24 HOURS WITH A NEWBORN AS A FTM | postpartum challenges + finding our rhythm
Spend a FULL 24 HOURS with me as a first time mom. In this video, I share about my new postpartum body (and the challenges that come with that), as well as what our new routine looks like as a family of 3. Plus, the most unexpected thing happened on our way home from the doctor.
SCRIPTURE REFERENCED IN TODAY'S VIDEO:
Colossians 3:12-14
"Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity."
Luke 8:43-48
"And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her. She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped. “Who touched me?” Jesus asked. When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you.” But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.” Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”"

GIRL! My labor as a first time mom was 35 hours! (although I was induced) I just shared my own birth story for my second birth and finally had spontaneous labor and an unmedicated delivery. It was 29 hours of early labor but only 1 hour of active and transition before 4 minutes of pushing. Regardless, our Heavenly Father is always with us ❤

Celebrating Mother’s Day is an answered prayer. From my tear soaked journal to hours and hours spent in the secret place, He is El Roi (the God who sees me). To all the mamas out there - what a gift! A miraculous, glorious, tremendously wonderful gift. It is not by accident that you are the mother to your baby(ies). It is a work of God. To all the women longing to be mamas - don’t stop praying, declaring, and believing in the truth that God is good, God is close. God SEES you. God HEARS you. God KNOWS you. Keep seeking. Keep pouring your soul out to him. It is not in vein! To my son - thank you for being the sweet and snuggly boy you are. I love discovering who God made you to be. May you forever feel safe in my arms and smile at my voice.

It’s hard to believe two months (and about a week ago), we met earth-side. Before meeting you in person, I was well acquainted with your rib kicks, hiccups + nighttime summersaults, your heartbeat and the way you always kicked the doppler during our appointments, the way you loved to snuggle your face into my womb so deep that the ultrasound techs made me dance and move to shift you not just once or twice, but three separate times. From the moment I first laid eyes on you, you were 8 weeks old. Your hands and feet were moving, almost like you were waving hello to us. From the moment I knew you existed, I was in love and would do anything to protect you. This is still true. Beyond all of what I knew and felt, God knew you (and continues to know you) more. He formed you, sustained you, and created you to become our sweet snuggly boy. As I think back to meeting you for the first time on your birthday, I am reminded of the miraculous work our Creator did to make a masterpiece like you.

It blows my mind how much God has blessed us. My biggest dream has always been to become a mom. And that dream turned into a desire that only burned stronger and stronger as the years went on. When I found out I was pregnant, my only response was the give praise to God, in tearful prayers and worship. God really is so good. Maybe you are having a hard time believing that truth. I know that I have been there (and probably will be in that boat again one day). There is ALWAYS something to be thankful for. God is ALWAYS doing something good… because He can’t be anything else. Jesus took on the death we deserved just so that one day we would know and love him. Think about that. That we one day would. There was hope and goodness and redemption hung on the despair and torture of a cross. The crucifixion didn’t look good. It didn’t feel good. But it was good. What’s something good you are praising God for? Let me know in the comments :) Let’s believe in the good this season, together.

Even Jesus woke hours before others to go be with the Father and start his day slowly and gently. Establishing a morning routine mirrored after Jesus has been an unexpected challenge for me since graduating college. I went from running out the door with a granola bar and surviving off of coffee all day to feeling grumpy and sluggish and not in tune with the Holy Spirit if I don’t eat a full meal… and that feeling has only grown since being pregnant. All of this, plus the desire and conviction to be a mama who reads her Bible every day, started my journey of figuring out how to set up my mornings rightly so I can live the rest of my day righteously. 6 am - wake up and pray (before getting out of bed) thanksgiving to the Lord. Sometimes this is followed by scrolling on my phone… progress over perfection here! 6:15 am - up and out of bed to the bathroom to wash my face and do some quick self care. 6:30 am - use the time my coffee is brewing to make breakfast. 6:35 am - migrate to the living room to enjoy my breakfast, and sip coffee while I dive into the Word. Sometimes I just read a short devo (esp. on the mornings when I sleep in) but often I take time to read through passages in my Bible and pray over the coming day. 6:55 am - make my bed! Feels so good to have one productive thing done each morning. 7 am - get dressed and prepare my lunch. 7:30 am - out the door and off to work. Maybe this seems simple or even silly to share, but taking time to trial and error different aspects on my morning has helped set me up for success. And I’ll be the first to admit - I am far from perfect at this routine. Even just this morning I slept in until 6:30. But the key is to learn what works for you, give yourself lots and lots of grace, and pivot when necessary. But the goal is this: to start each morning with a cheerful heart, praise God for what’s to come, and enter the stresses, burdens, and interruptions of your day with a full cup. What do your mornings look like? Let me know in the comments ☕️✨☀️ #foryoupage #fyp #christian #faith #morning #morningroutine

