Crafting the Page: Behind the Scenes of Publication Design and Publishing
On October 28, we hosted a dynamic panel discussion featuring Ellen Lupton, Tony Venne, and Raquel Castedo, leading professionals in the field of publication design. Together, they shared their insights and experiences, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the creative and collaborative processes involved in publishing books and periodicals.
Ellen Lupton discussed her personal journey and offered practical tips on designing books. Tony Venne explored the collaborative relationship between designers and publishers, emphasizing key factors contributing to successful publications. Raquel Castedo focused on art and artist books, highlighting the significance of designer-artist partnerships.
Cara Ober, BmoreArt's publisher and editor-in-chief, moderated the conversation.
This event was part of AIGA Baltimore Design Month, hosted by Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), BmoreArt, and promoted in collaboration with SoDA.

Hofmann was attracted to grid system but encouraged playing with grids and break them a little to find artistic freedom and harmony. Hofmann liked using photography and high contrast. Grids are a foundation for freedom, guides not limitations. Collegue of Muller thought that even the geometric shadows were too subjective And that muller should make typography into an image. How many fields I need to communicate what I want? What needs to be the biggest? How can I break the rule of grids in this design? Breaking the grids by designers who grew tired . Experimental posters communicating energy not order.

Flexible grid - grid offers rational universal approach - it makes placing information quick, efficient Why Switzerland? - neutral territory from war - not destroyed infrastructure and recovering economy, heaven - bauhaus master sometimes migrated there - museum hosted exhibitions, there were competitions - the design market started being international - the design was easy to understand and translated well in every country - only Swiss could spend that amount of money on design Communication first

Thank you so much to Greg, for sharing infos and, above all, his passion for the history of graphic design, which I had the opportunity to discover from a 2016 lecture held by him in NY, available on Vimeo. His effort to speak clearly and slowly pays well, mostly for those who are not strictly American-speaking. I think there are still so many aspects to be rediscovered: in my personal experience of research on Franco Grignani, every detail I found opened new unexpected frontiers... The big aim for all of us passes through the sharing of our findings via the open digitization of historical resources. We really need more initiatives like this one.
