AVATAR: The Way of the Water film panel with director James Cameron and actress Zoe Saldaña
First public appearance by director James Cameron after contracting Covid which prohibited him from attending many of his LA premiere dates for AVATAR: THE WAY OF THE WATER. This screening and panel discussion was held on December 18th in the David Geffen Theater at the Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles.
Presented here are the first 10 minutes of the panel focusing on the film's longer running time and how the studios responded to that issue; Zoe Saldaña's late arrival to the panel and Jim's hilarious tongue-in-cheek response; the overwhelming challenges that lead actress Zoe faced in performing with motion capture technology: and editor Stephen Rivkin and Jim discuss how "The Way of the Water" was "edited twice." Watch the video for the context of that statement. The choices that Jim had in terms of re-imagining and resizing the shots in the Pandora world after the motion capture was done was unprecedented.
The entire panel, seated left to right: moderator John Horn and host of the podcast Retake with John Horn; director/co-writer/producer/editor James Cameron; producer Jon Landau; actress Zoe Saldana; composer Simon Franglen; costume designer Deborah L. Scott; editor Stephen Rivkin, ACE; supervising sound editor Gwendolyn Yates Whittle; production designer Dylan Cole; and cinematographer Russell Carpenter.
Sidenote: for the remaining 20 minutes more of panel not shown here, hopefully others can post or provide more complete video coverage elsewhere. Gotta confess my hands got tired of holding the iPhone steady after 10 minutes and had to end the recording. I was shooting in 4K with the iPhone 13 (no Pro Res) and punching in for closer shots with video editing software. I did break the rules of video quality by reframing and going in closer than I should have, but in my view the result is still very watchable.
That said, an extraordinary array of talent from all departments graced that stage and I hope you enjoy this small sample of it.

Ricordavo bene.

for everyone out there, terry robinson, was a true humanatarian, and was my best friend. I got to know terry, through me being a member of the mario lanza institute, in philadelphia. terry was a health trainer working for mgm studios, in hollywood, where he had the tenor mario lanza as a student. mario was over weight, so terry would work him out, and put him on a diet, so he could make his movies.terry was also an artist, who could really draw, i have a picture he sent me of pope john, that he drew. I went to terrys 85th birthday in hollywood, he was truly a wonderful man. god bless you terry, you truly inspired me to be a better person, god bless you always. Louie Vaccaro, tenor, las vegas.

Watching these former child television stars (of the 1950s) is both amazing and sad, amazing they are all still alive, but sad they all look so much older than most fans of the series' in which they acted remember them looking (even a few years beyond their peaks). I guess I probably saw Bobby Diamond the most, recall seeing him in "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis" as well episodes of "Lassie," "Mister ED," "Pete & Gladys," and some others, plus that elongated, big screen sitcom starring Patty Duke titled "Billie." I always liked Bobby in film and television, and he seems the type of guy I would enjoy hanging out with in reality. He's animated, bright, charming, and sarcastic, just like "Duncan Gillis" and myself. But I will always hold dear his portrayal of the younger "Joey Newton" in "Fury," as iconic a portrayal of a boy character as Tommy Rettig's "Jeff Miller," and Jon Provost's "Timmy Martin" in "Lassie," as well Ronny Howard's "Opie Taylor" in "The Andy Griffith Show" and Jerry Mathers' "Theodore Cleaver" in "Leave it to Beaver." I remember having seen Roger Mobley several times in TV appearances over the years too, probably watched a few episodes of that Walt Disney-produced "Gallagher" series, and definitely saw his portrayal of a teen on the verge of becoming a juvenile delinquent in an episode of Jack Webb's revived "Dragnet" police detective series of the late 1960s. I guess Bobby Diamond or Roger Mobley look the coolest/hippest on the live panel of this video, especially for, respectively, a septuagenarian and sexagenarian. Of all the guys on the panel, Diamond and Mobley resemble their boy selves the most. Interesting, too, what different paths their lives took after leaving the "Broken Wheel Ranch" and picking up shorter-term Hollywood gigs when they could before leaving Hollywood altogether; that Diamond enrolled in college to avoid the military draft and eventually became an attorney specializing in malpractice and personal injuries cases, while Mobley was drafted and went to Vietnam, then re-enlisted for special services, and became an undercover narcotics police officer in his native Texas. With his greater girth, Jimmy "Pee Wee" Baird is certainly far from a "pee wee" guy now. But he retains the sense of humor and playfulness he conveyed as "Pee Wee" and other boy characters he played in scripted films and TV shows through his adolescence. It might have been fun to have had Mr. Baird as an English teacher. I really didn't watch "My Friend Flicka" as much as or just don't recall it as I do "Fury," both of which I watched in Saturday morning reruns, never first-run in prime time. But Johnny Washbrook also seems a very articulate, kind and sensitive man. I plan to rectify my vagueness about the particulars of these beloved TV westerns (it's been several years since I've seen either of them) by watching whatever episodes of them I can, in fairly short order.
