Highest Wiltshire - Milk Hill and Tan Hill

Not really very high but the highest point in Wiltshire at 295m is Milk Hill in the Marlborough Downs. It's neighbour, Tan Hill is only 1m lower. Ever the romantics, Milk Hill is marked nearby by a grounded rail tank - n-i-c-e... This is a walk visiting both hills on a beautiful morning with incoming weather for the afternoon. Another big sky day.

Winter Visits the Black Mountains
มุมมอง 686 หลายเดือนก่อน
That rarest of things, snow covered Black Mountains. I hadn't anticipated it at all and assumed it would be just a dusting of snow that would melt off by lunchtime. No, it was full-on, drifting snow, about 2 feet deep over the tops! Very tiring for an old fart like me to wade through but very spectacular. It's amazing how snow can transform even the modest Black Mountains into something magical...

    Lovely to see this route - it must be 20+ years since I did almost the same circuit - I started though at the road just north of Ystradfellte (Fan Llia CP) and did Fan Nedd 1st and then finished off on that long barren track between Penwyllt & Sarn Helen. Anyone I know who has walked that path comes away with the sense of wilderness so in that respect you are not on your own. I was wondering if you was going to pass Maen Madoc - I took a friend there a few months ago as he had never seen it - we spent a few hours wanddering the limestone outcrops south of this before wandering along. I was surprised how defined the path was leading up to the Fan Nedd ridge.. it wasn't like that many years ago . Love that view from the cairn looking down into what people affectionaly call the Lorna Doone Valley (it was filmed there back in the 90ts) Blaen Senni. Last time I was up Fan Ghyhirych was a few years ago when me and some mates walked up in the snow - short video on my channel - the summit is a bit bland but that view of the north side is a cracker. Really enjoyed watching this.. thanks for sharing. atb Alan

    Beautiful but strange place. Sometimes looks like ancient vulcanic origins, stones splitting in such regular patterns. Guess there are no wild animals left and it gets real cold and wet in winter. In Mediterranean areas like this there'd be a lot of snakes / reptiles in all those boulder fields - so quite an uneasy feeling to hike and camp.

    • @hillsthings4077
      @hillsthings4077 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Stefan, yes it is, that's part of it's appeal for me. The rocks are ancient seabed, coarse dark sandstone and mudstone, dating from the Cambrian period, a rock known as 'graywacke'. Yeah, in the UK we've lost most of our 'interesting' animals!

    I know where the bridge up you are talking about. I come from nant peris side. I can follow the wall from nant peris along a footpath so far to get into the cwm that you clambered up to reach the base of Llechog. It's from there at the base that I'm confused. Did you scramble to the top, or is there grass flanks to get up the left (the side you tackled it from) side to get up onto the ridge? ❤

    • @hillsthings4077
      @hillsthings4077 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I can't really remember that level of detail, I went to the right and then bypassed a grade 2 section on the left. But I can't really say exactly where that was, it was below what I considered to be the start of the scrambling proper. Not sure if that's useful.

    • @juleswilliams1207
      @juleswilliams1207 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, that's very helpful. I read a short report on the trail on a climbers/graded scrambles. It says to stay left (on easier terrain) of the big tower with the clefts in your video and chamber up stone slabs (great handhold you commented when started climbing it) that I saw when I watched your video again after reading it. Then it says ascend the rib to the next tower and go right to bypass the tower and stay on the rib until you accend onto a prominent shoulder. The next step is climbed on the left where the ridge eases. then stay left for the least challenging route to the top. does this sound like what you did?Thanks for all your support. I Am determined to do it and come down the gryrn las ridge that you came down. Do you remember how far down in metres is the gully you have to come down if following the grass path from the top gyrn las ? ❤❤

    • @hillsthings4077
      @hillsthings4077 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry mate, I just can't remember that level of detail. I kind of just read the terrain and climbed what I thought looked ok for me. The thing with scrambling is it's a lot less precise than climbing where you can identify individual moves and features clearly. Again with the descent I just located it via the map (it's a bit tricky to find as you can't see it from above) until it coalesced into a ridge then followed it down and tackled obstacles as I encountered them. As I've said before, you need to be confident in navigation in steep mixed ground, you don't want to fall down Cyrn Las!

    • @juleswilliams1207
      @juleswilliams1207 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think I should go up gyrn las 1st before coming down it then. Your video is so awesome, and so are you. I'm trying to find all the routes off the llanberis ridge down to nant peris avoiding llanberis where my brother and I got stuck for a couple of hours after we missed the last bus. I was so exhausted and feet killing me that I couldn't walk the 3 to 4 mile road to nant peris. I know there's at least 5 off. The 610m contour mountain is one. Bwlch coch is another llechog another, gyrn las, and a few more. Thanks for all your help. Will leave you alone now, mate. Must be getting on your nerves by now 😂. Will keep watching this fantastic video for clues, though. I do know how to use a map and compass, but after a breakdown in late 2017, then covid, kinda lost some confidence. I was a really good navigator before. Just getting the confidence back. My brother has no navigation skills at all. It's all down to me. No pressure 😂. I got us on the ridge last time, though, plan B. I always have a plan B ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

  • @juleswilliams1207
    @juleswilliams1207 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    👋 I tried to get up from nant peris up the right side and got stuck a few times. Thankfully, my brother was with me. When I got up there, there was llechog to my left, 2 subsidiaries, and the 610m contour mountain to my right. Llechog seemed impassible and too steep above the cliffs. So knackered after the steep climb from nant peris, I went with plan B and headed for the 610m contour mountain. It was the safest move. Didn't find a path till high up. Will be trying again from the left side accent to see if that is easier. Thanks again. Just thought I'd let you know how I got on. I've a recovering ankle injury, too, which doesn't help, but I'm stubborn. If I want to do it, I'll do my best to do it. I find it hard to follow your video as we are starting in a different place. Are you starting from the metal footbridge???? to get up, llechog????

      Hi Jules, I parked in a layby down from the entrance to Cwm Glas. There's no paths, well not any formal ones, I crossed the Nant Peris by the bridge at 614 576 then freelanced it to the bottom of Llechog. I wouldn't recommend coming down that way unless you're very experienced with steep mixed ground, i.e. down climbing. Have a good one!

    • @juleswilliams1207
      @juleswilliams1207 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks so much mate. I got to the 2nd stile from Nant Peris. With a recovering ankle injury I decided that was enough for one day. That took me an hour including photos. I've screenshot a lot of your video to try and follow to get to the top of Llechog. Which side of Llechog has the grass flanks to to the top? The left side or the right side when you're looking up from the pass? I'm going Sunday again to go further. Thanks for responding. ❤ Jules

    • @hillsthings4077
      @hillsthings4077 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Made it to the col between Llechog and the 610m contour mountain top and headed for that as plan B. Alwagood to have a plan B. When I got up there, I could see I couldn't get up the right side of Llechog. OMG, what a bloody steep and dangerous climb up to the col between Llechog and the 610m top. Took a wrong turn at the base. Luckily, I was ok. But steep wasn't the word. Thanks for all your ❤