Taking 3 mins (really - only 3 minutes!!) to pray and seek the Lord are some of the sweetest times in my day. I pray for my day, my husband’s day, my friends, my family. I ask for help to be more like Jesus, and to show Jesus to those around me. And I declare truth over myself, over my baby, over my marriage. It doesn’t look aesthetic. It’s often in the shower, while I’m washing dishes, on my way to work while stuck in traffic, sometimes even between meetings. Prayer is simply this: talking to God. So releasing the pressure of having it be this beautiful word-smithed statement in an aesthetic space has helped me to pray more, pray longer even!! If you are looking for a prayer to pray, I typed out a template that I use often to seek the Lord. Sometimes I pray just this. Other times I add in specific requests or repentance. The prayer is: “Lord God, thank you for this day. Thank you for waking me up, putting breath in my lungs, and washing me with new mercies. As I enter a day full of to-dos, lists, projects, and hurried-ness, I ask that the Holy Spirit would fill me. Would I see moments of rest and take them. Would I find pauses of stillness and listen. Would I show others your glory by walking in a manner that’s worthy of the calling Christ Jesus. Yesterday, I fell short in so many ways. I bring my sins to you Father and thank you that you forgive, you restore, and you renew. Would you make me more like you today, Jesus. Thank you for convicting me in grace and truth, and loving me through my brokenness. Equip me, O God to see your children, to love them well, and to bless them. Help me to fix my eyes on you, despite all that may come. You are my firm foundation, and when the ground begins to shake, help remind me that you are with me. You are in control. Fear and anxiety must bow to your name. The enemy must flee in your presence. You, Jesus, are the King. In Jesus’ name, I pray… Amen.” What does your prayer time look like each day? #foryou #fyp #explore #explorepage #prayer #coffee #nationalcoffeeday #morningmotivation #morningroutine #christian #faith

Did you know that reading the Bible 5 days a week causes positive outcomes? While it’s great to read your Bible as you’re able, it’s not just enough to read it randomly or every few days. The most progress is seen when you get into the Word for 5 days each week. What a sobering statistic. Getting into the rhythm of reading scripture has always been difficult for me. I love the Bible but was struggling in my seasons of rushing from one thing to the next. Eventually, I was able to find small, 5-minute ways to incorporate God’s word into my family life. None of these have felt greater than reading His Word myself, but all have been helpful in fixing my eyes towards Jesus. 1. SHORT ON TIME? Listen to the @mymorningdevo podcast each day on your way to work. Each episode is 5-7 mins, reads through scripture, and incorporates prayer. 2. FEELING STUCK?? Read the New Morning Mercies devotional written by Paul David Tripp. These once a day devos are short, full of grace, and provide scripture for continued reading. (Another great devo for this is Every Moment Holy) 3. DON’T KNOW WHERE TO START? The YouVersion Bible App has sooooo many resources! You can start with a verse of the day, or find a tailored Bible plan that suits your season and commitment. This is great if you need accountability because you can turn on notification reminders :) 4. WANT SOMETHING SIMPLE? Read through the Psalms and Proverbs. There books were written in short, easy to meditate on verses. Want to challenge yourself? Read through Isaiah for a similar verse structure - but with more of a story. 5. PREFER TO LISTEN? YouVersion is great of ethos as well, and of course any audio book source will have the Bible. A simple one is to listen to The Daily Bible podcast as they read through Acripture. You also can read through the Bible with @thedailygraceco podcast, Devotionals for the Busy podcast, Bible at Bedtime podcast, and so many others. Whatever if holding you back from getting into God’s Word is nothing compared to the breakthrough and revelation that comes from His Word.

I’ve been seeing the quote go around that says “wash the dish because you love the person who will use it next”… and while I don’t disagree with that, I think that there is a higher purpose for us when it comes to taking care of our surroundings. yes, serving others is HUGE and Biblical, but that’s not the extent of what God asks of us. I’ve been reflecting a lot of the story of Cain and Abel, where one gave his best offering to the Lord and the other… well, just didn’t. Or how David gave his whole being to the Lord, even when he was deep in sin and despair. Or how Hannah prayed so fervently towards the Lord people thought she was drunk! That’s giving your best to the Lord - and sometimes it’s messy. Don’t hear me wrong, there is a time to be Mary and sit with Jesus, leaving the to-do list behind. After all, all of our treasure is in heaven!! But we also should not forget that stewardship of our belongings, blessings, time, and money is also a way of the Lord. We should serve because we love those around us. But we also should serve because we love God and are thankful for his good gifts (yes, even the good gift of dirty dishes because it means full bellies). So let’s worship God by giving him our best offering today! Maybe for you it’s joyfully cleaning, patiently waiting for your toddler to get their sentence out, fervently praying, or lifting your hands in praise in your cubicle at work because God has provided for you.

