If you can't get a title for it, you can't register it or sell it. You might as well have won a telephone pole. If I were you I'd also contact your local PD and ask them if they can run the VIN on the bike after you explain the situation. You need to make absolutely certain the bike isn't stolen. If the police run the VIN and it does come back as stolen, they won't arrest you so don't worry about that (I've been a police officer for 27 years in DC) HOWEVER, they will have to take it for recovery because it would be stolen property. It would have to be returned to the rightful owner. The other case is it could still have a bank lien on it and he can't get the title until the loan is paid. Something doesn't smell right with this deal you got. I HIGHLY suggest you don't ride it until you know that information and you have a clean title for it. Hopefully, it works out soon.
