This channel is a novice effort at documenting the randomness of my world. I enjoy cemeteries, day hikes, personal experiences, and of course, my grandkids. I hope you find something that teaches you something, something that surprises you, or something that makes you smile a little. I've learned a lot in life, but nothing more important than this...in 100 years, the world will be doing fine without you or me.

Deer Lick, KY Forgotten Cemeteries
มุมมอง 3695 หลายเดือนก่อน
Although I'd been told about these cemeteries, I had never visited them, and I would've never located them without my buddy, Lowell. Deer Lick is a settlement area located in Clay County and along the Laurel County border. except for the occasional hunter passing by, these cemeteries are rarely visited or seen.

Brown County Music Center in Nashville, Indiana, is a great facility that seats a little over 2K. For a small rural county of 16K people, this facility is one to be proud of. Toto's latest incarnation is a who's who of fantastic musicians in a perfect set of song selections. Currently out with Journey, the band filled a still date enroute to Wisconsin.

Sublimity Springs - Laurel Co KY

The area along the Rockcastle River, known as Sublimity Springs, was once a bustling, thriving place that welcomed travelers to the healing waters and serenity of the forest. From the mid 1830s until the early 1920s, the resorts existed. The Old Sublimity Bridge became a crossing point for those traveling from London to Mt Victory, White Lily, Somerset, and points westward.

My Grandmother was Minerva Ethel Johnson Wyatt was the only Sister of The Johnson Willie, Henry. Earl and Luther Johnson.
He was friends with and supported by Harland "Colonel" Sanders who would take girls home with him to "work" in his home. Lot of stories about Sanders too with his connections to the Galilean Children's Home, he paid for Vogel's defense after he was arrested. Vogel got busted again in Florida if I remember correctly but Sanders didn't help him out the second time. Unfortunately most of the people who were alive back then are gone now and the stories never really got out of Corbin.
The real Dumas Walker ran a store in moss Tennessee I met Richard of the Kentucky headhunters and talked to him about it. It’s known as moss package store today.
Nice work! Mr. Phelps, what is the height you set the Grave Marker at? It sits at Ground level, is that the standard for the Cemetery? Mowers concern me. Also, did you have permission from the Cemetery to do this? Either way, nice job! Thank you for the demonstration. #rvgminc
@RVGMInc I sat the stone just above ground level, trying to be mindful of mowing. No, I did not get permission from the cemetery. I figure nobody cared that it was sinking, so who'd dare care for it to be fixed. My efforts are endorsed by the county government in case anyone asks questions. Thanks for watching.
@@doug3959 Thank you for the work you do. I generally take the position like you, see something, do something. I find great sadness when good things are stopped by other’s bureaucracy . Well done good and faithful servant! Peace. #rvgminc
Thank you for posting this. My fifth great Grandfather, AbrahamHaptonstall was the man that carried Hancock and tried to take the bullet out .
@@curtishaptonstall7810 I think the local historical groups need to step up their game to recognize this site and the story surrounding it.
Are you related to the Butler County, KY Phelps'?
I have no idea.
In my opinion, I feel like the old road should have never been removed. To me, it was a very interesting part of history that should have been left as it was when it was closed. In time, nature would have taken it back over without human assistance. My thoughts are what would need to be done if something catastrophic was to happen to the tunnel? Would they cut the old 25E back out? I've always heard Tennessee is on a major faultline. Whst would happen if we had a catastrophic earthquake? Could the tunnel withstand that kind of stress? I think it's something that should be thought about. I think it should have been thought about before they removed the old road.
Good points. I guess the National Park Service only thought about one vision. In the interest of public safety, your idea is valid. As I walked along, I felt the desire to see some of the old road bed for old times sake, but as you point out, keeping a backup corridor should have been considered.
Brilliant! Thanks Mr Phelps!
Does anyone know where I might find the film "Shelter In The Cumberlands" that was made at the Galilean home in 1951 by Gospel Films, Inc.?
I wasn't aware of that film. Besides the Library of Congress, I wouldn't know.
@@doug3959 Thanks anyway!
@Mac-zs3ep other options might be archives departments at University of Cumberlands, Berea College, EKU, etc.
@@doug3959 Thanks for the suggestions, but I've tried those places, as well as various libraries and historical societies in Corbin, Whitley Co, and the state of KY. Also Billy Graham Assoc., Southern Baptist Convention, etc. Anyway, if you hear anything, please let me know!
@@Mac-zs3ep I'm on the board at Laurel Historical. I'd never heard of this film and hope you can find it. Please share if you do.
I was born and raised in the area. I still live here today
Incredible how one man can alter the course of history for so many people.
Great band
Ruby crook was my great grandmother
Did you ever hear anything about this story from her, your parent or grandparent?
@@doug3959i never got to meet great grandma ruby. She passed before I was born but her son, my grandpa told me the story and showed me newspaper clippings on it.
I’m a lifelong Toto fan and saw this same tour in Providence. There are no words. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for this video.
only a toto cover band with bad sound in the video. That's why video should be banned in concerts. Legends should stop before their status is destroyed by such bad videos.
Toto was always a project of great musicians. No different today than decades ago. Their albums reflect a diverse collection of players through the years.
I am actually corresponding with Kenneth nicely. He is actually still alive and has been in the Ark department of corrections since 1958. He is serving life in Arkansas for killing a police officer, while on the run for killing Mr. Brown. He is 86 years old and I correspond with him regularly.
Does he watch TH-cam? Has he ever tried to contact anyone in the Brown family?
@@doug3959 he doesn’t have access to the internet and is probably not aware of TH-cam. It seems like he is a bit more simplistic… I have never really discussed his crimes with him very much.
I’m so sorry
Best hot food of any local restaurant, awesome service too❤😊
Good job for reporting it and to the Laurel County Solid Waste Department for their quick action. I'm sure the families of those interred in that cemetery appreciate it as well.
Would those of you fine folks recording live concerts with Apple devices (there are probably others) that alter mix, timbre, and the ratio 'direct:hall-reverb' as you Zoom and Pan PLEASE find the switch to disable that feature ? ! The software that provides it is pretty darn clever (and well implemented), such that I almost hate to complain. But it's very disturbing to former professional sound people -- especially when the pace of Zoom/Pan approaches the rate of 'jump cuts'. Thanks.
I use Android and not sure how to do that. I'm not seeing anything in settings related to zoom and sound.
Researching the Hubbard family / McFaddens very curious about this place. Why was the city moved to Pike co.
Good to see they cleaned it up. I work for waste management, So see that all the time.
that's insane.
probably the best band i have seen live in my 70 years.apart from YES in their hey day when they were on a par with toto...do not miss them if they are anywhere near you.
Old London hwy 25 going to corbin is awful trash everywhere they need to clean it up
As it turns out, M.V. Gray was Martin Van Buren Gray 1838-1888. He was married to Matha Patsy Garland 1848-1879. He was a member of Co F 8th Kentucky Infantry in the Civil War. His sister, Adaline, married Frederick Benge, son of Smiling Dave Benge. Smiling Dave was my 3X great grandfather.
Hello Doug! My name's Leah. I am Willie B. Johnson's granddaughter (the young man counterpart to Ruby). I have been darn near obsessed with this story since my childhood! I was thrilled when I saw this video and I thank you for taking the time to put it together. One thing I would like to correct is that my Grandpa's brother's were Earl and Big Henry - Little Henry was the cousin. But, in any case, from the comments posted it is obvious that members from both families have the same story, but with differing details here and there. I would love nothing more than to have the opportunity for anybody who wants to take part in a group discussion to come together to pool and share all of the details so that we can put together the full story. Is this something you would be willing to assist with? If you or anyone else is interested in this, please reply and we can arrange contact! Again, I can't thank you enough or express how excited I am to possibly discuss this topic with any of y'all who might have more information! Hope to hear from you soon!
Sure. That story would be a great couple of podcast episodes with live interaction among participants.
Lots of my ancestors buried there. The Scovilles. Nice to see it's a beautiful place.
Brilliant! Love your videos Doug!
Loving the set list…Make Believe, Girl Goodbye…awesome!

