Nintendo Switch, BUT I do have a little retro collection regardless! Great video brother, collecting is very addictive!
Oh yeah, i wanted to just bs for a bit on the different angles on why people not just collect retro, but also collecting in general. I know its real easy to get sucked right into the thick of it and throw money at stuff just to do it! Thanks for watchin my man!
Let me know your guys' thoughts!
I am loving them decorative Necronomicons in the back! Great video Roy! I wish I still had my old games. Moving around a lot as a kid, my games either got lost, stolen or thrown away.
Those are them lovely collectors edition dvds 😉. I love my evil dead stuff 10000% 🤘.
@@GeeksOfRage1 oh right. I forgot about those.
great points brother, I agree entirely
Thanks bro, i like doin vids like this every now and again to just bring certain things up to see what peoples thoughts are.
dude you have one of the best looking background rooms I've seen brother, I love it. on camera the colors and all really do look great, it looks like a gamers heaven down there!
I appreciate that for real! I know its not insanely huge, but its my hodgepodge of my loves in life! Its definitely my kick it spot 100% and i wish i could have people over more to enjoy it!
Heyo brother, lets go! Just starting but I wanted to get a comment in there for the algo gods!
Thanks brother, i appreciate it!
I think gaming is still evolving and hasn't peaked. Graphics can still look even more real, controls probably will get better and innovative, etc. As someone who played the original Final Fantasy 7 and love it I think the remakes are awesome and the battle system to them are so much better than the turn based one. I think a huge part to the idea of gaming not being good anymore is a lot of us older people, like older Millennials are holding on to the past a lot. We are pretty much the last generation to experience a real childhood; gaming without it being connected to the internet (like the older systems) and no phones glued to our faces. The world now is different, inflation keeps going up, cost of living keeps going up, we see kids these days not experiencing a childhood without an iPad or social media and all these things makes us sad. We revisit old games because they hold wonderful memories (like pictures) to a moment that can't really be replicated anymore. Some of us, aging is difficult, especially aging into a future that doesn't look so bright (most won't own homes, things keep getting expensive) Today, I was just watching a lot of Nights Into Dreams videos to revisit the good old past. It's a happy and sad feeling just listening to the soundtrack to the game
I can definitely understand a lot of what you said for sure. I keep going back and forth, but as of now i feel we have hit peak as far as the overall experience. But i do personally attach games to events in my life 100%, and ironically enough that is something i brought up in the vid im dropping today 😉.
When the world wasn't chaos and bad like now
Yeah, when people werent so connected and could just enjoy things!
@GeeksOfRage1 I miss this game and rather play the saturn version with the original saturn graphics than a remake with upgraded graphics. The saturn version is my childhood and this song turns me into a child.
@ecor150 it was defintely a solid game for times!
I was a PlayStation kid growing up, but enjoyed some N64 when I went over to my friend's house. Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Mario Kart64, and GoldenEye were fun back then. I have a N64 now, but only have like 8 games, so I cannot really judge most of the library. I can honestly say that all of the n64 games that I've played are fun. Nice stream, I'm going to keep this stream in mind when I get an N64 emulation setup figured out.
Thanks for watching wes! I was the same as you growing up, but i played a lot via emulation going into my 20s. Thar was how i played a lot of the games.
Had fun on this stream. Great work gentlemen!
Thanks my man, i appreciate ya!
Bruh they also need to make money the idea behind their boxes are the fact that it's a surprise as to which games your getting ofcourse they can't sent you boxes worth way more how are they supposed to survive as a company then they been around for years and no a Scam would be if they take your money and sent you nothing..now to watch the Video i just wanted to explain what VGM does also i love searching for smaller channels doing these unboxings as its fun to watch because again no one boxes are the same and it depends on which games you mark of on their website as well.
As i mentioned, i didnt expect like a crazy box worth way more than i paid. The issue is how it is presented i suppose. If they wanna give you nothing but low end games, thats fine. But when its presented in a way that you have the possibility to get games that are over the $20 mark, thats where it comes off a little grimy imo. If i wanted low end games, id just buy em out right off ebay and save money. Idk if that clarifies what my issue was, but thats what it was. I rolled the dice figuring the two boxes i got werent really gonna be anything of note. I get that maybe some people dont look at it that way. But for those looking to stretch their dollars on collecting, its a bad investment.
And also, thanks for watching, as i do appreciate it!
No problem my friend sorry if this comment seemed to be attacking. I was just trying to explain to people who may not know and English isn't my first language so sorry. Like i said i just enjoy watching these videos and other videos i subbed btw i always try and help smaller channels
@walcodebruyn2135 i appreciate ya, nah youre good. I just wanted to explain a bit further if maybe there was confusion on my position when it came to the boxes. Its one of those things that its not for everyone. For those that just like to crack boxes, its for the 100%. If youre looking to try and save while collecting, not so much.
Love this game since I was a child, dont listen to haters (and parrots), its an amazing game
I heard from a few that it definitely didnt (doesnt) deserve the hate it gets. Its one that i missed out on and wanted to play eventually.
All of them
they should make a 2d ninja gaiden 4, as these kinds of game are popular again as a pretext for a 3d ninja gaiden 4. i've beaten all these games (*cept nes NG3) and just beaten Master Ninja on NGB. love Ninja Gaiden
I havent played through the original 3 probably since i was a teenager. The first one i play every now and again, and need to finish it for retro achievements! But i do agree that they should totally do a new 2d version!
@@GeeksOfRage1 i went on a big grind on retroachievments a few months back on nes games. whats your username on there? always nice to see what other people are playing on there!
@im_cart8656 same as my yt channel "geeks of rage". Ironically as im typing this, i just fired up a stream to start grinding on zombies ate my neighbors 😆.
@@GeeksOfRage1 that's funny i was playing zombies ate my neighbors doom wad yesterday.. but i've never actually played the SNES game. hope i get a chance to check out your stream!
Thanks for hanging in there! Idk if you stuck around the whole time, but i did end up beating the game for the first time without save states! I was prettt pumped up!
I once lent a friend back in highschool borrow my Need for Speed Underground 2 on Xbox, and of course he said his Xbox scratched it all up. So the MVP Baseball 2005 he lent me went right back to Gamestop for store credit.
Hahahahaha, as it should have for bein a dick.
Terrible
Is that a Konami Code t-shirt I see?! SICK!!! Also, sweet pickups man, especially Left 4 Dead and Dante's Inferno, I love those 2 games!
Yes sir, had that one for at least 5 years now haha. Its an oldie but a goldie for sure!
@GeeksOfRage1 I'll say!! Love me some good Konami merch 👍
@TheMadBelmont 💯
