This is the perspective of one or two people. I was raised in Columbia and we had a great childhood. Depending on your idea of places to hang out, there are plenty of things to do, of course not like hanging out at the harbor, but Columbia pretty much shuts down by a particular hour, which is not a bad thing. We were exposed to all nationalities, made friends with many, it being a melting pot of sorts. Howard County does have the best school system, but it's not as safe as it used to be, but the housing prices still reflect the old thoughts of being the safest place to live, which is really not true. Every place has it's bad elements, people and places.. But if you are planning to move to Columbia or thinking about it, speak to many different people raised here. I can say that it has gotten over crowded and has developed more of our land than Rouse had planned.....hence it no longer being the safest place to live. Many of us that grew up here cannot afford to live here, which is the saddest thing for us. I am still an advocate for Howard County living, it's just not the place it used to be.

MY WIFE AND I GOT LOST THERE TOO!! We stopped in Vegas on a road trip, and literally got lost in this place so badly that we missed an activity we had tickets for. We were wandering around feeling like idiots for so long

Lived here from July -92 to August -93. Not a long time, granted, but I became well acquainted with Columbia and nearby towns. I had just gotten my driver's license that year, so I just enjoyed driving all over, exploring the area as much as I could. Watching footage from people's dash cams does not really bring back any memories. It's all very generic, copy paste architecture. I don't remember traffic congestion being a thing 30 years ago. The whole lakefront area was quite accessible, even on weekends. Some places that existed at the times was The Tomato Palace which used those at the time innovative buzzers to let you know when your table was ready. There was also a steak house called Clyde's. And of course Bennigan's. Shopping was good. Got all decked out in early 90s fashion at the Gap in Columbia Mall and picked up the latest games at Babbage's. Hunan Manor, I ate there at least 3 times a month. Loved that place.
