E se baba mi, Eko oni baje ooo! My mouth was wide open when I saw the movie in which Eyo brought out a gun and shot someone, I was very disappointed. I said exactly what you have said in this video; Eyo is now bastardized! The same thing goes for the Egungun; the inside of an "Igbale" is now shown on TH-cam and the "Eku" of Egunguns are now shown inside the Igbale being consulted and all the right observed on national TV. Egunguns are "araorun kenken" but this present generation has brought it to disrepute including the Eyo. The Eyo was brought out arbitrarily on the birthday of a rich Nigerian who is not even an indigene of Lagos and I think that is wrong. All of this liberalism is what gave some youths the impetus to go into the palace of the Oba during endSARS to carry the "Opa Oba" and started messing up on the street. When we were growing up on the Island in the early 70s, it took at least 3 months like you said before the Eyo came out. I remember the "Eyo Oru"'; we only heard their staffs being used to stamp the ground in the middle of the night and we were told as little ones then not to peep . Then, about a week before the Eyo came out, there were processions, I lived around catholic mission street close to the house of "Agbabiaka" the leader of the "Eyo Agere" at that time. Elderly Eyos come out with just wrappers around their waists, going to all the chiefs and "Agboles" to offer prayers and do necessary rights. The night before the Eyo festival itself, there were night vigils held at each Eyo house. During this time, rights are performed, consultations are made and all the procedures are followed before the Eyos come out in the morning. Our liberalism as Lagosians even allowed non-Lagos indigenes at one time to participate in the Eyo festival and it resulted in disastrous outings that claimed lives due to unnecessary clashes. In the days of "Ake UTC", it was a mess. I totally agree with you as a genuine indigene of Lagos, that, Eyo should henceforth cease to appear randomly because some people want it; it is our tradition and heritage and must never be brought to disrepute again!
