Mali Morris: Returning
Mali Morris: Returning is the largest exhibition to date by this renowned British abstract painter, who studied at the Department of Fine Art, University of Newcastle, from 1963 -1968.
She is best known for her use of fresh, vibrant colour, her paintings noted for their luminosity and translucence, characterised by a lightness of touch. The show features around 40 key works spanning 45 years, tracing the development of her painting from the early gestural and stained pieces to the more recent geometric layering.
Morris' work is held in numerous public collections, from the Arts Council Collection, The Whitworth Manchester, Fitzwilliam Cambridge, to the Museum of Wales Cardiff. She was elected to the Royal Academy in 2010, and in 2022 was commissioned to design 33 banners to hang above Bond Street during the summer of that year.
She is delighted to return to the Hatton Gallery after all these years, where, as she says, 'it all began'.
The show is co-curated by Sam Cornish, author of Mali Morris: Painting, published by RA in 2019, and Zoe Allen.
Mali Morris: Returning is on display at Newcastle University's Hatton Gallery from 14 September 2024 - 11 January 2025.
The exhibition and accompanying film and publication were generously supported by the Catherine Cookson Foundation.

Incredible! Thank you!
Great series Alan. Off topic - Just reminiscing with my Dad - you were opening a store, on Team Valley I think, around 40 years ago. You had a twisting competition and my dad won a Green Giant from you. I was there with him. He still has the prize :) My family and I were listeners to Night Owls in the early days - great show and nothing similar or as good since. Hope all is well.
Looks a really good exhibition and looks like they have interpreted the painting really well. Unfortunately I won't be able to see it in Newcastle as it is too far away. But hopefully I can see it when it is back in London.
"GET TO THOSE PHONES!"
Wish I was there to see it. Love contemplative themes. Atheist greetings from South Africa. All of the best.
Thanks for this. I was born and brought up in Newcastle upon Tyne. My mother was Steinberg the Dressmaker in Gisforth. Looking forward to diving into the archive. Thanks for all your work. Ruth steinberg
You're welcome Ruth, great to hear you're going to explore the new site.
Interesting and intriguing video , very well produced
Nice! Thanks. The close-up shots are interesting. He was a very opportune master of his time.
I used to listen to your radio show on radio Tees, quite a few moons ago lol
Love the guy in the background at the 3:15 mark shaking his fist . Too funny .
Gunna take a visit over weekend
I wouldn't be having her as a representative for a museum. She is vile foul mouthed and thinks it's ok to call people mental online and not in a humorous way.
50 million years, the story was it evolved out of being a coelacanth. Then we find that they are not rare but plentiful in madagascar and have NO evolutionary changes.... So 50 million years no fossil record, then randomly appears with no evolutionary changes... Something they are not telling you with the story, is it disproves the fossil record. Just type in the word on youtube and see tons of videos of people diving with these fish... They are not "rare" lol.
I was told the old graves with scull and bones were graves of Knights Templars
No, it depicts we are all mortal
It was the Normans who conquered England in 1066. Not the French. Tho the Normans, descendents of Viking conquerers, had adopted the French language.
did a battle of the bands there once, amazing place, a real maze backstage of narrow passages
Thank you for doing this presentation. The colored altars look more nice and interesting. Same for the statuary by the way. I am these days building such a kind of altar. We'll use it for feeding birds.
yer the dolcey mayfair bowers, back in the early seventies, newcastle lost its culture after the 70s really gone down hill lost forever become a dump, destroyed by demolition
Very very interesting and educating video thank you Alan
So that's why no one ever takes that shortcut from the Biggy to the Quayside at night.

St. Antony's College, Oxford, had some of her papers and had an exhibit on her. They own her writing table
I didn't know that, thanks for sharing.
So interesting How fascinating our history is
Let's hope the actual film is better than the trailer.
Fantastic and moving exhibition.
Thanks Stephen, we're so glad you enjoyed it!
never been there for 51 yrs. there used to be a 2 handed sword on display would be interesting does it cater for disabled
Hi Trevor, We certainly do! Here's a link to our visit page which includes more information. laingartgallery.org.uk/visit/access-information
Spectacular and really thought provoking. Well done.
Thanks Malcolm, glad you enjoyed it!
Interesting: thank-you! It's a pity that the WREN uniform was shown against a dark background, making it hard to see. It would have been good to have covered the women working in (for example) munitions factories.
Hi Tina, we're so glad you enjoyed the episode. We'll definitely keep this in mind for the future!
Can you consider a noise cancelling microphone or similar.
I used to go to the Dolce in the 70s I heard about that story then.
Very informative with period artefacts.
Very monotonous voice
Dawn -- You can't criticise someone due to their voice. It's unfair!
Great, really effective!
I was never tought this in school ( howden) it was only when my kids went to school in gateshead i found out about it
Going to see what else I can find out about Atenociticus after watching this!
That's great! Glad you enjoyed the film and let us know what you find
I also did online research about Antenociticus and his representations. Especially once I realised these ressemble somebody I know.
I am so hoping the Exhibition will still be open after this Winter lockdown. I have just bought the book, and it is beautifully illustrated and informative. Please send the Exhibition up to Scotland next.
I hope I get to see the exhibition...
How I miss the Hatton !
Wonderful I was dying to see this hopefully it will still be on when we are allowed out again!
Great film, thanks for sharing. Do you know if there are any good books on Linder?
Thanks for watching Jonathan! We'd highly recommend the Linderism exhibition catalogue which is published by Koenig Books.
