This is the second video from the Skirball Fire of December 2017. It was shot with an old GoPro Hero 3+. It's not exactly hi-def but hopefully gives you a feel for what it's like flying on a fire which is threatening homes. You can hear radio traffic from 3 different sources; Van Nuys control tower, other helicopters, and the firefighters on the ground. You will also see coordination between the pilot and the firefighters on the heli-spot who are responsible for reloading the copters with water as well as refueling them. It's a dynamic environment to say the least! I was a firefighter for almost 39 years, with the last 15 being a pilot. I enjoyed every minute of it!

Love your plane shot! Can I feature it in my project with credit? Thanks!
@@flightmode254 what kind of project?
Is it possible for the engine to stall if there is too much smoke?
I realize it!
Outstanding job. Reminds me of when I was a Dustoff crew member, Fort Ord in the Los Padres National Forest.
I would not have let those dogs on board if I were the pilot. Particularly the Mastiff.
Dogs are family to people. Firefighters rescue all.
@@joeloveland6283 Not worth the life of everyone on board. It's a liability. It's behavior is unknown to them.
Good lesson: If you want to get rescued leave room for the helicopter to land. It needs more space than your van.
was this under NVGs?
@@staymad7206 Yes
The level of calm and ease these guys have working together is really cool to see
@@chihigonazo Thanks!
Three people and two very large dogs!! Well done.guys!!
5 years later and I still find myself coming back to this video often due to how impressive it is. I wonder if you'd ever consider posting the full video from this day? from when you first took off till when you landed to drop everyone off?
I'll think about it. Need to get some better editing software and figure out how to use it.
@@pilotdave8421 Awesome! well davinci resolve is free and so is Imovie if you have an apple computer. You could even upload the full unedited clip and I don't think anyone would complain
Wow.
How these guys are so composed is beyond me. Extending bingo is very dangerous they acted like it was just another day In The park.
SICK landing job!!
Extraordinary
Was the aircraft a Firehawk?
No
Tom, the pilot in the other helicopter sounds like the air boss at the Yarnell Hill Fire in Arizona where the 19 Granite Mountain HotShots died. The one asking don't hollar into the mic...sounds like granite mountain has a problem
Surprised the helo can fly carrying those balls of steel
Fantastic flying, Dave! I snapped some photos of an LAFD ship making drops the morning the fire jumped the 101 near Chesebro road and the 101. Must've been an hour or so after sunrise. They were published in Air Attack Magazine. I'll send you a copy if you want it!
I have watched this occasionally since back then, and I get just as astonished every time. Brilliant work, and brilliant film too!
Thank You! I am retired from the Fire Department now, but still fire fighting now flying on USFS & CalFire contracts. This was a great rescue that I was glad to be able to perform!
this is incredible footage!
What type of helicopter is this?
AW-139
Much respect ❤🇯🇲🫡🫡
Congrats! Very professional working!
Great video, you're living the dream!
Great teamwork. When 2 cool headed pilots work together there are precious few places you cant put a bird down
Thank You!
Best of the best !
badass!!
Man hats off to you guys! I love how you guys work through the problem and accept input from others. You both contribute to how to solve the problem instead of saying im the pilot and i say what we do. No ego or anything getting in the way
Thanks!
I havnt found an actual air rescue on TH-cam even close as good as this one!
Thank You!
excellent communication
Thanks!
Why don't they just use ropes/ gear used by climbers connected to rope so there is no risk of falling, would eliminate the problem of having to land
It would take too long to get the people hooked up. Also they can hoist a small number (1 at a time plus the medic) for a short haul, but it may be too much of a distance to pick them carry them. And they had a dog.
And we weren't configured for a hoist And the rest of our fleet had just been dispatched to a new fire in Griffith Park.
Helicopters are one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century
LA’s Best!!! Pilot Dave makes it look easy
These are awesome
More proof that when your told to evacuate, don't try to stay behind
Strong work, pilot Dave.
This why helicopters freak me out..always burning thru fuel
They have a good range and utility, but it uses a lot of energy to run the rotor system, especially in hover and lift off.
Why didn't they just radio them to move some vehicles.
No one that can move the vehicles were there.
My respects to all of our first responders
Thanks Angie!
Leave No Dog Behind, EVER! Bravo! Thanks to all Life Savers.
Badass! Good job.
Thanks!
Who are these pilots ! Did they get the keys to the city ?
No but we did get to ride on the Budweiser wagon in the 2019 Rose Parade. That was fun!
@@pilotdave8421 that’s awesome! I live in the Woolsey fire area. Thank you for your service to our community.
Perfect job guys! Love to see your teamwork!
Thank You
