Welcome to the Roman Roads Research Association's You Tube Channel. The Roman Roads Research Association is the only organization in the world devoted to the study of Roman roads, not just in Britain but across the former Roman empire. Formed in 2015, we now have nearly 400 members mainly in Britain but with a strong international contingent from as far afield as Australia, Japan and the U.S.A..

Currently studying for a MA in Archaeology at the University of Reading, Keith has been leading a project to research the archaeology of Roman West Berkshire and in particular the area around Wickham with colleagues from the Berkshire Archaeological Society. Road Construction and Transport in the Empire - What did they think they were doing? by Ray Laurence
มุมมอง 4717 หลายเดือนก่อน
The archaeology of road construction in Roman Britain rightly has a focus on the documentation of evidence, and we need to recognise how the actions of road building after 43 CE shaped the structure of England and to some extent Wales. This paper sets out to use the evidence for road building within Italy with a view to setting out what might have been the thinking of the Roman elite about comm...
The Military Roads of Scotland by John Poulter
มุมมอง 6237 หลายเดือนก่อน
There will be lots of photographs of the Military Roads in Scotland, largely as built in the 1700s under General Wade and his successor, as Inspector of Roads, Major Caulfeild. A comparison will be made with Roman Roads, which were planned and constructed quite differently, albeit with similar purposes for their existence. The historical background will also be presented, along with the subsequ...
A Typical Assemblage? by Lindsay Allason-Jones OBE
มุมมอง 4178 หลายเดือนก่อน
Roman roads cut across landscapes heading towards sites or by-passing them. All these sites, whether military or civilian, produce finds but the day we held in Berwick recently on the matter of the Devil's Causeway led to the question: is there a typical assemblage that one might expect to find on a fort or on a Romano-British settlement? This talk looks at the finds that might be discovered in...

The Romans in SW Scotland: A Review by Andrew Nicholson
มุมมอง 1.3Kปีที่แล้ว
An examination of maps of SW Scotland in the Roman period in recent publications indicates that most are a couple of decades out of date. Archaeological fieldwork, research, metal-detector finds, new aerial photography flights and the public availability of Lidar data for more than 80% of Dumfries and Galloway have added considerably to our knowledge over the last fifteen or so years. Regional ...
Trimontium: a key node in the Roman occupation of Scotland by Dr John Reid
มุมมอง 1.7Kปีที่แล้ว
Before 1697, Scotland's only Roman milestone was found near Cramond on the Forth. The ansate panel recorded the distance to Trimontium, the Roman name for the vexillation-sized fortress sited close to modern day Newstead in the Scottish Borders. The fort, lying on Dere Street, had been a major frontier fort and also a supply depot for the Antonine Wall, occupied until its destruction sometime i...
Charles Bertram & 'De Situ Britanniae' by Dr. Francis Young
มุมมอง 497ปีที่แล้ว
The De Situ Britanniae and the eighteen Itineraries contained within it, supposedly compiled by Richard of Cirencester, appear frequently as source material in 18th & 19th century writings on Roman history and Roman roads in particular, and even some 20th century ones, but is generally held to be a hoax perpetrated by Charles Bertram, in the 18th century. Francis will talk about the impact of t...
Vindolanda - a fort and frontier in transition by Dr. Andrew Birley
มุมมอง 2.8Kปีที่แล้ว
Today we see the Roman frontier, especially Hadrian’s Wall, presented as a serene monument fixed in stone. This largely peaceful and tranquil ruin is situated in the beautiful rolling hills of Northumberland. However, such images, while evocative, conceal the grimier ever day realities and opportunities that frontier people faced, either as members of the military community or as those oppresse...
Boudica, street grids and the changing face of Caistor Roman town by Prof Will Bowden

Please note we had a number of technical difficulties during this talk. Venta Icenorum (Caistor-by-Norwich) was the civitas capital of the Iceni and has long been known for the clarity with which its streets and buildings appear on aerial photographs. Since 2006 the site and its surroundings have been the subject of investigations by the University of Nottingham and Caistor Roman Project, which...
Reinterpreting Roman Roads in the Chilterns - insights from LiDAR by Dr E. Peveler and N. Rothwelll

In the winter of 2018/19 high resolution LiDAR data was acquired by the Chilterns Conservation Board (CCB) to investigate archaeological features, and particularly the Iron-Age, within the Chilterns. These data, which have been made publicly accessible through the Beacons of the Past Project, have shed new light (literally and figuratively) on an intensively managed Later Prehistoric - Roman ag...

Conquest: The Rivers and Roads of Flavian Scotland by Andrew Tibbs
มุมมอง 1.4K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Scotland is one of the few areas of the ancient world which was never completely occupied by the Roman army, and despite numerous attempts, never fully assimilated into the Empire. Arguably, it was during the 1st century that the Imperial Army made the most successful inroads into the lands beyond the province of Britannia, reaching as far as the shores of the Moray Firth in the north. However,...
