Revolution XX Super Tarantula - Full-Vent Sail in Light Wind?
The wind was light that evening (2-6 MPH). I hardly ever get to fly in light conditions, so I brought what I thought was the mid-vent XX Tarantula to the beach, but I mistakenly packed the full-vent XX Super Tarantula instead. The results were surprising!

    What are your thoughts about your hand position being in a less ideal position or form? For example, the /\ position in your hands would be a better form for learning reverse flight, as opposed to what you are demonstrating in this video =. I'd like your thoughts on this as i enjoy watching you and care to know what you think. I believe the horizontal position - - is another form people tend to use. The = form is inhibiting a less ideal form for connecting maneuvers from what ive heard. Thanks for sharing and your time.

    Hi, I'm looking at this either this or xx super tarantula. Which would you recommend/prefer in regards to wind range, versatility in regards to wind range. Which is more forgiving learning wise. I have a home made Rev 1.5 but have not flown it since the noughties. I like how the way these reflex models float, are they able to axel?

    • @__revbox
      @__revbox 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would definitely recommend the XX Super Tarantula as a versatile all-rounder. ### RX Super Spider ### The RX Super Spider has a very specific use case: strong winds (10-25 MPH). It maintains a light, sensitive and snappy feel in stronger winds, and flies sideways and in reverse better than a standard RX. Due to the reduced sail area, it doesn't float particularly well, but it can deliver consistent 3D catch & throws even when the wind picks up (up to around 15 MPH). Axles are possible; I've found that slackening the Reflex springs makes them a little easier, but it's difficult to make them properly flat. Also, I've found this model quite easy to Flic-Flac (with the 15" handles). I enjoy the sensitive and sharp handling of this model, and I fly on 15" handles to further increase this aspect. It's like having my mouse sensitivity turned way up - it's easy to overshoot stops and turns at first (I overshot a dive-stop in this video and many times after that), but after a while, it makes the XX models feel like flying in slow motion. ### XX Super Tarantula ### Although this model has a "Full Vent" sail like the RX Super Spider, it is larger and retains enough sail area to fly in light winds (5-25 MPH). This model has a rated wind range of (10-26+ MPH) on the Revolution Kites website, but from experience, I reckon it's more like (5-25 MPH). I'm flying in sub 5 MPH winds here: th-cam.com/video/DjfhbHeuUAk/w-d-xo.html The XX Super Tarantula delivers the precise and stable handling of the XX, but it feels lighter, and it reverses and slides sideways better. Glides and floats are incredible with this model - it will lay completely flat: th-cam.com/video/lvg90nNJo0g/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared&t=347 The XX models absolutely will not Flic-Flac, which I believe is down to the weight distribution. The Blast (with the heavy leading edge installed) is top heavy, and criminally easy to Flic-Flac. But the XX models have a more even weight distribution, making them impossible to flip over like that. I've found that Axle-like turns are possible with this model, but it is tricky to make them flat. It's something I'm still working on, but I believe the key is to first lay the kite out flat (as if floating), and then initiate the Axle. If you want an all-rounder with a high-skill ceiling that will keep you occupied for ages, I don't think you can go wrong with a XX Super Tarantula. The RX Super Spider might prove unruly to learn with, and it is geared primarily towards stronger winds.

    • @__revbox

      @@imcharlesincharge No problem! The Super Spider and Blast are very different. The Super Spider is built for strong winds, it retains a light wind feel even when the wind picks up. It doesn't float or glide as well as the models with more sail area, but it slides sideways and reverses better. It's a great kite for when you want a light feel in stronger winds (10-25 MPH). The Blast is like two kites in one, resulting from the two sets of leading edge spars included: With the "Heavy" leading edge, the Blast is fast, it pulls hard and it slides sideways better than the RX and XX models. It moves differently and is very much its own thing in this mode. It prefers large moves on longer lines, and it has a wide wind range (up to 25 MPH). Turns and stops feel heavy and deliberate, you really need to put some muscle into nailing sharp clock turns and stops. With the "Light" leading edge installed (up to 10 MPH), the Blast's handling changes. It feels lighter, turns and stops are sharper, and it glides and floats amazingly well. It feels more like a XX in this configuration, but with better sideways sliding. I prefer to fly on shorter lines in this configuration as the kite leans towards smaller, intricate moves, and 3D floats and glides at the edge of the wind window. If you want a good all-rounder that delivers the classic Revolution feel, I'd recommend the XX Super Tarantula (5-25 MPH). Unlike the RX Super Spider, the XX Super Tarantula maintains enough sail area to fly in light winds. I've flown this kite in next to no wind: th-cam.com/video/DjfhbHeuUAk/w-d-xo.html

