Picture-perfect waves, ridden by absolute shredders are everywhere these days. Now let’s be real, most of us did not grow up surfing and do not live in Hawaï. This channel is about sharing what surfing is really like for the average person.
I started surfing at 25 and live in France, so my reality involves a lot of subpar conditions, cold water and sometimes, when the stars align, some epic waves. But be it small, choppy or pumping, I don’t care. As long as I can drop in and do a turn, I am out there!

nice! that's the surf i like! here in italy during winter there's a swell every 1/2 weeks and the sun goes down at 5/6 pm depend on the season so we end up doing 4 hours sessions straight (with 5 mm wetsuits)
@@gi4nn354 Happy you’ve enjoyed it! I’d imagine you’d always be trying to get the most out of any swell in Italy! Mate anything longer than 2 hours becomes an absolute hustle with a thick wetsuit. 4/3s actually seem so light once you’ve worn thicker 😂 How cold does the water get over there?

@@MaxSurf5 Hey mate thanks for the support, means a lot! Yew that’s so sick! The Action 3 is a pretty solid camera. You won’t be disappointed by the reliability of this thing. A word of advice : attach the leash directly onto the protective frame. You don’t want it attached to the mouth mount. This way, if the magnetic mount loosens for any reason, you’ll be safe 🤙
@@maximebesson yeah thanks man, the magnetic mounting looks cool but i dont completely trust it, so I will definitely take your advice.

@@NateSurfsSLO Super happy to hear you’re finding it helpful! And thank you for the kind words, I will surely keep it up! If you don't own a longboard in Florida, a large part of your life will go unridden.
@@francus7227 Longboards definitely rule the small waves game! Though it’s pretty inspiring to me how far some surfers can take their short boards in tiny mush. I don’t own any other board so I’m kind of forced to make it work in all types of conditions. It’s always fun and it’s good training 🤙
@maximebesson I grew up in Jacksonville. I lived on the North Shore for five years. You don't golf with one club. Sure.... You "can" surf a short board in small waves. And clearly, you do it pretty well. That doesn't make it your best choice. It makes you surfing your best, based on your choice to ride a board that's not designed for the waves it'sbeing ridden on.. You should have at least 4 boards. 1) An aggressive short board for good waves. 2) A 7'-ish pig for waist high-ish waves. 3) A 9'4" for mush under knee high. 4) An 8'6" gun for days over 10' faces..... Not because it's better than a 6'6" board in overhead surf. But, because it's the only board to ride in LARGE surf. .... i.e. island 10' (30' faces and heaving). If you don't learn to handle an 8'6" gun at home, you'll be way behind the learning curve when to finally see double hold down size waves for the first time. A gun is a COMPLETELY different game. If you ride a longboat in small surf AND a gun in "larger," it will better prepare you for big waves.... like mainland Mexico, Puerto Rico, the North Shore, etc.... Good luck.
@maximebesson P.S. If you go to a gun fight with a knife.... You will be part of the lip. You aren't going to ride Sunset on a 6'6" board. PERIOD. You have to have a gun in big waves.
@ Greatly appreciate the insight! Looks like those 4 boards would indeed cover all types of conditions. A longer, more fun shaped board is definitely on my bucket list for small and/or very mushy waves. Anything over 8’, quite honestly, I want no part of 😂 Maybe 10’ if it’s a mushy, very predictable point break or something. I will happily admire from the beach if it is any bigger than that. But even then, I agree that I’d need a longer board. Thanks for sharing your knowledge 🤙
Of course the tried and true way to surf smaller waves is to use a longer board. newly subbed. Cheers. Los Angeles
@@yahwea Fully agree! One board quivers are just inconvenient sometimes 😅 Thanks for subscribing! Hoping this winter will be epic for you over there 🤙
Happy to see a realistic view of some small wave surf. As lake surfers predominantly we struggle to have good conditions so it's hard to compare against the larger population of ocean surfers. Your comment about "almost as flat as a lake" made us chuckle....flat isn't always the case on a lake...we had some head high waves just this week. Great vlog dude!
@@thejarrettsjourney Glad you’ve enjoyed this more relatable content! You’re right and I’ve actually seen some great footage of lake waves. It can get really good! In France, none of our lakes are nearly big enough to have any waves at all, so that’s where I was coming from 😅 Happy you’ve scored recently mate, hope this winter will bring good surf to you 🤙
@maximebesson absolutely, we are blessed with some big lakes. I knew what you meant 😉. ✌️
Yea man..I,d be out on the trusty 7'6 in those conditions..gotta get on the shorter fish more often...that last wave looked like a tube..XD
@@middleagedshredAnd you’d probably be way better off on those boards! At least the only board I have does have enough volume to float me in those tiny waves 😅 Thanks for watching man! 🤙

Hey brother, nice video! I’m a surfer from South Brazil, and while I was scrolling through my TH-cam page, I noticed your video because we have the same name, haha. @@matheusbe5040 Hey man, happy you enjoyed it! Aha that’s funny, neither would I’ve thought Besson was also a last name in Brazil. Yes it’s actually quite a common one over here in France! I think it’s derived from the Latin word for twins. Do you have European roots maybe?
