I shamefully barely know these pieces. I am glad you have introduced me to them here. I like they way they breathe. The identity you give each one is wonderful. By the way, I will always remember you talking about the motion of long oar strokes of a rowboat when we were working on op. 117 (that image was for the first material of #1).

Amazing. Such CRUNCH and satisfying crust in the rhythm and sound! Though I never was able to implement this principle to my satisfaction in my own playing, this performance exemplifies how much a feel like pulse and rhythm are the blood and breath of expression. So much respect for this performance.

Incredible. 1. The composition itself, being given entrance to and drawn deep into Beethoven's inexhaustible world, and 2 the gift of a recreation that opens the doors thereto. Thank you Daniel, for sharing your obvious love for this masterpiece. Deliriously exhausted, as very few performances affect me in this way. Bravo.

Ken Amada was a great teacher. He was the reason I enrolled at the University of Iowa from 1971-1979. He was like a dad to me. He took personal interest to me. I have many good memories. One competition we drove to Omaha, Nebraska together. He had confidence in me as a developing pianist. He always had something good to say of my playing, not matter how bad I played. Mr. Amada was the teacher God appointed me to study piano under. God used Mr. Amada's experience to make me the pianist I am today. There were great pianists who studied under Mr. Amada: James Marsh, Anita King, Randy Jones, Lydia Gatling, Robert Coopman, others who I remember first names: Bruce, Paul, Steve, and Richard. I enjoyed the competitions, but I did not like competing against fellow Hawkeyes. I'd rather do up against students from other schools and conservatories than my fellow TA's. Mr. Amada was great in what he did.

My favorite Schubert Sonata could not be played better. The beautiful calm of the opening chords is punctuated by the perfectly timed and sounded quicker chords.....just a little and just enough to suggest this disturbance is a hint of the great drama to follow.

The nobility and depth of the playing in op.2/2 largo is absolutely disarming. The kind of Beethoven playing that makes you look to a kind of beauty that's right there and somehow out of reach. I'm not describing it well, but this is some beautiful playing.

I always find it difficult using mere words to praise or describe Daniel's deep connection to Beethoven's 'world'. Poetry, fire, excitement, resignation, humor - Beethoven has it all, and Daniel opens the hidden door so that we can be transported by Beethoven's passion. Bravo!
