Thank you Trevor! Many modern keyboards nowadays can replicate the Hammond sound, so a genuine Hammond organ isn’t as important to get “that” sound as it used to be. For example I have a Nord Stage which does every bit as good a job of recreating the Hammond/Leslie sound.

Any analogue or analogue modelling synth can create this sound. It’s just a simple square wave with some white noise and fast attack / short release on the ADSR. However a big part of the sound is external FX - a flanger and a delay are essential to complete the sound. Hope this helps!

Hi David, I had a Novation Mininova and an Ultranova, they’re great synths. They are analogue modelling synths so can get you fairly close to pretty much any sound you want from the old vintage analogue era of the 70’s/early 80’s. The FX are great too and essential to creating many of those old sounds because back then there was a lot of layering of sounds and putting them through external FX pedals etc

Wow, brilliant Paul, you're never too old to learn and I can't think of anything better than learning to play songs that evoke memories of your youth (I'm 59 so I grew up through glam-rock, disco, punk, and synth pop). I was friendly with "Rico" who had a recording studio here in Glasgow, Rico collaborated with Gary Numan many years ago (sadly I never got to meet Gary though): th-cam.com/video/5N3-N9CiyXE/w-d-xo.html

By the way Paul, I don't know what synthesiser you have but there's a great tutorial by Matt Jessup on how to recreate the Polymoog Vox Humana sound made famous by Gary Numan. In the tutorial he uses a Roland Jupiter 8000 to create it, but any analogue or virtual analogue synth with two layers and two LFO's should be able to do it no problem. Hey, if I can create a reasonable Polymoog vox humana on an arranger keyboard which isn't even a synth, any half decent synth should be able to do it! Hi David, yes, Rico was one of the good guys, totally genuine from head to toe. He taught music production (including how to play synths and create sounds on them) to local school kids. He also had a couple of restaurants and some other properties too, so he was a smart guy as well as a talented guy. A down-to-earth gentleman through and through. ❤️

Congratulations David, the bass line of this song is ideal for a beginner to learn as it descends down through the scale in a fairly uncomplicated way so it's easy to remember. If you want to progress your playing, you should now try to get the right hand playing the melody at the same time. It just takes a bit of co-ordination, a bit like driving a car. Practice practice practice is the secret!

Thank you Steve. It's not actually a backing track, it's individual arranger styles for each section which I'm stepping through one at a time. I've used the same drums and balanced the individual instruments within each style to give it the feeling that it's flowing as one continuous song.

@@robinsss No it's not, it's correct, these are my arrangements of these songs so every note and every chord is played exactly as I arranged, played and intended them to be.

No, this is my own personal arrangement of this song which I created specially to fit in with the other songs in my medley, it’s not the Van Halen version (just to give you but one example, I also put a two semitone key change towards the end to give the end of my medley dramatic effect, you won’t find this key change in any Van Halen arrangement of this song).
