Why Methodist church is splitting you ask? Homosexuality is absolutely incompatible with the bible.. and you all need to be ashamed of yourselves to try to change the words of God to justify abomination in LGBTQ skubalon.. I used to attend Methodist.. in fact I was married inside of a methodist church.. that version of Methodist was still orthodoxy Christian Church which is not what I can say about you all..

Im a former UM pastor. I left over over the issue of the authority of scripture and failure of bishops to enforce the rules. I was a solo conservative pastor in a liberal district. Ironically, i would likely join the Gobal Methodist Church but i wish to be sure they are who they claim to be. . Personally i grew up in a traditional conservative methodist church and would feel comfortable in another theological tradition.

Alright, people's.... I'm 63, gay, methodist. I left the US and spent a wonderful, successful life in Europe. I returned to the United States recently to discover this split. As a kid my father invited a Jewish congregation to use the church while a synagogue was being built. A large segment of the congregation left.... honestly, 40 years later, in hindsight, there was no loss. The global UMC, well, it's there task to replace whatever it is they've gained with something substantive. Discrimination seems the flavor of the month, I'm sitting by and reading about the decline of Christianity à la Tim Alberta. Good riddance. 🎉

Openly LGBTQ lifestyles are not acceptable to God. Ordaining LGBTQ clergy in UMC or any other church is absolutely an abomination. And what about the UMC stance on unrestricted abortion? And pulling support from Israel? And removing the moral code for pastors being faithful to their spouse? It’s time for Bible-believing Christians to STAND UP AND DEFEND THE WORD OF GOD.

When a congregation allows themselves to have their ears tickled and desires preached to them, this is what you get. Oh, that’s in the Bible. 2 Timothy 4:3-4, For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth,.

In John 8:15-16, Jesus is warning against judging others based on a superficial view of a person, or "according to the flesh". Instead, Jesus claims that his judgment is true because he judges with the Father who sent him. Here are some other things to consider about judging others: Judging others can lead to condemnation: Jesus warns that judging others can lead to our own judgment and condemnation. Judging others can be a way to avoid seeing our own flaws: People may judge others to avoid focusing on their own flaws. Judging others can be a way to put others down: Judging others in a petty way can be a way to put them down. Judging others can be blind: Judging others can be blind because we fail to see that we indict ourselves by our words of judgment. Judging righteously requires seeing past the surface: Judging righteously requires seeing past the surface and down into the heart of a matter. Examining ourselves first: Jesus wants us to examine ourselves first before judging others. From the very beginning, God told man what was right and wrong. To Adam in the Garden, God said, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die” (Genesis 2:16-17). When the children of Israel came out of Egypt, God established His Law with them at Mount Sinai. The Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1-17) were not the whole law, but a summary of all that God had to tell them. The entire books of Leviticus and Deuteronomy are devoted to revealing to the Israelites God’s laws. Jewish rabbis say that there are 613 laws in the Torah (Books of Moses). Of those, 365 are in the “thou shalt not...” category. What are some examples of these sins? From the Ten Commandments we have false worship, idolatry, misusing God’s name, violating the Sabbath, dishonoring parents, murder, adultery, stealing, lying/libel, and coveting. In the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7), Jesus took some of these same sins to a new level. Regarding murder, Jesus said, “Anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment.... But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell” (Matthew 5:22). Regarding adultery, Jesus said, “Anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (Matthew 5:28). In Galatians 5:19-21, we are told, “The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.” Just these brief lists will give most people plenty of things to work on for a lifetime. In addition to the various lists that can be found in Scripture, we are told in 1 John 5:17 that “all wrongdoing is sin.” Not only does the Bible tell us the things not to do, but in James 4:17, we are informed that anyone “who knows the good he ought to do and doesn’t do it, sins.” When we try to compile a list of sins, we find ourselves buried under the guilt of our own failures because we discover that we have sinned far more than we realized. The Scriptures inform us, “All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written: ‘Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law’” (Galatians 3:10). While that statement might seem self-defeating, it is actually the best news possible. Since we can never fully keep God’s Law, there must be another answer, and it is found a few verses later: “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: ‘Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.’ He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit” (Galatians 3:13-14). The Law of God, or the lists of sins that we find in the Bible, serve as a tutor to “lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith” (Galatians 3:24).

