the soldering straight onto the batteries is horrifying, might be good to look into a spot welder before your next pack, maybe a bms to go with

I remember my first battery pack, my end result looked the same as yours that was 20 years ago im 25 now. live and learn. But serious get a spot welder and dremel and bms.

The short circuit has nothing to do with spot welding or soldering. Yes, spot welding is easier and cleaner, but soldering works as well. I solder my battery packs, soldering may effect the battery performance, but I have yet to see a proper scientific research paper on that. And none of the packs I have soldered have failed yet.

This is wrong on so many levels.... First, battery packs should be spot wekded to protect the cells from excessive heat. Second, if you must solder, use a wide solder tip blazing hot to shorten the time spent on the battery (sand down the battery ends a bit and apply flux). Third, twist and presolder your wires and keep a short exposed wire. Fourth, the wires connecting the cells are too thin. Needless to say those battery cells are toast. Keep an eye on the internal resistance while charging to avoid any surprises. Please go and watch some good vids on making battery packs before attempting this again. You are putting yourself at risk...

Dude don't solder 18650 or like batteries. The amount of heat you need for the length of time you need literally damages the internal battery structure. You should spot weld these cells only. And spot welders are a dime a dozen now that can do basic spots (not high amperage welds though). You're also really lucky those are discharged cells, or just really low amperage cells. Usually when this happens the metal object welds itself across the terminals!💥

There is a reason why battery connections are spot welded, not soldered🙃 I hope you are well insured💣

lol. did much teh same the other day. my first BMS... brainfart, attached PV panel positive to the charge negative input, forgetting theyre common positive... no smoke. just a dead BMS. second bms, no probs. solder the plug on... with a opposing plug to stop it deforming under the heat... the solder just brushed the heatsink as i did the positive... minor smoke, not from the BMS... third BMS... nothing? just DOA? no output. no charge current. nothing. apparently i have to short them or load them or do something to get them to "turn on", which i tried... with no success. and it may be the same issue with the second BMS, but who cares? i just tossed the cells, BMS, everything, and went and wired up the panels to a water heater instead. 10S10P, and all the cells are about 1/3rd of the labels rating anyway. chinese junk... i need a battery im going for lead acid. at least the damn things work and dont need stupid "management" systems. get a bigger soldering iron, you need 120W at least, speed is the key to soldering cells.

This would be nice for old laptop batteries, but it wouldn't be safe to do as a home project without safety protocols or physical protection like gloves because once a battrie cell gets connected from negative to postive the metal gets way to hot for human skin, but this video is cool asf sorry for yapping 🤣
