Because Wales is largely made up of English speaking peoples. South Wales; Cardiff and Swanse was settled by English miners last century. The majority of Wales are not ethnic Welsh and don't speak the language but they do consider themselves Welsh. Ryan Giggs spent most of his time in Manchester. Irish and Scottish Football and Rugby team have many English in them too. Accents don't tell the true story. Mctominay for Manchester United, is a born and bred Manc but is playing for Scotland

Incorrect, and an absurd generalisation. Giggs himself was born in Wales but has spent a lot of his life in Salford and Manchester. A lot of Welsh people have lived in England, theer has been plenty of inter-marriage and the English have moved more into Wales, diluting the accent in some parts. Whereas Welsh was once commonly spoken in Chester (and elsewhere across the border), now in N.E Wales Scouse has changed the local accents. Of course, a large number of Welsh people have Welsh accents, either South Wales, or the different Welsh-speakers' accents in various areas further from England. And many people of Welsh parentage born in England naturally prefer to represent Wales, being justly proud of that identity and heritage. Gabby Logan was born in Leeds but represented Wales at rhythmic gymnastics as her dad Terry Yorath was (a fine) captain of Wales. On programmes like Antiques Roadshow in Wales the better off people having valuable objects are more likely to be English so Welsh accents are rarer. The English in Wales own more than the Welsh do.

@@mizofan you're missing that the majority of the population of Wales that claims to be Welsh are also of English background. Especially the South West. Many people may feel proud about being Welsh but discover that their entire family arrived into Cardiff or Swanse last century. You have the ethnic Welsh Speaking people, mostly in the North. You have the setteld former English population, who claim and feel Welsh but in reality are just English. Mainly in Swansea and Cardiff and of course you have the more recent immigration from England buying property. There is a reason why Swansea and Cardiff are in the English Premier League.