8:09 Always interesting videos. We love exploring the area as well. Do you have any videos or information on the old Warner Hotel? We hiked that area several weeks ago and found the well.
I don't have any footage of the Warner area, and I'm not sure I've been given the correct location. I've never found any remnants of the hotel, only a flat open spot where I was told it sat. I have been told it sat in the clearing above Vanhook Falls at the very end of FR 119. Where is the well, and how did you get to the spot?
We literally just put in our GPS (warner hotel site) and went back line creek to left I believe on 119. A few miles back to a gate. You have to park there. We walked another 1.5 miles then turned right on what was an old road (there is a stop sign in the middle of nowhere)and continued another.7 miles. The GPS shows it being on the left but we found it on the right. Once the undergrowth starts greening, it will be difficult to see. I'll try and send pictures
@@TheScmenkhaus I know the stop sign location, but I've never been down that way to the right. I certainly didn't know the Warner site was down that way. I thought it was past the stop sign in the last clearing before dropping down to Vanhook Branch and the falls. Thanks for that information!
If you Google winding stair gap #402 USDA first service trail, it talks about the Warner hotel. That's how we started looking for it. The well is huge and you'll know it when you see it. Lots of foundation blocks scattered around also.
Forest service not first service, sorry.
Cool cut👍🏻
Is kash hoskins family buried there? Anyone know?
I believe Kash is buried at Hoskins #1 at Peabody.
Do you ever read the old Mountain Echo archives? That's where I came across this story just a few weeks ago.
