    What temperature should the greenhouse be maintained for the seedless watermelon (daytime and nighttime temps)?

    • @postapplescsa

      Ideally 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. They will still grow at a lower temperature but it will be much slower.

      @@postapplescsa Thank you Great information. Really appreciate the details We are also a CSA Farm We started growing small seedless watermelons last year with some success but need to up our skills with getting our seeds to germinate better as we only had 50% germination last year. I suspect we planted 50% of our seed upside down. I also like the idea of covering the trays with plastic wrap for three days.

    • @postapplescsa

      @dixiechilieranch You should try the variety Cracker Jack. They germinate really fast and we have been told they are the sweetest red seedless watermelon.

      @@postapplescsa We are very happy with our Piccadilly variety. They are small individual watermelons that work great with our CSA customers as they are the size of a medium cantaloupe and easy to handle as they fit in our CSA boxes for delivery.

    I liked how you added the explanation of how you plant the watermelons with a graphic. And the eclipse was incredible. Our entire neighborhood fell silent and then let out an audible cheer once totality began. Every so often humanity reminds you that it can be wonderful.

  • @kitana097

    Isn’t suppose to be pointed side down? The root comes out of the pointed side right?

    • @kitana097

      Pointed side of the seed should be down?

    • @postapplescsa

      That is a great question. You would think that to be true but with seedless (triploid) watermelons the seed coat will adhere to the cotyledons and planting the seed pointed end up will virtually eliminate that. With seeded watermelon it doesn't matter the orientation of the seed. We have been planting watermelons for over 10 years and have a very good success rate planning them this way.

    • @dmtudder

      I planted 15 watermelon seeds pointed side up. The seeds cracked and most of them ended up with the roots above soil and the C leaves buried in soil. I ended up removing the seedling and turning them around. Maybe if I’d buried them deeper it would have been ok, but this did not work for me.

    • @postapplescsa

      @dmtudder What variety of watermelon did you plant? The seedless watermelon we plant needs to be about an inch under the soil.

    • @dmtudder

      @@postapplescsa I did that wrong. I put in soil just under surface and then Perlite over top. Another grower does it that way. I planted orange crisp, jubilee and F1 seedless. Jubilee being seeded. They all rooted from air and back into soil. If I’d done this differently, they would have uprighted. I think it still should be pointed side down tho. One issue that I’ve had and many others have is leggy seedlings. The heat mat should be used for 1.5-2 days maximum. Leggy seedlings are compromised.
