Trying MyFordBoy's Method
I review MyFordBoy's Lost PLA Greensand Casting method. It's a combination of Lost PLA Casting and Greensand Casting, so it should be pretty straightforward... right?

The sand needs to be finer. When squeeze testing it should copy and hold every crease of your palm.
Nifty! I would want a PTFE coated temperature probe though, putting steel in certain acid mixtures would not turn out well.
Respect
I'm new to pouring. Every time I "pound" the clay into the mold, the clay "cracks" in certain places. It usually doesn't crack or split, where I was using the hammer. When I add more clay, it still happens. Is it possible I'm pounding too hard on the hammer? Thank you in advance.
Isn't ivestment powder just gypsum (30%) and slilica powder (70%) mix? why is it so expensive?
Just a suggestion but you need to keep the flame on the molten metal and on the material in the flask as you are pouring yes you were pouring at two lower temperature just keep the flame on it on the mold and the crucible with your liquid metal and that’s the trick for better flow
Hello! I want to build a stirplate + low voltage warmer foil. My question is does the moving magnet generate eletriciti in a heating foil? Is that a problem, what do you think?
Did you try lost wax or lost foam?
I always wondered how plumbus's were made.
Wouldn't casting with wax add carbon to the metal? Carbon is in steel.
Something that should be tried is after the pour hold the mold/can firmly with the pliers and take an electric sander without abrasive attached turn it on and hold the rubber/velcro cushion against the handle of the pliers for a bit before it solidifies to see if it can move trapped air to the top and out of the casting.
did you die? ive been waiting for pt 2 lol
Lol not yet, ad revenue doesn't pay the bills so I have been building another business
Secret fireproof wood? This was discovered in the 1800's! 😂 Also, not a long term solution for exterior use! "In terms of moisture resistance, sodium silicate soaked samples were exposed to effects of weathering for a one year period. It was found that there was evidence of leaching of sodium silicate from the wood, with approximately fifty percent of the sodium silicate removed after one year".
I heard that borax is also good wood treatment that makes it fire resistant, interesting to compare against the sodium silicate
I recently made myself a $30 DRO for my mill which may be of interest "Super cheap Digital Readout (DRO)"
Water plus sand is dangerous! Just don´t try this method, imho! - Evaporating water may explode that flask. One unit of water generates 3.500 units of steam!..
That's why he's doing the break test. He is only wetting the mixture to field capacity. That's why he says not to have any excess water in it. But genuinely it is metallurgy, an air bubble will blow up too. I think it goes without saying if you choose this hobby or career, it is neither safe nor simple, caution is something we all have to use even outside metallurgy.
Can't blow up if there's no way to build pressure. If anything It'll just steam and damage the sands shape causing imperfections. Oil sand works better but it's nasty to work with.
What a DRAG…. Not sure if I can COPE with all of this, But I will Try!… 🤙🏻
When you start with cat litter instead of fine river sand, you fail from penny pinching.
50% sand 50% clay, this is the correct approach, never use water to make it damp, use engine oil..
memang perlu usaha yang betul /// salam hanya bisa melihat anda . salam
you cant just "mix" sand, you have to MULL it. and that takes effort. that was some terrible looking "greensand". way too wet, and barely holding together. i only cast with aluminium castings. extrusion never works very well... wouldnt bother with adding silicon unless doing something stupid thin... theres years of effort have gone into figuring out spruing and risers, mold design for decent castings... well worth doing some more research FIRST.
Amazing work! Thank you for showing us your tries!
Trial and error aren't a waste of time, it's the only reliable process to learn such things, and master them given enough repetition and reflection. You show this very well, and it's an impressive video at that.
"Check back soon for try 2..." Narrator: And then they never heard from him again.
Woe is me! How to repair a pin hole in a stainless steel large stock pot I use for cooking and clothes dying? I need a food safe solder that is ok for high heat. Please anyone? Desperate. Costs too much to replace and is a great stock pot.
👍💓!
👍💓!!
👍💓!!
use fine silica sand
Allmost click bait. Was expecting experienced safety advise not amature experimentation
Haha a war almost starts every time an american says aluminium wrong, but even typing it wrong has to be the troll of the decade 😂
Nah, you did it right on that machining! Happy Thanksgiving! I am grateful for your entertaining videos!
Puoring of melted metal must be continuous. Never stop pouring until full.
It is sufficient for the plaster to dry out in 50 - 70 C. Putting it to 100 C is too violent causing it to crack as water will explode out. Good work
What kind of aluminum are you using. My instinct would be to break up some large cast aluminum part like a transmission housing or some such.
Only on a couple of occasions but I have used phosphoric/hydrochloric acid rust-remover as flux for soft soldering stainless steel with success.
What is the white powder you use i know you said talc but im looking for the exact bottle you have also do you just use a steel spoon to mix the metal and what are the tools you use to carve out the sand you need to remove
try coating in thin dry wall compound and then cover with sand, while wet. a few coats then place this in a container and add loose dry sand. This should allow the gases to escape better.
Sand casting is about 4000 years old. In my opinion it is obsolete.
I would love to try this but looks difficult
Sir, a Very good video. Where can I get "Water Glass". Google couldn't tell me and Amazon is a no go
I know this is an old video, maybe you can make a new one with 'lost chocolate' casting.
Adding strontium to your melt will help with your shrinkage as will adding gas , when you did the pour and you got speckled frosting on top of the metal it was gas you can get gasing tablets to put into your crucible or if you are feeling very VERY BRAVE you can introduce moisture into crucible the old fashioned way, you could start with a piece of dry timber 24 inches long and a half inch square and give it a stir it will burn and bubble the bubbling is the result of the gas going into the metal, if you think I'm joking or if you need a demonstration reply to this and I will be happy to show you a video that I will make on Monday at work, ps please wear a face shield and gloves , I won't bother I've been pouring aluminium for the past 28 years .
I just use carbon molds sold on eBay and heat them on a gas grill to 400 then I shut off the grill and pour then I wait about 10 min and put the ingot in a 5 gallon bucket of water and clean with a brass brush and polish
Talc causes cancer, just fyi chose an alternative.
Casting glass.
Can you melt copper or brass in that furnace as well?
pt looks like the indian sand has like oil in it, its not dry
Pretty cool video. I poured a lot of iron in my younger days and did a lot of molding as well. Always enjoy watching these kinds of videos.
why not try with cement powder or calcium powder.
