2021 Motobecane HAL e29'er MTB e-bike from bikesdirect.com unboxing and first impressions.
If you are not a diehard mountain biker it can be difficult to make decisions on this kind of purchase. What do you actually get for your money? How much bike do I need for the riding I do? Will this bike last? How do I know if this bike is going to fit me? Do I need an e-bike? I hope this video and the ride review video soon to come help will help answer some of these questions. I don't get anything from bikesdirect.com for these videos. I like some of there products and I love mountain biking. Check out some of my other videos to see if MTB is right for you and what to consider.
Thanks, enjoy and please subscribe and "like" generously.

    I've heard that one of the big ways they're able to sell these bikes for so little is that they just buy rights for pennies on the dollar to old designs from big names that they've stopped making for long enough they're not worried about losing sales of newer stuff. So they don't spend anything on R&D and are using proven designs that are probably 3-5 years behind the most current trends but being built by the same folks that built them for whatever big-name brand they originally built them for. I really appreciate the video, feedback from folks that have lived with one of these bikes for a while is scarce.

    I bought one 2 years ago and it has been awesome. Not sure what people consider a better frame, this thing is tight, agile, very responsive, and very precise. Motobecane has been around for 50 years. The 1501 rims and the 240 hubs are great. Just 8 months ago I bought the CF version. It has the Lyrik 160 fork, and the large weighed 27.4 pounds out of the box. With my tool bag and modifications it now weighs 28.5. It's more slack at 65 degrees and handles down hill knarl really well. I've wiped out both bikes at least a dozen times combined, yes, I'm very reckless, and both are bullet proof. Bent brakes, derailleur, and scratches and dings all over the bikes. They've handled it all. The bike for buck is the best deal I've seen.

    Its hilarious how bad the pedals are on every bike you get from bikes direct. You buy a $1k bike from them, and you get 2.5" kids bear trap pedals. I mean come on. The same pedals you get with this bike are the same pedals you get with the Gravity FSX 1.0.

    • @davib7534
      @davib7534 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well yeah, I mean heck bikes don't come with pedals at all these days. I think they just throw in those Cheapos so no one will complain that it didn't have pedals

    • @madmax2069
      @madmax2069 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@davib7534 I would just say knock a little off the price and make sure everyone knows that it doesn't come with pedals. The 2.5" bear trap pedals that it comes with do make the bike uncomfortable to ride after a while when you have big feet. They made it feel like I was pedalling with broken pedals. Heck even those $14 pedals at WM are better.

    That is not how sealant works. If something punctures your tire you can bet it'll picture your "inner liner". The point is that the sealant creates a plug in the puncture and stops it from leaking air.

    • @acat6821
      @acat6821 ปีที่แล้ว

      But it does create a liner, most tyres have micropores and the sealant is required to stop the tyre leaking air, if you use a tubeless setup without sealant youl lose pressure over a few days, the sealant is deaigned to coat the whole inside of the rim and tyre but also have liquid form available for holes

      @@hatrix11 I would def suggest the HAL 5.5 to anyone. great beginners or intermediate FS bike. I previously rode an old Trek 4300 and 4900 hardtail. to ride real trails I had to outfit my 4300 with a hydraulic disk front brake. this is an awesome bike for a great deal.

      @@hatrix11 oh yeah, it's holding up. I got the Hal recon in august and have risen it on pretty aggressive trails probably 3 or 4 days a week since getting it set up. the fork is fantastic for the $$, and I love the single valve with the +/- chambers. it makes self-maintenance a much easier hassle. also, I wasn't completely honest- i actually ordered the Hal 5.5 recon on a preorder special so it was only 1399$ but I had to wait 4+ months for it. still worth saving 500$🤑

    They don't shave corners. They bring partially-assembled bikes direct from factories in Taiwan and China in containers to a warehouse in Texas and then ship them direct to customers. They do very little advertising, don't have the overhead of a normal retail bike shop or even online bike shop, and just ship direct to customers. That's how they do it. There's no secret here - they just cut out the normal overhead, sacrifice a little margin in return for volume, and can't trade on brand cachet. The bikes are not cutting edge, but just fine.

    Great review, thanks for the follow up it helps to know a bike is lasting. After a couple years, how do you feel about the build of the frame? Does the frame have the quality to be built on over the next 10 years? I'm not a jumper, but will do drops, heavy root/rocks, and my extra weight punishes a suspension. I don't need a name brand, just a frame that performs well, will last, and be a ton of fun to ride. Thx

If you want a true e-bike MTB with electric pedal assist (no throttle) and not break the bank, this bike is well worth considering. You will be hard pressed to find a better deal.

    7:10 Is it possible that the manufacturers like to measure height from the center of the BB while you are measuring from the bottom of the BB? I would think they would do this to produce better sounding numbers. That's my first thought. The other thoughts are different tires and maybe differing suspension settings to explain the "estimated" part. So if you're measuring around 320 on most regular MTBs vs slightly over 300 for the eMTB, I think that's fine. Hardcore MTB "purists" aren't purchasing an ebike so for the rest of us non-hardcore, that 20mm will never be noticed. I'm 51 now and definitely don't ride like I used to when I was 22. Another note, I've been living in Phoenix since 1989 (when I was 18) and I only know MTB riding here, so the pedal-strike issue is simply something I've always had to contend with. I know nothing else. Interesting thoughts that you have on it. Some things I hadn't thought of. I also didn't even know it was called "stutter step", but it makes sense.