Being pregnant at Christmastime has changed my whole perspective of the Christmas story. Birth… as a virgin… in a manger?!? Mary - how did you do that? Only God! “Silent night” - silent in reverence, sure… but loud in pain, disbelief, and the undeniable hard work of child bearing and labor. Only God!! Adoration for a sweet, tender and mild baby… yet the reality that He has all authority and power. That He is the savior. ONLY GOD! Oh Jesus, thank you for the gift of pregnancy. Thank you for the gift of welcoming a sweet boy soon. Thank you for the gift of YOU. You really left your throne to be born as a messy and vulnerable baby. The weary world surely rejoices!!!

As I wait for baby, I’ve been trying to distract myself by honing in on new & beloved skills, like perfecting at home lattes, learning the ins and outs of heatless curls, and using my free time to be creative or read. This has been my go-to latte for the past few days and it’s the most delicious! Its so simple, yet packs a bunch of warm flavors. I learned how to make this from an amazing creator, @ambriadrinkscoffee . Her account shares the behind the scenes of lattes and coffee making, and has helped me transform my at home latte game… now I just need to work on the latte art portion 😉🤦🏼‍♀️

When your long distance bestie meets your baby, makes your bed, takes newborn pictures, and packs your freezer full of nutritious foods… a weekend I will cherish forever. We have seen more than ever the true reality of having a village. From generous donations, friends who do your laundry, and meal trains, we have been blessed beyond all measure. All glory be to Christ, who without him, we would have nothing.

I went from: + being on a stage leading our church in worship to quieting mouthing the words to soft songs of praise. + sleeping 8 or more hours each night to rejoicing for 3. + freely going to the store because I wanted to find new treasures to being nap trapped on the couch while desperately trying to hold my bladder. That’s my life now. And I’m not ungrateful. I love that the Lord has called me to raise a son, and that in this season, everything can be soft and slow. 🤍 I love that I get to make tea, clean bottles and pump parts, sway to Rita Springer’s anointed voice, and try to keep the crumbs of my chocolate chip cookie off my baby’s head. 🤍 I love that each time I look at my son’s face it reminds me of answered prayers and the pure goodness of God. 🤍 I love that my routine is different now… that the mundane is holy (which, for the record, it always has been holy but I’m truly just now waking up to see it!!). -- The Lord met me today in the sweetest way. In a moment of quiet worship, He gave me courage to bring to him a recent burden and grief. We traded yokes this afternoon, and I am left amazed by the access we have to God… LIKE JESUS HIMSELF is with us. EMMANUEL! (Matt. 11:28-30; Matt. 1:23) For full transparency, my prayer has not been answered yet… but communion with the Lord is worth it, even if I never see breakthrough. - Is it worth the same for you? If not, that’s an ok place to start. I’ve been there. And probably will be there again. But what if today you took 5 minutes to bring to the Lord your heart and then…. wait?? Do nothing but worship. Do nothing but lift His name. Is there something you need to trade with Jesus? He assures us that his yoke is EASY. We can approach him with confidence (Heb. 4:16)… so step forward into his presence and offer it up before him. My prayer for us today is that we would find rest in who God is and in the knowledge that He truly cares for us. He truly delights in us. He truly gives good things… we need only to ask. (James 4:2-3)

we’ve all heard the phrase “when a child is born, a mother is too”… but an often overlooked aspect of having a baby is watching your husband turn into a father. from being the sweet and romantic man you fell in love with, to being the leader of your marriage, and provider for your home, and now to witness him lavishing love onto your child… it’s a gift I thank God for. Joe truly is the most wonderful dad - late night feedings, rocking our sweet baby to bed for hours on end so I can get extra sleep, researching anything and everything during pregnancy and in postpartum, and every dirty diaper in between. you talk and dream about becoming parents and the way you’ll raise your kids some day… but it’s another thing to watch your husband transform into a loving, caring, and thoughtful father. it makes me all the more thankful that Joe not only had a great father himself, but also knows the greatest Father, our God, so intimately. he gets to share the beauty of communion with Jesus to our son. what a beautiful and wonderful and extraordinary gift.

I was tossing and turning each and every night, waking up fearful and panicked over every small cramp, stretch, and new symptom. I would cry out to God in protection over my baby, and each time God would comfort me. But one night I started to bleed. And although it was light, the fear was taking over my entire being. I couldn’t focus on anything other than worst case scenarios. I was letting the fear win. But then the wise words of my husband in prayer led me right back to the truth of our God: “God you are the author life. And we trust that you are growing this life. You’ve given us no reason to not trust you, to not trust your plan. Thank you for giving us this life” That was the reminder that I needed. The shift in my mindset. I am not pleading with God - I am partnered with Him. He already gave us this life to grow and love, and He is in control. I can only lean back in His loving arms and be still. What truth is God speaking to you in this season? #foryoupage #fyp #pregnancy #pregnant #christian #faith
