Such an amazing talent. The press/media were so unnecessarily cruel. Thank goodness his family were strong, and there for each other. RIP John Curry. May your legacy and inspiration live on.
Wanted to know little more about the man while reading his marine Venus book. This is quite a find.
Interesting that the statutory retirement age is *still* 60 for men, 55 for women.
Interesting. What night of the week was this originally broadcast, and what time?
Hi, the twelve part series was broadcast weekly from Monday 13th February 1984 on Channel 4 at 9pm.
@@laurence.williamson Thanks. Channel 4 really was very good for the first 10 or 15 years.
Darren died of heroin overdose aged 31.
I remember this very well from the early 1970s shown around 6 o clock on BBC1....beneath my feet begins to crumble....he was no Donny Osmond talent and Ricky Wilde ended up backing his sister Kim Wilde....who remembers the The James Boys?
Ir was actually 8:10 on BBC2
@@davidrayner9376 it was Repeated on BBC1 .....😎
Merci...

That was incredible viewing. 90 minutes feeling like 10!
Thanks, that's a great compliment! It's one of the best films I have edited in recent years.
And I like the Musik very , very much !.
And they stone widows to death for having a boyfriend.
@25:10 heartbreaking. He could have accomplished so much more, but for the homophobic press.
Having had many many holidays in Greece over the years i have such a love for the country and the people and having watched the Durrell's on itv this has brought it all together just wonderful Thanks for uploading it Yamas🍻
I am glad you enjoyed it!
It feels very incredible to find something like this after so many years. This is a piece of great history and my deep respect for the author continues to grow. Thanks for sharing!
Thankyou.
Beautiful skater, sad life. I'm quite emotional right now.
I don't think his skating is effeminate. It takes incredible strength, energy and control. He's very balletic but effeminate? Yeah maybe if you can't tell the movements of ballerinos from those of ballerinas. I think it was his private life, his sexual orientation that they were picking on. I find Hanyu Yuzuru effeminate though. Graceful but so much more willowy.
Thku for this The Tay is my most favourite of all Scotlands Loch and River I've many many memories from today back to the 80s...love it T H A N K Y O U ..........💚💛💚💛💚💛💚
Want to get back to Melegalas 😍
The Tay, the Tay the silvery Tay it flows through Dundee every day. lol. McGonical
I dated a British ice dancer in the 80's..and ballet was very much a huge part of his skating training.. which was of course down to John Curry's positive influence on the sport, he raised the bar like no other.
I remember seeing John Curry skating in the summer of 1977. His ice show was at the Palladium Theater and one of his numbers was the legend of Icarus. His skating was so memorable.
Anyone know where I'd find a copy of part 2 re: Alexandria?
His skating was on a different level. Every performance left you with such strong emotions. Beauty in motion
Just brilliant to watch
Thank you, thank you, 100 times thank you for uploading these. This documentary influenced the course of y life, and I am so pleased to be able to watch the episodes again.
I used to watch this on PBS as a kid
22:46 the part I always remember, a great documentary, one of my favourites
Dedication, determination of this wonderful dancer and skater is inspirational. I love how he went to work on his mental approach, when he was fearful of falling for a while, and overcame it. He had enormous courage and not so much ambition, but a calling. The dedication he gave to accomplish his artform and breaking through nerves is just extraordinary. RIP John Curry.
Greek religion preach that animals have no soul I bet Gerald wouldn’t like that. You never talk about your mother and brothers and sister. Or Spiros 🤷♀️
This is a super fun film. Well worth a watch
It disgusts me beyond words that the press lambasted Curry over his sexuality. How low class. How repulsive.
That ‘joke’ about the fairy at John’s expense was utterly cruel.
A mesmerising and sublime combination of ballet and ice skating and a phenomenal artist.
So grossly improvised it’s like a different country from what China is now.
This documentary exerted huge impacts on Chinese TV documentary in the end of the 1980s.
As an American skating fan, I was totally mesmerized by John's skating. May his soul rest in peace.
43 min pérennité....hmmm , hard to find a healer in Greece, very hard. The old ways of medecine have all but disappeared. The jabs sold well there, people won over by big pharma. Very sad.
glad i got to see this side of durrell as i didnt enjoy his quartet that much do to the terrible images and obscenity
Lovely seeing Pat Dodd on here, my first coach ❤
Probably the greatest skater ever. I remember going to The Cambridge Theatre to see his show. Never forgot it!
The one and only.he was my lover.never to forget .life will go on but you are still with me.Edward Arckless ex Royal Oper Ballet Covent Garden London.
love this
there's a great documentary on netflix
@@lindahardy8234what’s the documentary called?
The Real John Curry is one to watch. The Ice King is the other
As a little girl in 1976 I was mesmerized by John's performance at the Olympics and followed him afterwards - captivated by his beautiful performances. As a student in Nottingham in 1983 or 84 helping out at the Theatre met him very briefly ...he was appearing in 'As you Like it' then I think, but had also done 'A Midsummer Nights Dream.'. It was a sad loss, because I feel sure he would have done so much more in Theatre.
I was enthralled by this superb documentary back in the day, and it's even more interesting to watch it again now, with a historical perspective. Thank you so much for uploading Near Miss, I've been been looking for a copy for years.
Absolutely disgusting and vile treatment of animals - awful
Thank you for uploading this! As a fan of Yuzuru Hanyu I very much appreciate John Curry’s beautiful skating style.
Indeed. Those 2 - Hanyo and Curry are what magic is made of.
@@MrRight1000I agree with you 100%
A favourite documentary ever, of a dear interest, closely held since back in time, so so so grand watching here, now THANKS SO MUCH! Dave Schoen ATC. New York ATC. Doesn't get better.
Thanks Dave. It was a particularly well shot documentary and one that I was most proud of working on.

His daughter committed suicide
Hi Jane, that's correct. Sappho Durrell came along to the screening of this film when it was finished. There were only 5 or 6 of us at the screening. She was very quiet throughout and seemed shy. Her life had been troubled and after she died letters came to light that indicated that the relationship she had with her father had been particularly difficult - to put it mildly.
Thankyou
