Fixing our rusty stock tank pool
The galvanized stock tank pool began to rust 18 months after setting it up. Here is what we did to remove the rust and try to protect it. Watch to the end to see the results!

    • @austinediblegardens
      @austinediblegardens ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sjelliott6660 I think we didn't get the rust in that spot good enough. And the seam of the tank is just hard to seal. All is holding steady for now. Any new rust is right along the lip of the tank where we didn't epoxy.

    Have you thought of using cold zinc paint to regal anime it?

  • @apple_jaxx
    @apple_jaxx ปีที่แล้ว

    So if we take those steps with the epoxy prior to ever using the pool, we should be about to prevent rust? Is it feasible to also empty the water when not in use and store it someplace dry? We have a shed it could sit covered in. I can't help but think having it exposed to elements 24/7 helps bring on rusting. Sure it's a pain but knowing you'd just need a few hours to fill and pre for use off season isn't so bad. During summer I would likely leave it.

    • @austinediblegardens
      @austinediblegardens ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, epoxy beforehand would be a great idea. Just prevent rust from the start! And yes, you can empty it and store it when not in use. They are meant to be sitting in fields for cattle to drink out of. It's just the chlorine you have to worry about.

    I'm sorry to hear about this happening. And here I had just about gotten my wife to give me permission to build one of these.. :D Thoughts on the rust and more so in the joint or cracks. I wonder if there is any flex in the metal there. To say that maybe you did a fine job fixing the pool and coating the tank but when you filled the pool with water to metal flexed and cracked the epoxy there and that is allowing the water to get through and "under" the epoxy?

    • @austinediblegardens
      @austinediblegardens 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So far the little rust spots are not spreading at all. So yes, maybe some got 'under' the epoxy at the seams, but that's it and all will be fine. I'll post another update in a few months. So far, so good.

    What is your recommendation for filling the beds??

    • @austinediblegardens
      @austinediblegardens 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A soil compost blend. 50/50 or 75% soil to 25% compost. I get it pre-mixed from a few different bulk yards in Austin. I recommend calling around asking how yards make their soils. Ours here contain sand, rice hulls, pecan shells, etc. And I'm always amending the soil with organic matter like compost once or twice a year.

      It changes seasonally. There's not set schedule. I usually start with every other day for 30 mins in the morning and adjust as needed. Even though there is a timer on it, I am ALWAYS out there using the manual control, or shutting it off completely to not overwater. Very important!
