We started sailing in 2015 and had no idea how to dock a boat, call for a bridge lift, or how to contact a marina. It all seemed a bit overwhelming. We decided to start this channel to pass on what we learn to you!
Fast forward to 2023. We decided to get a bigger boat. A Catalina 28 to be exact. It was a hard decision to let our Catalina 25 go but we wanted a new challenge. We put a lot of love and care into her, but we found the perfect family for her and we know they will enjoy her as much as we have.
We are excited to start this new chapter with our new boat and glad you're along with us. Hope to see you out there!

What a way to spend the Fouth of July! EP54
Seems like a really amazing place to sail. Access to the lake, but also very protected in the Bay. Love watching people enjoy their sailboats. When I retire will do the same thing. Videos about "sailing" and the reality of it. And sometimes it isn't fun. Sometimes its terrifying. LOL. We are on the Chesapeake, so very protected, and lots of options for anchoring and overnighting, and of course longer passage cruising. Just put the boat to bed yesterday. Cover on and ready for a short nap. (Really only 3.5 - 4 months) Certainly NOT Wisconsin. But I can appreciate that being from there.
I'm not a racer but I wonder if your close hauled performance might haven been improved by moving the main traveler a bit to weather, powering the main a bit more. What do you think?
Thought the same with the main, up to windward and eased a bit for some mainsail twist. Perhaps the jib car back a bit as well, felt that the foresail had too much draft and was configured more for power than speed. Not a racer either. Just like to sail fast.
You guys did well. Nice point of sail on the beam reach’s. Will come back to this video this winter when the snow flies.
You should slide your headsail tracks back to open of the top shape of the sail and drive the boat with more power. Being too far forward, it is pulling down hard on the tack making a super tight leach and cupping the sail. Evident at 21:10 with the leach flutter.
Greetings from the Pacific Northwest! I currently sail a 22-ft Starwind sailboat (nice version of the Catalina 22). I am considering buying and owning a Catalina 28 for just a few seasons. My intent is to take family up the Inside Passage between Seattle, WA and Ketchikan, AK. Would you be willing to answer a few questions for me? 1. What is the length of the V-berth? 2. What is the length of the Aft berth? 3. What is the width and length of the side berths (port and starboard)? 4. What is your typical cruise speed with engine? 5. What is your fuel burn at that cruise speed in gallons per hour? Thank you in advance for any information you can help me with. -Dennis
Hi Dennis! Mark is 5’10” and fits comfortably in both berths and the starboard settee. Im 5’2” and can sleep comfortably on the port, and fit port to starboard in the V-berth. We take the back cushions off the port and starboard settees for more shoulder room, they’re quite comfy. As far as the motor, we cruise at about 6 knots, 2,400 RPM and burn about 1/2 gallon per hour. Our boat is on the hard but so Hoping this helps!
2hp? Wow. Super light though
@@MadMarv. … and small. It fits in our cockpit locker
2hp? Wow
Thanks for the great video 🙂
@@shipshapecanvas6979 we love it and it fits perfect!
A+ job on the installation!
As always, I enjoy your videos. The joke about CQR is that it stands for "Can't Quite Reset". Sounds like you experienced that. I switched from a plow anchor (which dragged in Detroit Harbor) to a Rocna 10 as my main anchor for Seraphim (our Catalina 30). I have a Manson Boss as my secondary. Now no problems. Last year we had both set in Jackson Harbor in Sturgeon Bay when a 40-50kt storm blew through. We didn't move an inch. Both are rock solid options in my opinion.
@@catalinadave3919 LOL! I believe that acronym is correct and thanks for the anchor tip, we are leaning towards the rocna but will check out the Manson boss too
Another good video, keep posting! ;)
Is the Genoa to big? Do they normally rest on the life lines?
@@MadMarv. Thanks for asking! Not sail experts but we think they usually do. We had a similar sized sail and set up to our 25 and many sailboat in our club have the same configuration.
Sail trim is everything. You can sail in 4 knots of wind. You just need to know how. BIG FAT SAILS.
And lots of time …
SHHHHHHWeeet
Ha! It was!
🎉 good times
How long did the umbrellas last?
@@MadMarv. we still have them! A friend of ours suggested them and he’s had them for a couple years. I’d suggest getting two.
If you have a topping lift for the pole, you can keep the pole weight from dragging down the clew of the headsail and get better shape into the sail by decreasing the downward pull and also being able to push the pole more forward to open the sail up more. Great video!
We don’t have a topping lift … yet! We took our mast off this year and that’s part of our plan.
I love anchoring there
Hopefully, we'll see you there!
Pretty windy then!
@@alanluckystripesb3706 it sure was! 🌬⛵️
Love new sailing channels just subscribed. One day I’ll do the same. Happy sailing
Great video guys. A week of adventure with everything. For 2025 Beaver island goes on the bucket list.
We thought we’d try something different with the longer video. And it’s definitely on the 2025 list
Nice steering technique with right foot. Hope your left foot is healing well. I’m still recovering From total right knee surgery. Will definitely be back next year for Breakfast on the Bay
Glad to hear! Hope recovery is going well and we need to catch up soon
More dancing please!
LOL! Maybe! Mark was mimicking a Six Flags commercial …

