    they both sound fine. The buffet sounded more stable with intonation, from what I could tell. The selmer sounded fine in tune, just thought you had less need to control the buffet

    Hey Andrew how you doing this is Ken Falls and Atlanta. I like the sound of the buffet 400 it has a nice thick sound. The summer seemed a little lighter but I could tell by the way your hands were moving on the keys it like the 411 better than the 400. I would probably shoot for the 411 because I have a fat sound in myself by the mouthpiece that I'm using. I would shoot for the 411 because of the ergonomics of the horn I'll probably give you a call Monday

    I’ve been playing the same Mark VI since I paid $500 for it in 1973 sn# 210***, inimitable tone, typical intonation issues, had an adult student a few years ago who a Yamaha 62 - loved ergonomics and intonation…So the question is: the retail price on that 82A, shipped to 33065?

    Not sure about your comment about 82z more for experienced players. I'm just an amateur jazz player, not even college level. I play-tested both the 62 and 82z a decade ago, felt a huge difference and proceeded to select and purchase the 82z. If anything the customz was tons easier to play and sound. I guess it did play bright, so i did swap my ligature to darken the tone. But that was it. I've gigged a bunch and audiences generally loved the playing. So.. yeah, I don't see what's so difficult about playing the customz at all. Love it.

      Except it is a quality horn. I choose to play this model exclusively now instead of my Yani. The tone color and overall expressiveness of sound is objectively better. Keilwerth artists also helped design the horn. Who cares where it's made? Most of the 'fad' pro models of today are also made in China or Taiwan.

    French horn: 5 to 6 octaves????? NO. The VERY BEST in the world can consistently play 4.5 to 5 octaves, functionally. CONN 8Ds have NOT been consistent through the decades. The 'letter series' from Elkhart, IN were the best. The CONNS made in Abilene, TX sucked completely. The earlier the Elkhart were extremely good, but the Elkhart, IN letter series were the BEST. Luckily, CONN/Selmer has now returned to making their 8Ds according to that spec. Today's manufacturing processes actually improve upon the 'letter series' from Elkhart. I don't need the dang water key, however. I guess I'll live with it... I made Principal Horn in the TX All-State Orchestra. 1981. I played with the Houston Symphony by age 22. Audition the NEW CONN 8Ds. Made in Eastlake, OH - Get one made after 2021.

  • @thomassicard3733
    @thomassicard3733 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

    CONN/SELMER is now making CONN 8Ds according to the Vince DeRosa 260 page specifications. These adhere to the GREATEST 'letter series' spec that was made in Elkhart, IN. I am auditioning these horn to find MY HORN. I know what I'm talking about.

    I don’t know why some commenters here were so critical towards your demo. Nothing wrong with it at all, especially considering that 99% of the Aerophone playing content I see online here and elsewhere is truly dull and forgettable lite/smooth jazz flavored material. Hate to be such a Negative Nancy but I just don’t see anyone taking advantage of it’s impressive synth capabilities. Seems the instrument is just way ahead of its time maybe?

    Interesting video and I thank you for making it. I am a clarinet guy who is 72 and wants to relearn the alto. (I played it in high school) My concern is that the cost is high and there is a part of me that suspects that this horn has "made mostly in china" in its DNA and I do not want to purchase ANYTHING that comes from China. Am I missing the boat here?

    I played a 62 tenor for 6 months, but, from the first notes I played on the 82II, it just seemed to have a more complex tone. It took me a few months of daily playing to make the horn "mine", but I've had it for 6 years now and haven't regretted trading up. (And it goes longer between repair/tune-ups than the 62.)

    I’ve had my 480 for a few years now, and I was faced with whether I wanted to buy a custom neck or upgrade the horn. After trying a few options, including both the 62 and 82z, I determined the horn I had was fine, and I ended up with a te1 neck, and it plays like a dream. YMMV, but I couldn’t justify paying $5,000 for an upgraded horn when the improvements are so minor.

    Buffet is a saxophone I've had in my collection since 1981 of various models. I would say that all the ones i've had demonstrate the same overriding design principles, which are to be mellow, rich, with great intonation. This would be the number one go-to for playing a non-solo part in a band. I've never been able to make one of these "scream" of any model or year of Buffet, but I've obviously not owned all of them (I do own this particular Buffet 400). My personal take on these is that they align with what I've read about the original intentions for the saxophone by Adophe Sax, and they do that better than all others in my opinion. I do think they are a different animal than most other saxophones in that respect. Being made in China or Taiwan as an issue, I'll only say that horns are made according to the design principles of a designer, and sound accordingly. I wouldn't draw connections between a buffet and cheaply made horns from the same region, because my experience is that the cheapness of those amazon horns doesn't spread like a virus due to geographic proximity, and also that you are kidding yourself if you think your <4k Selmer was made in Paris :P . In that price range, I think you can debatably do better, and definitely do much worse.