    Good video. It is nice to see hands included in videos showing how you control the kite. It's useful (especially for beginners) to see the variation in hand posture like you have in the video, in your case handles differently when facing different directions. Different people have different motions. It's clear both from the hands and the shadows that you have fully body differences on right and left directional flight. For example 0:27, 0:30, 0:34, 0:42, 0:47, they're not just pointed different angles right versus left but show you have full posture differences that likely play to the strength of your dominant arm and hand. And the strong downward drive at 6:07, 6:25, and 6:40 shows which of your hands is dominant with big differences between them. Pilots favor different styles, some people focus on handle orientation keeping them vertical, some focus more on a 'boxer position' and less on handle orientation, some people spend a lot of time on the 'body work' part of flying, and some don't care how the pilot looks as long as the kites get to the right position in the sky. Lots of good ways to fly, thanks for sharing! /Edit: Removed a few words about some of the video description that no longer applies with the updated description text.

    • @__revbox
      @__revbox 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you very much for your detailed analysis, @bryanskiteflying, it is most appreciated. I've amended the description per your feedback. Yes, it is my hope that these POV videos will help illustrate the variation in handle position to beginners, as it plays such a key role. Ever since it was mentioned in this discussion I've been conscious of the differences between my right and left sides. I've got cubital tunnel syndrome which affects my left hand, and it seems like I'm subconsciously adapting my posture to compensate. It feels strange when I try to hold the handles symmetrically! I reckon I hold the left handle lower because my fourth and fifth digits are weak. I'm using my wrist and thumb for fine control of the left brake line, but on the right, I use my fourth and fifth digits.

    • @bryanskiteflying
      @bryanskiteflying 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've removed the sentence about the description text as it no longer applies with the edit. Good video, even so. How do you get the camera at chest height to stay that steady? I've tried a few ways to hold a gopro near there and it never turns out that well.

    • @__revbox
      @__revbox 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Cheers @@bryanskiteflying! I'm using a "PGYTECH CapLock Action Camera Neck Mount". I find that it provides a better view of the handles than the chest mount, but you need to be conscious that you can't turn your body much without changing where the camera is pointing.

    • @__revbox
      @__revbox 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey, MajestX23. Those two models are very different. The XX Super Tarantula is heavily vented, but it still has a wide wind range. I bought this one as a "high wind" option, but it quickly became my go-to kite. It only needs around 6 MPH of wind to fly, and can handle much stronger winds than the non-vented version. I prefer to fly it on lighter days; I'd say the "sweet spot" for this kite is 8-15 MPH - it feels perfect. As for the handling, the XX series are like the luxury cars of the range; they deliver the smoothest ride, are very precise, and they float like paper planes. Both vented models, the Tarantula and Super Tarantula, reverse and slide sideways better than the non-vented version. For me, the Tarantula is for the very lightest winds, and the Super Tarantula is more of a general workhorse. The RX Super Spider is *definitely* a strong wind kite. I would not consider flying it in less than around 10 MPH wind. It is even more drastically vented than the Super Tarantula, which makes its handling feel very light and sharp - it like having the mouse sensitivity turned up. It took a while before I could be precise with the Super Spider, at first, I was constantly overshooting turns and dive-stops. But I got used to the handling over time and grew to love it - becoming precise with this model makes flying the XX models feel like slow motion, it tightens up my game. While it doesn't glide as well, the extreme venting enables 3D moves in stronger winds. I've nailed 3D catches with the Super Spider in winds I have no business doing so in, and it can do flic-flacs (which the XX series absolutely refuse to do). In summary: The XX Super Tarantula will serve as a reliable workhorse, while the RX Super Spider is a little bonkers, and specifically for strong winds.

      Thanks a lot! Yeah, it's a shame there are no UK shops left. However, Kiteworld still have a store on eBay (kiteworldshop), they sell the Revolution range and are UK based.