@tudewickhoover this is very bad take and an example of somebody not having good reading comprehension. I am judging this person teachings because they are heratical. I am not judging anybody. Do not come with false religiosity and virtue signaling with me that I am old enough to understand the basics. Furthermore, if you cannot judge, why are you judging me for judging her message? Aren't you being inconsistent?

Most of my life I have been a member of and active in a beautiful and caring UMC in South Carolina. In that period of time, I have been proud of who we were and are in saving lives for Jesus and helping our community grow in a positive way. We have members of all age groups and a very active youth group. We are a large church with 1800 plus members. Thoughout my life I have been taught that there is a right and wrong way to act. We have certain actions/activitties that fall into right or wrong, good or evil. When certain "progressive" churches have decided they knew best on what was good and bad and they didn't give a hootabout how their actions/decisions might negatively impact other people, other churces. They vigoriously embraced the latest liberal ideas. After all, they had all the answers and all their answers were correct and only way. Sadly, for me and thousands of others, we saw the UMC leave us. We didn't leave the UMC- the UMC left us. Fortunately there are other choices for the people of God. Some have decided to become independent and some have joined the Global Methodist Church. Progressive politics has caused many problems in our country. We see the destruction of our culture in every aspect (crime, homelessness, higher taxes, lower standard of living, less respect for any authority, especially for law enforcement officers). And now the progressive destruction has entered our churces. Many foolish people have gone along with this. It's a go along to get along philosophy run amuck. So this is the sad state of affairs in our world and in the UMC. The cancer has spread but the patient is still alive. There is still hope. Thank you Jesus.

Be careful not to oversimplify with an "us vs. them perspective" when it comes to politics. There have been actions by both conservatives and liberals that have led to the problems you mention with society today. It's not black and white and unfortunately it is in our human instincts to gravitate towards these views (aka the deep rooted psychology of tribalism) but we have to rise above it. The sooner you do that, the sooner you'll see the true and complex actions that have led us here and be better suited to make choices that can help these problems.

First, pastors, elders and deacons, those who lead the church and preach the word (teaching bishop), are only to be male. The downfall of any church is if it allows women this role. The reason Paul forbade women to teach men is that their role is to be housewives and mothers, and to keep silent in the church, asking their husbands questions at home. Of course, women can lead the choir, play the instruments, teach women's and childrens groups, etc. but are forbidden to have the teaching authority over men. This is very clear in I Timothy and Titus. When a church become apostate, as has the UMC, Episcopal, PCA, ELC, etc it abandons Biblical doctrine in favor of a watered down message that the "itching ears" Paul refers to, then apostasy sets in and God's spirit abandons the church, not wanting to follow "sound" biblical doctrine, as churches are commanded to do, especially with sexual ethics and marriage.

I think actions speak louder than words (and some of the commenters here have a lot of words but I doubt fruitful action). Sylva First UMC is known for being a force for God's love and goodness in their community and that's truly what matters. And Rev. Mary Brown is a far better preacher and leader than some of the male pastors I have met and known in my life. I hope and pray that someday Christians everywhere will actually live by the words of Jesus, rather than judging one another on their gender, whether they said the right words or followed the rules to the letter and start bearing fruit. Jesus said, “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples” (John 15:7-8, NIV)

Barby, you are right about the lady pastors being more moral and upstanding than a lot of male pastors. But we need to stick to Scripture, and not water it down to fit societal norms! Paul says in Titus and I Timothy that women are not to have the spiritual teaching over men in the church. If we reject the Bible, we reject Christ, and we will not enter Heaven!
