Recreating the 70s style baladi grove on my new bongos
To dance and vintage music aficionados, this may sound very familiar. Did you know that the Bangerz were used extensively on stage and in recording studios during the golden age of a Gyptian music in cinema during the mid and late 20th century? I love them and I think they had so much color to the ensemble.

Three Methods for Riq

I feel like we don't hear about RIQ that often... I can't get enough of it. Here's a mini riq lesson for you all. If you'd like to learn more about riq and other instruments, shoot me an email, find me online on powhow ( www.powhow.com/classes/marshall-bodiker-dummer ) where I'm available for live classes, or book me for your next workshop

Tabla Solo with Hamdy Elkhayat
มุมมอง 7938 ปีที่แล้ว
Got together with my friends Hamdy and Farag one night to practice in a studio on Pyramid Street in Giza. We decided to have a little fun and take turns soloing to some rhythms. Hamdy Elkhayat is a great drummer in the Cairo/Giza area and has been nice enough to jam with me time and again. We were a little tired and rusty but still had a blast :D

    A Tabla is an Indian drum. This is not a Tabla, it's a Darbuka.

    it was less about teaching and more about him showing off his technique. No beginning player would get anything useful out of the video, except, maybe, discouragement.

      idk where to find them on line off hand, but you could try arabinstruments.com. I bought mine in Cairo. they are sold in a handful of stores around town. This one only cost me $100.

    Really really good. You've explained something that can be really daunting for percussionists that have little insight into "odd" time signatures and equally new and interesting percussion instruments unbelievably well. Thanks a lot man!! Plus you have amazing technique

  • @JessicaBundy93

    What size doumbek do you suggest people buy?

    • @mbodi1
      @mbodi1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any size you wish! Tablas come in two sizes. Most are around 9 inches across and some are a little bigger (these are called sombati) I say, if it sounds good and you feel comfortable playing it, get it. It's important to know that there is a very large variety called dohola and these are usually used for accompaniment.