    What a great move! Im curious what your recording setup is. It seems to be a chest mounted GoPro or something like that. Any details would be appreciated. I just discovered your channel last night. Its really great. Ive been an avid flyer since 96 when i got my first Rev while on vacation at the Outer Banks, N.C, USA. Been hooked ever since. I currently live on Kauai, Hawaii and as far as i can tell over 7 years, im basically the only land based kite flyer. Many kiter surfers around though. I currently fly a Rev Super Tarantula, Skyburner Fulcrum, Skyburner Aura and a Widowmaker. The deltas rarely get much flight time anymore though. I have never recorded myself, but seeing your excellent videos gives me the itch to want to try. Thanks for any thoughts. Cheers, Brian

      Great to hear from you Brian! I'm using a GoPro with a head mount for this video, and I use a chest mount for the videos where I show the handles. I've been having loads of problems with the GoPro, it often freezes and records audio only and I've lost more sessions than I've recorded. I've since bought a DJI Osmo and will start recording again soon. I first flew a Revolution back in the late '80s, but I could never afford one as a kid. I got back into the hobby after discovering the Revolution Kites TH-cam channel a few years ago and I'm having a great time.

    Hi there. I'm looking at getting a 4 line kite, after flying 2 line kites (Prism) for past 20 years. What's the learning curve like for the Blast? Was thinking of getting one of the Reflex models (or maybe a Supersonic), but the Blast looks pretty amazing, esp for lighter winds. Thoughts?

    • @__revbox
      @__revbox 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi @rocketsciencedesign. Thanks for asking. I think it comes down to your flying style and the wind conditions you usually find yourself in. Firstly, I would not recommend the Supersonic as your first quad-line kite - it sacrifices precision for speed and is quite jittery. You really have to work at getting precise movements with it, and I fear the learning curve will be steep. The Blast is far more precise than the Supersonic, but not as precise as a XX or RX model. It's like two kites in one because it comes with two sets of leading edge spars. With the "heavy" leading edge, the Blast loves to slide sideways, and can be flown in winds up to 20 MPH - it prefers big and bold moves on longer lines. With the "light" leading edge the kite can be flown in winds up to 10 MPH, and it trades its ability to slide sideways for lighter, more precise turns and stops. In light mode it flies like an approximation of a XX, preferring smaller, more delicate moves on shorter lines. The XX models are very stable, reliable and predictable - they are like luxury cars. The non-vented model is suited to lighter winds (up to 12 MPH), while the vented Tarantula and Super Tarantula shift the sweet spot and upper bound of the wind range upwards. You'd be forgiven for thinking that the vented XXs require strong wind to fly, but this is not the case; the XX Tarantula can be flown in next to nothing, and the XX Super Tarantula only needs a light breeze. The RX models are like sports cars, they trade the ultra smooth ride of the XX models for a lighter, more agile feel. Again, the sweet spot of the wind range shifts upwards as you add more venting, but I think the sweet spot is narrower with the RX range - they are more particular about it, but a joy when they are in it. Venting increases the upper bound of the wind range the more you add, and it also has a big impact on reverse flight performance. Adding more venting reduces the kite's tendency to flip over while reversing, enabling you to reverse faster and more smoothly. Also of note is that with more venting comes reduced braking; I find that I need to be more forceful with my stop commands when I fly the XX Super Tarantula or RX Super Spider. I keep changing my mind, but my favourites right now are: Strong wind - RX Super Spider Moderate wind - XX Super Tarantula Light wind - XX Tarantula If I could go back in time and choose my first Revolution again, it would be the XX Tarantula. This kite flies beautifully in light winds, can handle moderate winds, and feels more agile than the non-vented model. As my skills increased with the XX Tarantula, I would have then bought one of the fully vented models for stronger winds.

      @@__revbox thx for the detailed feedback. Think I will go for the blast since it comes with the 2 leading edge spars, plus being a kitesurfer I think I'd find the Blast more to my liking. Just have to find a retailer in the southern hemisphere that actually has them in stock!

    • @__revbox
      @__revbox ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers RSpills! If I was looking at it purely as a box-ticking exercise, I'd choose the Blast. This is because it flies well in light winds, has two modes of flight with its two leading edges, and it can handle stronger winds. However, in the strong wind situations I mostly find myself in, the Blast is best suited to flying on longer lines and cutting big shapes in the sky. I'm all about short lines and small, intricate moves - which the Tarantulas are better suited for.
