Harmony Korine - America's Director
I've always admired Korine's creativity and vision, and now I have finally assembled most of my thoughts. I hope this video helps us all to move the conversation away from shock and schlock and towards an appreciation of his unique place within the film landscape, especially in America.
If you want to learn some more about Korine's development and vision, beyond his films, I cannot recommend "Harmony Korine: Interviews" by Eric Kohn enough. I wish I had more time to dig into all of Korine's interesting and excellent insights into filmmaking gathered in that volume, some of which may become the basis for future videos.

    You are absolutely spot on, Harmony is no doubt the number one writer/director of our whole entire generation. He lived and wrote about how most of us lived, those of us born 1975 - 1990 (give or take). Street life/culture, skateboarding, music, partying, drugs, booze, sex, friends, screwed up family life, violence, mayhem, weirdness, growing up, death, debauchery, excess, yada yada. He knows how the show the all out ridiculousness of America in the 1990s and 2000s, all the sleaze and everything in between

      Thank you for the kind words and for taking your time to listen to my thoughts! I was trying to make a list of other interesting/underrepresented filmmakers to cover later, and you just gave me two excellent additions (I've never actually seen a Guy Maddin movie, but I have been wanting to for a while). And Dogme 95 would be a whole host of fun to cover...

    • @synesthesiac
      @synesthesiac 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think you'll find a lot of inspiration in Maddin's films, tons to dig through. I also highly suggest all of Maya Deren's work. But I'm a sucker for abstraction & film grain. In a lot of ways I think Harmony's AggroDr1ft speaks to some of the earlier abstract filmmakers.

    • @filmfourall
      @filmfourall 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I love abstraction and grain too, and I want to do a larger video on the avantgarde in the future, which of course means diving into Deren's work (I've only seen "Meshes of the Afternoon" so far). I agree AggroDr1ft is definitely related to earlier abstract works that we just don't see any more, or that at least haven't been discovered and brought into the "mainstream." Watching 2001 the other day, I couldn't help but think of AggroDr1ft as the stargate sequence extended out to feature length (shifting colors, groundbreaking tech, etc.). I don't think it's quite as successful as that sequence, but I'm just happy that someone close to the mainstream is pushing the boundaries again.

    I really appreciate this video as there's not a lot of serious discourse around Korine (much less appreciation) to dig into, always turning into dismissal or as you said, "just edgy." He might be my favourite filmmaker and his philosophies were genuinely revolutionary to me when I discovered some of his interviews (the one with Herzog about Gummo is my favourite). I wanted to share a couple of elements about Korine that I think go even more overlooked than the appreciation of his films themselves, which is that 1) I can't fully theorise this but I consider Korine to be a dadaist as well. In Gummo, he's expressed how the thing he's most excited for about the film is the taped bacon on the wall - obviously a very bizarre and random artistic decision but I find it (and he does too ofc) to be oddly stimulating in a poetic sense. There's often an unexplainable feeling in poetry that I think Korine has been able to capture, which I believe is due to the confronting nature of dadaism present in a lot of the images. I'd say this is probably what makes some of said images to be emotionally charged for the viewer whether negative or otherwise. And the second thing about him is that I heavily relate to his process and way of thinking in an ADHD sense. He's only interested in shooting or creating whatever images interest him (his words) which is also most likely the reason for the small amount of films he's made but I digress. He works and thinks on moments of spontaneity and fascination which is what I think makes the films truly unique and "alive" in its poetics. Great video, I truly think he should be taken more seriously artistically.

    Do you have a list of “bad but good” movies you would recommend?

