@wet timguavass there are quite literally historical artifacts with visual representation of human sacrificing related to this game. its not secret that ancient mesoamericans used sacrifice very often dude.
What they mean is that there was little to no sacrifice of the actual ball players outside of a ritual sacrifice form of the game where the usual captives were sacrificed in the place of the actual players. The depictions of sacrifice pertain to this or are symbolic reference to the Popol Vuh where one of the hero twins is decapitated but doesn't die. Human sacrifice in general, yes, perhaps even of losing players in certain circumstances. But it was not a requisite of the game by any means.@@SMKDred

there are many different types of mesoamerican ball game... across many different cities there are different rules. Remember that some ball courts even have a hoop for the ball to go through!
Not what the period sources re the Aztec form of the game say. They are very specific that it was the hip only. Likewise all the Aztec and Maya depictions. The later/other forms of the game not played on the stone courts, sure, other rules were used ("forearm ulama" notably). @@92GreyBlue