We anchored at Nicolet Bay on 9/3 and were well protected from the south winds. It was exciting sailing there from Sturgeon Bay.
It’s such a beautiful anchorage! If you ever have extra days there, there’s a path that goes around Horse Shoe island that has amazing over looks and we usually go to shore and sneak a shower usually the camp ground.🤫
A little bit of everything
It really was!
where did you buy this tarpaulin?
It's a custom sail cover from ShipShape out of Duluth Minnesota. We would highly recommend them. www.shipshapecanvas.com/
Looking for a cat 28, mind sharing what year is your? It looks prestine.
@@blushihtzu thank you! It’s a 91’
Down Home was just at Jackson Harbor August 24. Three of us had come down from Fayette, MI and Sunday sailed home to Sturgeon Bay.. Beaver Island is on my bucket list.
Nice! We love Fayette and Jackson Harbor. We are currently with our club cruisers in fish creek. We are definitely giving beaver island a go next year.
We have a Catalina 28 for sale near us. I'm so tempted
That depends on what you have now and what you want to do. Previously we had a Catalina 25. So far we are loving ours. It handles the wave better, is faster, and has better systems than the 25.
Beaver Island will be there next year
That’s right! We’ve already started planning it.
The two of you are a blast to watch!😊
@@bethhoppen2380 thanks Beth!!
I know and love that feeling when you're "in the groove"! Enjoy the learning curve! John, 86 and still sailing!
Thanks John! We definitely pick our days to push our days to push ourselves. Where do you sail out of?
Congratulations on having such a beautiful boat!!! God bless you both!
Thank you so much!
You got some nice footage of the Niagara escarpment. I couldn't see if you were outfitted for companionway doors or hatch boards, but you crossed Eeaths Door with your companionway open which is fine as long as you don't ship a cockpit full of water all at once which can happen when you're being pitched and tossed.
Good point! We usually put at least the first hatch board in but not always the companion way hatch. Good thing we’re not salted😉
Good thing the Howes, Mary Ann, Ginger, and the Professor were all safe below.
I kinda want to know how you could get the lost if your just going out for three hours
There was a big storm
@@717101 Ha! We had a discussion with a few sailer friends on this. How do you get to a deserted island on that sort of time? They probably only went 5-10 miles.
Is that a Catalina 31 ?
No it’s a Catalina 28
It’s not always blue sky and good wind and a beam reach. You guys did a great job and tested Yourself and built confidence in yourself and your new boat. Two things you can do for your Anchor issue. Add more chain or make a messenger with a weight and separate line. On a Carbineer send it down the anchor line to the seabed then raise it up 5 to 10 feet. This changes The scope of your anchor line as well as acts like a snubber. Cheers Steve 9:32
@@stevebetow5666 thank you Steve. Next time your around let’s chat more about this, appreciate your insights!
In regards to the anchor - you probably aren't setting enough scope out so the anchor isn't digging in properly. Use a 7:1 scope or even 10:1.
@@davethewave1898 we always use a 7:1 in calm waters. I did a bit of research and these anchors should land on there side, drag a bit, then rotate and dig in. We will try 10:1, maybe it will help it rotate.
Oh man that was a sporty first sail, and y'all handled it great. Would you have done that in your 25?
@@michaelconway4316 yes it definitely tested our sailing abilities. I would not have gone in the 25, it probably would have been ok but it was a 10 hour day. We would have been pushed around too much for too long. We always say “if it’s not fun, don’t do it”.
Great video! We are getting ready to move onto and renovate an old coastal cruiser. Can't wait to keep up with your progress and gets some inspiration!!
@@ReidDogsOnDeck thank you! What kind of boat are you renovating?
@@sailingsvslowride It’s a 1972 Whitcraft ‘50. Lot of work, but ready to get started. 💕
Just watch ur video, love the name❤️!!!
@@sailingsvslowride 😂 Thanks. It’s probably gonna take me a while to get there.

Fellow Catalina 28 owner, great video!!
Thank you!
I upgraded from my 84 Catalina 25 to a 87 Catalina 27 and it came with one of those covers. Looks like they work great.
How do you like the 27?
@@sailingsvslowride loving it so far. Still got to get the running rigging set up just how I like, but definitely enjoying how much less tender the 27 wing keel is over the 25 swing keel. Love the standing head room below also. How are you liking your 28?
It needs a lot of work and it doesn’t have any electronics. We love it!
Squirrel!
@miketessmer1452 TESSMER!! The kingfisher was pretty cool … Hey want to go sailing with us in a few weeks? We could get Dockum and Joel to go too!

No doubt, it's nice to have the extra weight :)
Great episode! Keep posting videos! ;)
We will! Thanks for watching.👀
Very cool congrats sail on
Thank you! We had a great time.
Nice video. Thanks for sharing. I sail on Green Bay too and have had a hard time getting out this year…so thank you for this. I hope to be out there soon.
Our pleasure!
Geeeez! Catalina 28 / 28 mkii are so rare! They're priced the same for a more common mk 2 34' or hunter 340. mkii 28' is such an amazing boat for its size and its time.
Yes! The lower bay is pretty shallow and we need a shallow draft to keep it at the marina, it definitely checks all the boxes.
What boat are you sailing? Looks under 30ft how did she handle the big water?😊
@@clintontaylor8904hello!That’s our 25ft. It did ok but We recently upgraded to a 28ft, 8500 lbs. It handles them great.
Such a great video! Well done - thanks for sharing!
Thank you!