    • @filmfourall
      @filmfourall 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That would be a massive list and hard to compile because sometimes they just turn out bad… I would say a lot of 60s/70s sci-fi and horror “B”/exploitation movies are a great place to start, as are Italian genre stuff (Giallo, Western, and Crime). Death Race 2000, The Trip, What Have They Done to Your Daughters, and The Mansion of Madness are some titles that immediately come to mind (Arrow Video and Vinegar Syndrome are great places to look, especially if you like physical media). The struggle here is that genre fans will generally just call these good, and they have grounds to do so, but they all have glaring weaknesses and interesting strengths. Not only that, but if you aren’t used to watching them, it can be hard to see through some of the junk to the greatness. For me, I always look for films that try and tackle themes and ideas I appreciate, aren’t super well received, but have some wacky or redeeming aspect to make it worth my time. That helps me better see what’s right, what’s wrong, and what could be better. Hopefully that answered your question :)

    You should practice cinema. You can afford a camera, and you don't need to have actors and a storyline, but can practice cinema as a pure art form through trying to convey moods from pure scenery and landscapes, life scenes or basic stuff like sun sets. You can edit this, then put music to it; and there, you are practicing cinematic art. This is good, and it is good if you get inspired by good works by other good artists. All painters had other painters they modelled their own posing and stature from. Film is interoperative with a lot of other disciplines though, and if you understand these other disciplines well and have experience in them that does good. Francis Ford Coppola's family used to produce music and plays, you see a recreation of one of these in his Godfather films, and certainly good musicians don't harm film, Charlie Chaplin being another example of someone current and talented at both creative types of work.

      @@filmfourall Honestly I think the best advice on film-making, is sort of like the advice on how to be a tough guy to make people fear your reputation - as Orson Welles puts it, in ''Lady of Shanghai'' - when talking about crime, points out a singer to him: ''What makes him sing better than me? Something in here. What makes it loud? A microphone. That´s his edge. That´s his edge. -Edge? -A gun, a nightstick or a razor. Something the other guy ain´t got. An extra reach on a punch, instead of brass knuckles, a stripe on a sleeve... ...a badge that says ´´cop´´ on it, a rock in your hand... ...or a bankroll in your pocket. '' Of course, I'm not suggesting you go rob some people down or get yourself in trouble, but Orson here is right, there's no difference in crime or in film making- it's all just an ordinary guy like you but that's got a little bit of an edge.

    • @filmfourall
      @filmfourall 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@JingleJangleJam There is definitely something to be said about having a reputation, hopefully one of respect instead of fear. I'm curious how you connect this idea to filmmaking. Is it through the finding of your edge (style?), a stoic attitude, or something else? Is there a way you see this aura informing the created work beyond a stronger self and hardened will to get it done (aka does it affect what themes, ideas, or materials are addressed in the films themselves)? I apologize if I just missed the answers in your response, my brain is running a little slow today...

    I see film as a branch of literature because you need something written down to make one. I treat it like reading a book so when nothing but good cinematography happens I still give it a failing grade from having no one behind the wheel. I've brought up the jar to several people and that's a clear example of a person only caring about what's being seen and not what is between the pages (because the creator has none).

    • @filmfourall
      @filmfourall 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I too see film as a branch, or at least deeply connected to, literature as many, if not all, of the narrative structures and methods of analysis have been carried over. One thing I have been researching recently is how to separate film from literature and the people trying to find its own structures and grammar. I am convinced that this is possible, but what exactly that looks like is hard to say… One thing is certain though, it’ll be a whole lot more than pretty cinematography.

    I don’t care what anyone says, it’s my all time favorite movie next to Army of Darkness. Lots of fun, great performances from the whole cast, and a really great message. Love to see it get some appreciation

    I thought it would be a sort of "gang" movie, so I skipped it when it first came out at the movie rental place. Then I decided to watch it because it had Norm Reedus in it, and I liked him in TWD. BOOM! What a fun movie!!! Liked the 2nd movie also, can't wait for the John Wick people to make the 3rd one!

    Great recs. I really love Antonioni's L'avventura and La notte as well, such beautiful films that create a powerful mood

      Thank you! I really need to see La notte and rewatch L’avventura because it left me with a strangely profound but hazy feeling once it was over. I have no idea if I liked it, loved it, or disliked it; but it has definitely stuck with me…

    For those who don't know, when it first came out it was 1999. It was straight to video because of columbine school shootings, it was marked as a vigilante film, why today a cult classic. The McManus brothers please rise. Erin ho BRAH!!!!!

    I could argue both films are GREAT, Right into the ground. And I could also argue both films and mid, right into the ground. The only thing I will say is it wasn't made for today's sensibilities.
